Kolkata: While only a few buses on route 223 are presently being tracked on the "Where Is My Bus App", an entire fleet of 106 buses plying on three routes – 45, 45A, and 45B – can be tracked on the app beginning next week.
Over 84 buses out of 106 have installed new smartphones for this purpose. Training was completed on Saturday at Garia. The transport department has set July 22 as the cut-off date for complete data of bus workers on four other routes – K1, 219, 79B, and L238. These buses will be integrated into the platform the same day. A Durga Puja deadline is being pursued to bring all routes under this app.
Once tracked through the VLTD system, both transport department officers and cops will also know if the buses are speeding using the app that all 45 route bus drivers will install in their smartphones.
At the meeting with Kolkata Traffic Police on Saturday, bus owners also raised their concerns about cop excesses. Top officials told them that action would be taken on sergeants if evidence with specific complaints reaches them.
DC (Traffic) Shrikant Jagannathrao Yeilwad discussed passenger feedback with bus transporters about complaints of conductors charging "excessively" and forcing passengers to get off "at a spot of their choice". Cops warned that strict action will follow if these basic traffic rules are flouted.
"All bus drivers are required to scan their vehicle's designated QR code and install the official tracking application prior to commencing their trips," said Titu Saha of City Suburban Bus Service.

Ahead of Durga Puja, puja committees in West Bengal are expecting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to increase the financial grant for them, with a crucial meeting of festival organisers with the chief minister scheduled for July 31 at Kolkata's Netaji Indoor Stadium to finalise the plans. The meeting holds immense significance for thousands of big and small Durga Puja committees in Kolkata and other districts. Last year, the Government raised its grant from Rs 75,000 to Rs 85,000 per puja committee. Many feel the chief minister will increase the grant further to Rs 1 lakh in an announcement at the July 31 meeting. The chief minister will preside over the meeting, which is expected to see representatives from approximately 5,000 puja committees, high-ranking police officers, Kolkata's mayor, and officials from the fire department, the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation, and other agencies. Puja committee officials are eagerly awaiting the day, as the chief minister traditionally announces not only financial aid but also various exemptions for the festival. Checks of the government grant are typically disbursed to committees via local police stations. Political analysts are keenly observing this year's meeting, given its timing ahead of the Assembly elections next year. The Trinamool Congress has seen positive electoral outcomes linked to the puja grants. With the Lok Sabha elections having concluded last year, during which the grant was increased, the potential increase in the grant to 1 lakh just before the Assembly elections is seen by political circles as a strategic move that could positively influence the ballot. Furthermore, the chief minister is said to be leveraging this platform to promote communal harmony. Beyond the financial aspects, the meeting will also provide essential guidelines for various festival preparations, including maintaining cleanliness and ensuring drinking water supply during the puja days. CM Mamata embarks on district tours, starting with Birbhum Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee started a district tour on Sunday, starting with Birbhum. Trinamool Congress sources said the chief minister would arrive in Birbhum on Sunday afternoon. Her itinerary includes an overnight stay at Rangabitan. On July 28, she will hold an administrative meeting at Gitanjali Theatre to review the district's development projects. Fresh drive to free Kolkata footpaths of vagrants
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to launch a fresh drive to free Kolkata's roads, passenger waiting areas, and footpaths of vagrants. A source at the KMC said on Sunday that the drive will be held in three phases in August. A letter in this regard has been sent to the Kolkata Police for its cooperation. It has been learnt that the drive will be held on August 3, August 13, and August 23, and preparations for that have already begun. "In this campaign, vagrants and footpath dwellers will be identified and sent to night shelters for rehabilitation purposes. Arrangements in this regard are being made," said the KMC source. The move is aimed at maintaining the beautification of the city. The civic body is trying to speed up the work, given the Durga Puja festival, which will be in the last week of September this year. "The presence of vagrants in various passenger waiting areas of the city has become a source of inconvenience for the public. This time, a drive will be conducted all over the city to clean such places," said a senior KMC official. It has been noticed that beggars and vagrants have made a living by setting up tents and arranging their belongings under bus shelters, footpaths, or bridges in important places such as Ultadanga, Moulali, Mallik Bazar, and other places. "In an attempt to address all such issues, a three-phase drive has been planned throughout August," said the official. Earlier, such a drive was held in four places in the city, from Mallik Bazar to Ballygunge Outpost, from Gariahat to Hazra crossing, Gopalnagar, Park Circus, and Beck Bagan. Although the drive achieved some success, it failed to remove vagrants from the city's sidewalks.

Tripura Government asks NHDCL to complete NH repair work before Durga puja
'The Tripura Government has asked the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to complete the repair work of the Assam-Agartala National Highway (NH-8) before Durga puja,' a senior official said on Sunday (July 27, 2025.) The Durga puja, the biggest festival in the northeastern State, will commence on September 29, 2025. Following reports of the bad condition of the National Highway from Kumarghat to Churaibari in Unakoti and North districts, PWD secretary Kiran Gitte, along with senior officials of NHIDCL and State PWD, visited the National Highway to take stock of the situation on Saturday (July 26, 2025.) Two suspected Bangladeshi smugglers shot dead at International Border in Tripura Earlier, Chief Minister Manik Saha also held a meeting with officials to review the bad condition or roads, including the National Highway and asked for repair works on a war footing. "On Saturday [July 26, 2025], I travelled over 400 km through the National Highway from Khowai to Kamalpur and Churaribari via Manu and Kumarghat. Senior officials from NHIDCL and State PWD also accompanied me. The road from Kumarghat to Churaibari needs immediate repair as several patches of it suffered severe damage due to the ongoing monsoon," Mr. Gitte told PTI. According to him, the NHIDCL has been asked to complete the repair work from Kumarghat to Churaibari before Durga puja. "I have asked NHIDCL to complete repair work by Durga puja. I have also told them to bring high officials (from outside the State) to see the ground reality," he said. West Tripura MP and former CM Biplab Kumar Deb met the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, in Delhi on July 23 and urged him to send high-level officials to the northeastern State to check the condition of roads. "Plans are there to construct sustainable RCC roads in the coming days that can withstand the heavy rainfall in Tripura. Urged the Union Minister to send a team consisting of high-level officials for quality checking and identifying the defects and take necessary strict actions," Mr. Deb posted on Facebook after meeting with Mr. Gadkari.
