Melbourne AFLW skipper Kate Hore backs league's future, citing rising skills and talent
The AFL has reportedly told clubs the women's competition is losing $50 million a year as it approaches its 10th season, which starts next month.
League officials have made improving on-field performances the top priority for the AFLW, which is also facing declining crowds and television audiences.
AFLW players are pushing for an expanded season, in which every team plays each of its opponents once, by 2031.
But a review by league officials has reportedly showed that would come at a $200 million loss.
Hore, a seven-year AFLW veteran, urged league officials and sponsors to have faith in the competition, which she believes is growing its on-field product each year.
"I'm super confident that the AFLW is an amazing competition already and we're only 10 seasons in, so I think we just need to keep investing, both as players and then more broadly as well, into the game," Hore said.
"I compare myself as a player in my first season in 2018 and if I was that same player now I certainly wouldn't be getting a game.
"The standard and the investment from players is only growing, and the competition's only going to keep growing as the investment comes."

Hore, a three-time All-Australian and premiership player in 2022, said the continuing influx of young players who have developed through talent pathways will lift the AFLW's standard.
"The skill levels are going to continue to grow and I've really seen that in our new girls and our draftees this year," she said.
"They've been playing the game since they were five years old.
"I compare it to myself, I played from five until 10 (years of age) and then didn't play for 10 years.
"It's a pretty long time where I didn't get to develop my skills.
"These girls are coming through the pathways now … it makes me really, really excited for the future."
Hore on Wednesday helped Melbourne launch a new sponsorship with a Swedish automotive manufacturer, who will partner with the Demons' women's team this season.
"This partnership just shows that there's so many businesses and organisations that really want to help grow the game and support us girls," Hore said.
"It's an investment really and the competition's growing. We're celebrating our 10th season but only nine years in, so the competition is going to continue to grow.
"Sponsorships like this show that there's real investment from organisations and businesses out there, which we really love."

‘I let down myself': Nathan Cleary accepts that State of Origin criticism is warranted after failing to guide the Blues to victory in the decider
Nathan Cleary concedes criticism of his State of Origin performances is justified and that he's yet to properly own a series for the Blues after NSW handed back the shield with a meek showing in front of their home fans on Wednesday night. The Penrith halfback is the best player in the world and is on track to have one of the greatest individual careers of all time, with Cleary already winning four titles in a row where he was judged the most valuable player on two occasions. But while his club form has been unrivalled, Cleary's Origin record is now 8-9 after he lost his third decider. The Cleary discourse has always ranged from him being the GOAT to others pushing back because he hasn't dominated rep footy, and the man himself concedes the criticism is warranted. 'At the end of the day, I haven't (owned Origin),' he said in the sheds. 'I'm the harshest marker of myself anyway so I don't really think what other people say is out of line because I think that of myself anyway. 'At the end of the day, you feel like you've let down the boys that you play with in the state, and that's what hurts the most. I let down myself and my own high standards. It's frustrating.' The champion playmaker spent 20 minutes with his parents in the sheds discussing what went wrong on a night where the Maroons ambushed the Blues again to race out to a 20-0 half-time lead. Cleary looked dejected and addressed his emotions in a raw interview where he praised Queensland's defence for throwing him off his game as they've done in previous deciders. 'I feel terrible. It's so frustrating,' he lamented after he didn't set up any tries in the 24-12 loss. 'It feels like I've been here before and then it's happened again. It sucks. 'I'll definitely reflect, and that's sort of already happening in my brain at the moment as I try to work out what happened. 'It's so frustrating because I probably didn't adjust quickly enough to their rushing defence, and that played into their hands. 'They were scrambling and saving tries, and we probably conceded them too easily. 'I don't want to say too much right now (about what I could have done) because I'm not 100 per cent sure, but I think I could have controlled it a little more and not played into that aggressive defence as much, which gave them confidence.' This game was supposed to be Cleary's final frontier, but he'll have to wait another year to tick it off his bucket list. 'That's sort of sinking in now,' he said. 'It's much like a grand final. It's the biggest game of all, and if you lose, you have to wait another year to get back there. 'It's about growing from it and not kicking stones. The frustrating thing about rugby league is that you feel like you learnt lessons before, but there are always new lessons to learn. 'No two rugby league games are ever the same so it's constantly evolving and you've got to evolve your game.' Rival halfback Tom Dearden was the best player on the field in the decider and deservedly won the Wally Lewis Medal, with the Cowboys star full of praise for Cleary afterwards. 'He's a great player and you don't take anything away from his game tonight,' he said. 'We played really well and got our game on, and that's what allowed us to control the game and win in the end. 'Cleary is a special player and you've got to make sure you're at your best to beat a team with a guy like Nathan playing for them.'

Melbourne Cup prizemoney to be paid from first to 24th after $10m race confirmed
Racing Victoria has confirmed prizemoney increases for Australia's most famous and best races. Melbourne Cup prizemoney has officially increased to $10m with all starters to share in the bounty. The Cox Plate has also been boosted to $6m – up from $5m – to mark the historic last weight-for-age championship on the traditional Moonee Valley Racecourse before a major redevelopment. Racing Victoria is set to confirm prizemoney schedule for the 2025-25 season on Thursday. This masthead on Monday revealed the Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate prizemoney decisions. VRC chief executive Kylie Rogers has welcomed the Melbourne Cup prizemoney increase. 'We are thrilled to finally be able to allocate the prizemoney the Lexus Melbourne Cup deserves,' Rogers said. 'It's the 'People's Cup' and frankly $10m allocated across all participants from one to 24 keeps the dream alive for all local, domestic and international participants.' Prizemoney historically for the Cup has been paid down to 12th place from $4.4m to $160,000. While the status quo remains for the top half of the Cup field, from the first Tuesday in November this year 13th to 24th will each receive $100,000. Last year the Melbourne Cup carried $8m prizemoney and a $750,000 18-carat gold three-handled trophy. Rogers praised VRC chief racing officer Leigh Jordon for the new payment structure. 'It takes a lot to get to the Cup,' Jordon said. 'Spreading it right down to the bottom gives everyone a chance in the race domestically and I think internationally it will help a little bit too … it takes a bit to fly out here and participate in the Cup. 'It's good for our grassroots participants here in Australia and New Zealand … it's the People's Cup and we want everyone to be able to run in it.' The VRC has also officially recognised the Geelong Cup and Moonee Valley Gold Cup as 'win and you're in' Melbourne Cup qualifiers. 'Geelong Cup and Moonee Valley Gold Cup have historically delivered, naturally, Melbourne Cup starters and so we thought we would richly reward them and formalise them as part of our golden ticket program,' Rogers said. 'Now we have a $10m Melbourne Cup with 10 golden tickets leading in.' An industry-wide collaborated and approved 'strategic reallocation' has allowed RV to maintain the overall prizemoney pool while also being able to boost select races from grassroots to elite level. A reduction in All-Star Mile and Australian Cup prizemoney – now $2m from $2.5m last year – has boosted the Newmarket Handicap ($1.5m to $2m) and Melbourne Cup.

Racing Victoria finds $316m to deliver prizemoney changes for 2025-26 season
Victorian racing is united behind a $316m distribution of prizemoney and bonuses set to support participants from grassroots to elite levels in the upcoming 2025-26 season. Racing Victoria has managed to retain prizemoney levels year-on-year despite ongoing financial and wagering pressure. RV worked closely with partners, including Country Racing Victoria, metropolitan racing clubs and stakeholder groups for trainers, jockeys, owners and breeders, to achieve its objective through strategic reallocation of funds and internal cost saving. RV chief executive Aaron Morrison has appreciated the industry-wide support and collaboration. 'We understand the importance of prizemoney through the ecosystem,' Morrison said. 'Grassroots is just as important as the top end.' Key prizemoney changes include: • 1400 country maidens, a third of all Victorian races, increased by $5000 across the board from Non-TAB ($20,000 up from $15,000) to premium ($55,000 up from $50,000); • $55,000 (day/twilight) and $60,000 (night) maidens will be programmed on midweek metropolitan cards; • Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and Group 1 Underwood Stakes increased from $750,000 to $1m; • Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes now $1m (up from $200,000) ; • Minimum prizemoney for all Listed and Group 3 races during the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup carnivals to increase from $175,000 to $200,000 (Listed) and $200,000 to $240,000 (Group 3). • Resilient hoop has milestones in sight after rejections 'The prizemoney model for 2025-26 reflects a broad range of valuable submissions from our clubs and stakeholder groups whom we thank for their insights,' Morrison said. 'We also acknowledge the commitments from the MRC, VRC and MVRC to increase their contributions to lift prizemoney for key races next season. 'Prizemoney is the lifeblood for participants and owners and provides confidence to continue to invest in Victorian racing. 'At the heart of next season's prizemoney model is a strategic realignment to primarily turbo charge country maidens and to invest in flagship races that deliver maximum returns to the industry.' RV has brought forward its planned scaling back of participant wellbeing and WorkCover levies – built into prizemoney – to August 1 (from February 2026) and freed up $1.4m as a result. The overall welfare contribution (3.5 per cent) from August 1 will support equine (2 per cent), jockey (1 per cent) and participant wellbeing/WorkCover (0.5 per cent) initiatives.
