Schiaparelli Fall 2025 Couture: Back to the Future
It started — as most Schiaparelli couture shows do — with a viral moment. Cardi B, dressed in a black bustier dress with a dramatic raised neckline dripping curtains of fringe, stood in front of the gilded gates of the Petit Palais holding a live black raven. 'I'm not scared of the bird,' she told WWD. 'I control him. We're best friends.'

Still, the image was strikingly on-point. Was the Gothic bird a harbinger of doom, or simply a reflection of ambient angst?
As it happened, Roseberry's fall collection harked back to another chaotic moment in time: the inter-war period when founder Elsa Schiaparelli revolutionized the language of fashion with her Surrealist designs, often created in collaboration with artist friends like Jean Cocteau and Salvador Dalí.
Roseberry pulled black-and-white photographs from the archives and transcribed them into an edgy collection where color was stripped away in favor of metallic surface effects. 'There's something about that era that felt mournful and also turbocharged at the same time,' he said backstage after the show, which he titled 'Back to the Future.'
Silver sequins glistened on a black jacket with ramrod-straight shoulders and slim leg-of-mutton sleeves, and exploded across a transparent black tulle reproduction of the 'Apollo of Versailles' cape designed in 1938 for U.S. actress and interior designer Elsie de Wolfe — one of the highlights of the brand's museum retrospective in Paris in 2022.
While hourglass constructions stuck to the designer's body-conscious playbook, for every bulging hip pad there was a slinky bias-cut gown sliced away to reveal acres of flesh — none more so than a black satin fishtail gown scooped low in the back to reveal a rhinestone-encrusted thong, evoking Tom Ford's famous Gucci G-string.
Roseberry leaned into fetish glamour with a black saddle dominatrix bustier, and molded breasts with erect nipples. They appeared on a pearl gray satin body plate with black harness trim and protruded from the back of a red satin corset-laced gown, accessorized with a mechanically pulsating rhinestone necklace shaped like a human heart.
With her sleek bun, glossy black lips and silver spike heels, Anasofia Negrutsa, dressed in a silver biker jacket with matador epaulets, appeared like a cross between sci-fi classics 'Blade Runner' and 'Metropolis.' Roseberry said the collection was inspired by a world, and an industry, on the precipice — both then and now.
'I wanted it to feel like a bit of a farewell. We're gonna be restructuring everything after this,' he said. 'I think if you want to change the result, you have to change the process, and I just want to keep pushing forward.'
Having dominated the post-pandemic couture scene with his sculptural creations and mastery of red carpet moments, Roseberry is wise to position himself for next season's great reset, when Jonathan Anderson at Dior, Matthieu Blazy at Chanel and Pierpaolo Piccioli at Balenciaga will all make their couture debuts. Call it surreal fashion for surreal times.

Demna Narrates His Balenciaga Retrospective — All at Once
The new 'Balenciaga by Demna' exhibition in Paris features some of the Georgian designer's own clothes, his voice — and the irreverence and design innovation that defined his decade at the Paris house. It opens with a retrospective of his fashion show invitations — a microcosm of his wry commentaries on luxury, and boundary-stretching antics — and a rejection letter dated 2007, when he was a student at Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts and had applied for a menswear internship at Balenciaga. Demna's voiceover — which competes with 49 others, creating a cacophony of voices in a vast showroom space at Kering headquarters — expresses relief, for his professional journey might have turned out differently had he received a yes. After graduating with a master's degree in fashion design in 2006, Demna went on to work for Walter van Beirendonck, Maison Margiela and Louis Vuitton before cofounding Vetements in 2014, and assuming the helm of Balenciaga the following year. He is to wrap up his tenure on July 9 with a swan-song Balenciaga couture show before officially taking the design helm of Gucci — which he foreshadows by including an ensemble from his 2021 Hacking Project, which hinged on 'conceptual interpretations of Gucci's recognizable signatures as Balenciaga products.' There is humor in the content — an open laptop broadcasts the 10-minute episode of 'The Simpsons | Balenciaga' screened at his raucous 'Red Carpet' show — and the methods of display, some garments shown on hangars plucked straight from the archive racks, single shoes rotating like an A&W sign of yore. An eerily lifelike mannequin of artist Eliza Douglas, one of Demna's fetish models, recurs twice, modeling the opening look from his debut show for spring 2016, and a semi-fitted gown in scuba satin from spring 2025. A red 'swing' puffer worn off the shoulder like an evening gown, also from his debut collection, shows how Demna reinterpreted silhouettes from founder Cristóbal Balenciaga. His penchant for trompe-l'œil recurs in several looks, while 'ready-made' designs include a clutch purse shaped like a stolen side-view mirror, and a bangle cast in resin to resemble a roll of packing tape. In his narration, Demna explains that he once repurposed a real potato chip bag to hold his phone and other essentials while attending an event. Paparazzi photos aroused curiosity in the Lay's and Doritos of the world — and Balenciaga's merchandising team. To wit: A long-running accessories franchise was born, the pouches crafted in leather with a metallic interior. The designer includes a few of his most controversial designs, including a blue leather duffel that resembles an Ikea Frakta carryall, and his $925 towel skirt, an example of how 'spontaneous gestures' can spark design ideas. 'I love that it makes you question whether this is a joke or not,' Demna says in his narration. 'It's great to question things. Bye bye!' The tongue-in-cheek, thumb-in-the-eye attitude extends through to the exhibition catalogue, printed to resemble a mid-market glossy with too many cover lines, and a fake ad for a Balenciaga watch, bearing a caseback instead of the time. In total, there are 101 exhibits spanning 30 collections and loads of experimentation in volumes, silhouettes and attitude, including his 'fake layering coat' from winter 2018 and perhaps too many 'pantashoes.' 'After this, I promise it's the last one in this exhibition,' he implores toward the end of the cross-shaped display. The exhibition is open to the public from Thursday through July 9 via online registration. Kim Kardashian referenced her longtime collaboration with Demna through her outfit while visiting Balenciaga's Paris headquarters on Tuesday. Ahead of the fashion house's fall 2025 couture presentation, which will take place on Wednesday, Kardashian sported a monochromatic look in hot pink — a formula that Kardashian and Balenciaga have used together many times before. CELEBRITY CRUSH: At Demna's farewell show for Balenciaga, you couldn't move without stepping on someone's train. Among the celebrities who gathered at the house's haute couture salon on Avenue George V in Paris were Lauren Sánchez Bezos, fresh off her wedding to Jeff Bezos in Venice; Nicole Kidman; Lorde; Naomi Watts and her daughter Kai Schreiber; Cardi B; Michelle Yeoh; Salma Hayek Pinault; Patrick Schwarzenegger, and K-pop star Juyeon. 'The wedding was incredible,' she gushed. 'The dresses were amazing, but being with everyone that I loved, I'm actually teary-eyed thinking about it — it was the most magical three days of my life.' She caught up with fellow guests including her Blue Origin crewmate Katy Perry, who was unable to make it to the nuptials because of tour commitments. Sánchez Bezos said her fondest memory of Demna's decade-long tenure was wearing a glossy black gown he designed to the Living Legends of Aviation Awards last year. 'It was really my first couture dress ever, so it wasn't even just about where I was going, but that I got to wear my first couture dress in my whole life, and it's a memory I'll never forget,' she said. 'He's an artist.' Perry, who memorably showed up naked under a fur coat this time last year, opted for a sculptural black blazer dress with a portrait neckline. What she liked best about Demna's designs was being able to feel luxurious, even in his more casual ready-to-wear looks. 'All of the materials, though they look distressed and dystopian, were always of the highest quality, so you had that feeling inside of you of luxury, while still maintaining your own sense of style and cool,' she said. She praised the Georgian designer, who's preparing to join fellow Kering-owned brand Gucci, for staying true to himself. 'He follows his compass, and that's hard to do when you're part of a big, big company. It's a fight,' the 'Roar' singer said. Guests did not shy from donning some of the designer's more out-there creations. Lisa Rinna, sporting a bowl wig, was wrapped in an electric blue parka gown. Lorde came in a see-through silver chainmail dress, though she was careful to add nipple pasties. Performance artist Alexis Stone channeled Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams — complete with the hand known as Thing on his shoulder. Meanwhile, Cardi B vamped it up for fans on the sidewalk in her sheer black négligé dress, which she flipped up to show off the rose tattoo on her backside. Inside the venue, French singer Aya Nakamura said the high point for her was releasing a capsule collection with Balenciaga in 2022. 'C'est le must,' she declared, noting the line promptly sold out. Watts appeared in two campaigns last year for the Rodeo and Bel Air handbags, alongside Isabelle Huppert and Kim Kardashian, who were part of this season's stellar runway cast. The 'Mullholland Drive' star paid tribute to Demna's inventiveness. 'He's his own person, and so modern, so edgy — never too far, though. It just feels like there's always something wearable, even in these dramatic shows,' Watts said. 'I mean, I'm small, I can't wear some of those clothes, but there's ways to do it, and he's literally reinventing the wheel every time.' Back in 2023, Vittoria Ceretti shot a campaign at the couture salon while it was still under construction — a typically counterintuitive move. 'Demna is such an incredible creative that always managed to bring up new things and new ideas and always surprises and shocks us,' the Italian model said. 'He does his own thing, and I think that's the best possible way to do it as a creative. But sometimes fear gets in the way, and it feels like he's fearless and he doesn't care,' she said. 'He will just do his own thing and it always turns out to be amazing.' For Juyeon, a member of boy band The Boyz, Demna saved the best for last. 'I've been watching his career, and I think this show is the most special moment,' he declared.
