Will Smith considers changing his name after discovering surprise connection

Daily Mail6 hours ago
Will Smith has teased a dramatic name change after learning he has multiple connections to Welsh culture.
The actor, 56, joined host Lucy Owens on BBC Radio Wales to discuss a series of links to the country in Great Britain.
Owens explained to the star that where he grew up in Wynnefield, Philadelphia, is actually named after Welsh physician Dr. Thomas Wynne.
She also revealed that his mother's hometown of Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia, was named by 17th-century Welsh Quakers, per Entertainment Weekly.
'So I'm Welsh?' Smith asked excitedly, 'I'm Welsh, basically.'
Owens joked in response: 'Yes, Will! You are Welsh and we are claiming you.'
The actor quickly decided he was a fan of his new heritage and pondered a name change.
'That might be my new name,' Smith laughed. 'Welsh Smith. I'm gonna be Welsh Smith.'
Owens then shared that Bryn Mawr, where Smith's mother still lives, translates to 'big hill' in Welsh.
This, once again, excited the guest: 'Big Will lives in Big Hill. This is crazy.'
The host then joked that the Men in Black actor could turn the newfound information into a rap and Smith gave it an impromptu try, rapping, 'Big hill, big Will — big still!'
Will is currently touring his newest album, titled Based on a True Story, which is his first full-length album of his own since 2005's Lost and Found.
The singer has a performance set for Cardiff Castle on August 25, only days after Welsh performer Sir Tom Jones.
Will and Tom shared the screen on the '90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
'It was magnificent. When somebody with that kind of iconic status just walks into the room — he walked onto the set and you just get that [gasp], that thing when the audience recognizes what's happening,' Will recalled.
'It was one of the classic moments on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.'
The singer teased a tribute to Sir Tom in his Cardiff show: 'There's a part in my show where we celebrate his connection to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.'
In another recent interview, Will opened up about the infamous moment he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.
He reflected on the incident - where he struck Chris, 60, on stage over a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, which was due to her alopecia diagnosis.
Now, nearly three years later, Will has described the incident as 'bruitiful' – a blend of brutal and beautiful – as he spoke about authenticity, personal growth, and how the fallout reshaped his perspective.
Appearing on Radio 1Xtra with host Remi Burgz on Tuesday, he said: 'Finding that way to be with my own humanity - be able to not be perfect but be human and find a higher power in my humanity that I found in my constellation of ideas of perfection that we called Will Smith.
'The fullness of who I am to allow that to be better than Will Smith.
'The honesty and authenticity and the broader spectrum of the possibilities of who I am is better than Will Smith.
'Working in that space of authenticity and honesty and perfection.
'Allowing that to grow into a higher perfection than the imagery of Will Smith is where I am as an artist and human right now.'

A GRANDAD is so obsessed with manhole covers he has travelled the world to see them and written two books. Peter Sishton's love for street coverings began in 2017 when he hurt his back in southern France and could only look down while out walking. 3 3 He said: "I visited friends but on day two my back went and I ended up laid up for the majority of the time. 'When I went out for a walk in the evening, doubled over in pain, I looked down and noticed that the manhole covers were a work of art in themselves. 'I took abstract photographs of them and even managed to sell them, so I kept going.' Peter, 63, from Barry, Glamorgan, runs Facebook group Manhole Covers Around the World, with 65,000 members. He visited Spain, France and Sri Lanka to search out designs. The artist's books include Heavy Metal and Manc Holes and Beyond, which he wrote with the Manchester Manhole Collective. Left dangling by a thread were Tommy and Lucy, Conor and Emma, and Lauren and Harrison. Shakira chose to save Conor after he revealed he had feelings for her - and said she felt the same. She told Ty: "Harrison's my best mate obviously, with Conor we've been exploring a connection. "At the end of the day I'm not going to be in this position and not save the people I've got the best connections with." When the result was revealed, Helena snapped: "It's not right." But Shakira stood her ground, coolly responding: 'I did what I wanted to do,' before joking, 'I'm going back to public enemy number one.' Meanwhile, Toni wasn't hiding her feelings after witnessing Lauren and Harrison kiss right in front of her. 'That's why I wanted them gone,' she fumed. Love Island rocked by leaked voice note that 'exposes' Casa girl's game plan Harrison had tried to kiss Toni on the terrace days ago, but slept with Lauren in bed last night. It comes after The Sun revealed a leaked voice note appearing to show Lucy's game plan to win Love Island by coupling up with Tommy. The 37-second recording, which Love Island fans claimed was the voice of Lucy Quinn, laid bare a plot to couple with popular Tommy as a surefire way to make the final. Tommy was previously coupled up with Irish beauty Megan Forte Clarke who was axed after her love triangle with Conor. Her betrayal led her to be voted one of the three least popular girls by the public. He was then in a couple with Welsh beauty Emily, but last week, Lucy walked into the main villa holding hands with smitten Tommy, who dumped Emily to be with her. In the most dramatic moment of the recoupling, Emily was left shell-shocked having stayed loyal to Tommy and given a heartfelt speech in which she said she couldn't wait to see him. 8 Shakira and Ty were voted the most compatible and were given the power to send one couple home Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 8 Emily was dumped from the villa after Tommy recoupled with Lucy in Casa Amor Credit: Eroteme 8 Tommy returned from Casa Amor with Lucy Credit: Eroteme

Stevie Wonder clears up bizarre rumour that he's not really blind

Stevie Wonder has addressed the bizarre rumors floating around about his blindness, describing his sight issues as a 'blessing'. The 75-year-old opened up about his health while performing in Cardiff last week, during his Love, Light and Song tour – ahead of his electrifying stint at London's BST Hyde Park on Saturday. Appearing on stage in the Welsh capital, the Isn't She Lovely singer took a moment to speak out against claims that he can actually see. 'I must say to all of you, something that I was thinking, 'When did I want to let the world know this?' But I wanted to say it right now,' he began in footage making the sounds on social media. 'You know there have been rumors about me seeing and all that,' he continued, to laughter from the crowd. 'But seriously, you know the truth. 'The truth is, shortly after my birth, I became blind. Now, that was a blessing because it has allowed me to see the world in the vision of truth, of sight. See people in the spirit of them, not how they look. 'Not what color they are, but what color is their spirit?' Stevie was born premature and went blind shortly after – he was diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) at six weeks old, due to too much oxygen in his incubator. According to the Mayo Clinic, this occurs when blood vessels 'swell and grow too much in the light-sensing tissue at the back of the eye'. The overgrown vessels can sometimes slowly scar the retina and pull it out of place, causing retinal detachment, which can 'harm vision and cause blindness'. He found his passion for music at an early age and began releasing albums in the 60s, and went on to become one of the best-selling artists in history – thanks to hits including Superstition, Part-Time Lover, I Just Called To Say I Love You and Signed, Sealed, Delivered among many others. Last year, he made a rare comment about his childhood while recording the Wonder of Stevie audiobook series with Wesley Morris and President Barack Obama. 'I was born. Shortly after that, I'm blind,' he said at the time. 'My mother went through the different things, and so my experience with that was deep.' He recalled hearing his mom cry 'every night', until he told her: 'Mama, you shouldn't cry, you're making my head hurt. 'And I said, 'Maybe God has something for me that's bigger than all this'. 'History proved that true.' Stevie has faced scrutiny over his sight many times over the years, with his fellow celebrities making light of the speculation. Appearing on the Kelly Clarkson Show in 2019, Lionel Richie joked: 'I'm going to tell you something – I've been spending my whole life with him thinking, 'He can see, I know he can see.' 'I went to his house. He says, 'Wanna hear a new song? I've got it in the car. Come on, go with me.'' He shared that his pal sat in the driver's seat, 'cranked the car up, put the tape in … and starts driving back down the driveway'. 'I screamed, 'Stevie! What are you doing?' And he said, 'Ah, got you, didn't I?'' More Trending In 2016, Anthony Anderson also unpacked his friendship with Stevie during an appearance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Questioned on whether he once challenged Stevie to a charity basketball game, the Blackish actor quipped: 'I did… What y'all don't know is, Stevie can see. It's just an act. 'I'm telling you, have him on the show! Put stuff in his way, I bet you he'll step over it.' Got a story?
