PM Shri schools in Varanasi to upgrade education infrastructure
According to officials, teachers in PM SHRI schools are holding regular meetings with principals of nearby government schools to share best pedagogy practices aligned with NEP 2020 for improved attendance and enrolments of students.
Shashi Prabha Rai, principal of a PM SHRI school from Nawapur said, 'The enrolment of students in my school has increased from 200 in 2024-25 to 300 in 2025-26 . We have 16 teachers and have all the facilities like that of a private school. The betterment in facilities due to better funding from the government has helped us change the mindset of parents towards government schools.'
Launched on September 5, 2022, the PM SHRI scheme is aimed to select 14,500 existing schools from across the country for upgradation and is expected to benefit 1.8 million students. Under the scheme, 13,076 schools have been selected in 33 states and Union Territories (UTs). Among the 1,888 PM SHRI schools in Uttar Pradesh, Prayagraj has the highest 61 schools selected under the centrally-sponsored scheme. In Varanasi, there are 23 PM SHRI schools, including two Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and one Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV).
Nawapur resident Rekha Gond, who has enrolled his grandson in the PM SHRI school, said, 'This school has all the facilities including drinking water, clean toilets, playground and smart classroom. Seeing my grandson's learning improvement, children from my nearby houses have also enrolled their kids.'
Santosh Kumar Dubey, principal of PM SHRI Composite School, Besahupur said the attendance of students in his school has improved to 90% from 70% after becoming part of the central scheme in 2023. 'Students love the learning environment and come to school regularly,' he said.
Sanjay Kumar Yadav, block education officer (BEO) of Sevapuri said that there 155 UP-government run schools in his block and two of them – Composite School Besahupur and Primary School Thatara (first) are designated as PM SHRI schools and getting a funding of ₹1.10 lakh as grants compared to ₹60,000 before becoming part of the scheme.
'On the models of PM SHRI schools, we have provided smart TVs in all our government schools with the help of NGOs and panchayat officials. Like PM SHRI schools, teachers in other schools are also teaching students in a joyful learning environment to improve learning levels and attendance percentage. We regularly hold meetings of principals of government schools with PM SHRI schools wherein we share best pedagogy practices,' he said.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday inaugurated a two-day Vice Chancellors' Conference in Kevadia, Gujarat, bringing together over 50 heads of central universities to evaluate the progress and strategise the next phase of implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) conference, jointly organised by the Ministry of Education and the Central University of Gujarat, marks five years since the rollout of NEP 2020 and serves as a platform to align institutions with the national vision of Viksit Bharat by the inaugural session, Shri Pradhan underscored the transformation in India's higher education landscape over the last decade. He highlighted the rise in total enrolments to 4.46 crore—a 30% growth since 2014–15—along with significant progress in inclusivity, particularly the 38% rise in female enrolment and the increase in GER among SC and ST communities. Notably, the GER for women has now surpassed that of men, and the number of PhD scholars, especially women, has seen a steep climb. The Minister laid out the Panch Sankalp—five guiding principles of NEP 2020—as the roadmap for university leadership: Next-gen emerging education, Multidisciplinary education, Innovative education, Holistic learning, and Bharatiya Knowledge Systems. These, he said, must be integrated into campus practices to foster a culturally rooted yet globally relevant education a 'students-first' approach, Shri Pradhan called on Vice Chancellors to shape institutions that prioritise student growth, skilling, and innovation. "Students are the core strength of our nation. We must prepare them to be not only job seekers but job creators, social entrepreneurs, and ethical innovators," he minister reiterated the government's goal of increasing the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 50% by 2035. He stressed the need for universities to reform curricula, enhance digital infrastructure, invest in faculty training, and encourage multidisciplinary integration to meet this target. To this end, he urged every university to prepare a strategic roadmap for implementing NEP 2020 in full PAPER AND INSTITUTIONAL ROADMAPSEach university has been asked to prepare a strategy paper outlining steps for achieving NEP goals, including subject integration, promotion of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS), and skilling through tech-based education. Universities are also encouraged to host similar internal conferences to drive awareness and alignment on of the Central University of Gujarat, Dr. Hasmukh Adhia, elaborated on the "Six Principles" of Karmayoga and emphasised the value of traditional Indian knowledge systems in shaping individuals and society. He urged institutional heads to apply these values to everyday functioning and Vineet Joshi, Secretary of Higher Education, called the conference a timely opportunity to reflect on achievements and refine future strategies. Odisha govt to introduce annual exams for Class V, VIII; scrap no detention rule
BHUBANESWAR : Students of Class V and VIII will now have to appear annual exams for promotion to the next grade at the end of the academic year. The School and Mass Education department on Wednesday informed that the state government has decided to implement significant changes to the Odisha Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2010 through the Odisha Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Rules, 2025. Under this amendment, students of Class V and VIII will have to appear for annual examination and if they fail to secure marks to meet the promotion criteria, they will be provided two months of extra teaching by their teachers. The students will have to reappear for the examination and if they do not pass, they will not be promoted. The new rule applies to both government and private schools and will be implemented from the 2025-26 academic session, commissioner-cum-secretary of the department Shalini Pandit said. The amendment, however, makes it clear that no child shall be expelled from school until the completion of elementary education. With foundational learning being given top priority, the move aims at ensuring that the learning levels are reached before students are promoted. The amendment aligns with the National Education Policy-2020 which emphasises the need for continuous assessment and formative evaluation of students to improve learning outcomes. These amendments are in line with Section 38 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, and will come into effect upon their publication in the Odisha Gazette, the department informed. Detaining students in a class based on their annual examination performance was stopped in the state after the Right to Education (RTE) Act was passed in 2009. Section 16 of the RTE Act stipulated that 'no child admitted in a school shall be held back in any class or expelled from school till the completion of elementary education (Classes 1 to 8)'. However, in December last year, the Ministry of Education did away with the 'no detention' policy for students of classes V and VII, allowing schools to fail students who are unable to clear class promotion examinations. States like Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Delhi have already implemented the change. He asserted that during the SP's tenure, development existed only on paper. "There is a rule of law in UP today. Where people once feared stepping out after dusk, daughters now walk with their parents even at midnight. Children are receiving sweaters, school bags, and nutritious meals, with funds transferred directly into their accounts," Singh said.
