Self-harm cases rise at Hull Prison, report finds
A review in April measured progress at the jail since inspections in 2021 and 2024.
HM Inspectorate of Prisons had previously found that prison bosses were not using data effectively to reduce violence or self-harm, but the latest report concluded that "reasonable progress" had been made to understand the causes of the problem, despite the rise in incidents.
The Ministry of Justice said it was addressing the concerns raised in the report.
Previous inspections had identified a number of concerns, including inmates being locked up for more than 22 hours a day and a lack of involvement in meaningful activities or attending education workshops.
The inspectorate had also cited an increase in positive drug tests and "too many" prisoners being released with no homes to go to.
The recent follow-up visit found that "concerns had been taken seriously" and staff were working hard to improve the situation.
However, Chief Inspector of Prisons Charlie Taylor said the availability of drugs remained a "significant concern" and a threat to safety and security.
He said leaders were now using a drug strategy that focused on recovery and good support.
He also said the prison remained overcrowded, with cramped cells, and while there had been work to improve inmates not ending up homeless on their release from prison, the number of those released without homes to go to had not yet fallen.
In conclusion, Mr Taylor said: "Leaders were committed to driving improvement at Hull and this independent review of progress indicated that their hard work was paying off in many important areas."
HMP Hull houses about 900 remanded or newly-convicted men and vulnerable prisoners.
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: "While we have seen notable improvements since the last inspection, we fully acknowledge the challenges that remain at HMP Hull."
The spokesperson added that efforts were being made to address the concerns that had been raised, including training staff to reduce the risk of self-harm and bringing in reforms to reduce pressure on prisons.

Award for breast surgery tattoo artist's work
The founder of a charity which offers breast cancer patients nipple tattoos after reconstructive surgery has been given a national award. Lucy Thompson, who runs the Nipple Innovation Project (NiP) in Cullingworth, Bradford, has received a British Citizen Award (BCA). The awards, dubbed the People's Honours, are for people who make an outstanding contribution to society. Ms Thompson, who was among 27 people receive the accolade at the Palace of Westminster on 24 July, said: "It's the ultimate affirmation." The 35-year-old has been a tattoo artist for more than 12 years and set up the charity in 2018. "I run it on a volunteer basis," she said. "We work very, very hard in and amongst our daily work and life commitments, to reach more people. "To have recognition, and an award, for all the hard work that we've done collectively over the past nearly eight years is just the ultimate reassurance that we're on the right track." About 300 patients are treated for breast cancer in Bradford each year, with the majority retaining their nipples. The areola, the area of skin around the nipple, can be tattooed to improve its appearance after surgery. Last year the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust announced a partnership with Ms Thompson's charity. The mother-of-one now helps train other medical tattoo artists around the country through her charity. Slidell woman accused of buying Lamborghini while on government assistance
SLIDELL, La. (WGNO) — A Slidell woman was arrested on Monday after she allegedly paid for multiple luxuries, including a Lamborghini and plastic surgery, while fraudulently remaining on government assistance. According to Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, 35-year-old Candace Taylor, of Rousset Ridge in Slidell, was being investigated by the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation after a complaint came from the Louisiana Department of Health accusing Taylor of committing Medicaid recipient fraud. Woman found dead in house named as pub worker, 21
A woman who was found dead at a house in West Yorkshire at the weekend has been named as 21-year-old Courtney Angus. Police were called to reports of an armed robbery at Asda in Dewsbury at about 21:20 BST, and a man arrested at the scene told them there was a woman dead at a house nearby. Officers found Miss Angus at the property on Norfolk Street, Batley, a short time later. A 37-year-old man who was arrested at the supermarket is being questioned on suspicion of murder, police said. A knife was seized at the scene, the force added. Miss Angus was named in a tribute from her former workplace, The Fox and Hounds pub in Batley. The tribute read: "We are heartbroken to hear the devastating news about Courtney. "Though she was only with us at The Fox for a short while, she left a lasting impression – sweet, kind, and always with a warm smile. "Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved her. It's a truly sad time for Batley and Dewsbury, and our thoughts are with all affected. "Forever 21. Rest in peace, Courtney." A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances of what has happened, but officers would like to reassure the local community that there is not believed to be any wider risk to the public at this time."
