Islam Makhachev clarifies UFC retirement speculation: 'We're just beginning'
One of his longtime coaches, Javier Mendez of American Kickboxing Academy, stated this past month that he believes Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) only has three fights remaining in his career, including his expected next bout against UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena.

Shortly thereafter, one of Makhachev's managers, Ali Abdelaziz of Dominance MMA, said that was incorrect, and he instead believed the former longtime UFC lightweight champion still has at least three good years of competition left.
Makhachev said everyone is welcome to share their takes, but right now retirement couldn't be further from his mind. He is focused on conquering a new challenge at 170-pounds and achieving his "dream" of a second belt in a second UFC weight class after vacating lightweight gold.
"Javier has his opinion, Ali has his opinion – I have my opinion," Makhachev told MMA Junkie. "We're just beginning. This is a new book. We're just beginning."
After some gruelling cuts down to 155 pounds, Makhachev will get some physical relief competing at welterweight and could potentially add more fights to his career. It also comes down to how often he can compete, too.

Makhachev had initially hoped for three fights in 2025. Given the change in weight class it's going to be two, and he would prefer UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 25, or ideally November's UFC 322 event in New York City.
"We will see when I'm going to fight," Makhachev said. "Madison Square Garden or Las Vegas or Abu Dhabi, because still we don't have the day. If not Madison Square Garden, I want to fight in Abu Dhabi. I don't want to wait."

In back-to-back fights, former featherweight champion Max Holloway put together two of the most incredible knockouts in UFC history. From there, Holloway went eight fights without recording a stoppage, going 4-4 in that stretch, including a bid for the interim lightweight title. Holloway found his finishing touch again against "The Korean Zombie." It was an intense firefight that earned Fight of the Night honors. Jung came forward repeatedly, leading to hard-hitting exchanges. Holloway connected with a right hook 23 seconds into the third round, ending the fight with a walkoff knockout. Holloway returns to action in the main event of UFC 318 against Dustin Poirier for the BMF title. The fight takes place on July 19 at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. ‘Money' Challenges Chandler To A Loser-Retires Fight
Photo byfor Fanatics Just over a week has passed since former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight title challenger Renato Moicano suffered a unanimous decision loss to Beneil Dariush at UFC 317, but he's already targeting his next opponent: fellow 155-pound title challenger Michael Chandler. Advertisement 'Man, I'll be completely honest with you, the oldest guy in the division, brother. 'Michael Chandler,' Moicano said when asked who he wants to fight next. 'I think that fight makes a lot of sense, and there isn't a better time. I've been talking shit for about Michael Chander for so long and if I lose to him, I'll have to kill myself.' Suicide is clearly an extreme statement, so Moicano's co-host proposed an alternative: a loser-retires fight (sound familiar?). 'Money' loved the idea. '100%,' Moicano said. 'Sign the contract.' From a rankings perspective, a Moicano-Chandler bout aligns well, with Moicano at No. 12 and Chandler at No. 13, despite some fighters calling for Chandler's removal from the rankings. The matchup also carries extra intrigue, as the two train at rival Florida gyms: American Top Team and Kill Cliff FC. PFL staff member Jeff Brady dies a hero after sacrificing own life to save two children

A longtime member of the MMA community and a staff member of Bellator, PFL, and Cage Warriors, Brady is being hailed a hero after he died Saturday rescuing two children from a current in the Colorado River near Yuma, Ariz. Seven hours after his disappearance, Brady's body was retrieved from the water, according to AZ Central. "My brother went out on his shield, fighting the currents while lifting his (girlfriend) Elen's two nephews up out of the water," Jeff's twin brother Greg Brady wrote Sunday on Instagram. "The younger brother (10) got swept off the sandbar. The older brother (12) dropped his fishing pole and went after him as any big brother would do! Jeff jumped off our boat and ran and dove in after them both. I was 30-40 seconds behind which felt like an eternity. I dove in and caught up to them. Jeff had been fighting the current and the panicked boys and was completely underwater holding the boys up when I swam up. I hooked his arm and pulled the boys away from him and looked um in the eyes and yelled, 'Don't you f*cking drown. Fight and swim.' "It all happened so fast. I turned and started throwing the boys off of me and told them to keep swimming. A pontoon boat appeared what seemed out of nowhere. Now Julie and I are in deep water with the boys. We get them on the boat and I turned around and Jeff was gone. Jeff gave his life for these two boys. He is an absolute hero. This happened at 11:45 am. No alcohol was involved. Just 100 percent bravery and heart." Tributes from around the combat sports world poured in once news of Brady's surfaced on social media, including 100s of fighters who voiced their heartbrokenness about the situation. A GoFundMe was launched Monday and shared by UFC legend Dan Henderson. The funds raised will go toward helping Greg Brady with expenses for Jeff's funeral and family. Brady was 51. He worked as the director of operations for Henderson's Clinch Gear and joined Bellator as a marketing and merchandising consultant in 2017. He then joined PFL in March 2024 following the brand's acquisition of Bellator. Brady also worked as the director of operations for Cage Warriors' U.S.-based events.
