Roberto Firmino said it was "a privilege and an honor" to have played alongside Diogo Jota following the late Liverpool forward's tragic death.
Jota died in a car crash in the early hours of Thursday morning as he made his way to Santander, ahead of catching a ferry to England. Jota was due to report for the first day of Liverpool's pre-season training on Monday (July 7). A tire blowout on the Lamborghini that Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were traveling in, caused a crash that ultimately claimed both of their lives.

The soccer world united in grief, as tributes to the Portugal international flooded in, and former Reds striker Roberto Firmino was among those to remember the 28-year-old.

"When words fail, there are only inexpressible groans," Firmino said. "And for that reason I get on my knees, praying that the Holy Spirit comforts the heart of Rute, Dinis, Duarte, Mafalda, Seu Joaquim, Lady Isabel and all the family and friends. It was a privilege and an honor to have known and lived such special moments alongside you. Rest in Peace to my brother Jota, and Andre."

Jota and Firmino were teammates at Liverpool for three seasons between 2020 and 2023, winning the FA Cup and the League Cup during their time in the squad together.
Jota was only driving back to England because he had been advised against flying after recently undergoing surgery, according to reports in Portugal.
CNN Portugal's sports editor Rui Loura said live on air: 'The surgery he (Jota) had had was lung surgery and he had been advised against flying following this.
"He was on his way to the northern Spanish port city of Santander to cross the ferry and reach the UK that way and carry on with the car once he reached Britain. He was on his way to Liverpool with his brother.'

The accident occurred in the province of Zamora, in western Spain, which is situated between Portugal and Santander, where Jota was traveling to board a boat to Portsmouth, from where he would have made the five-hour drive north back to Merseyside.
Jota's new wife, Rute Cardoso, identified the brothers for the authorities. She revealed to the police that the pair's plan was to stop over in Benavente before continuing their journey to Santander.

Cardoso, mother to Jota's three children, has been provided with psychological support, and the personal items salvaged from the Lamborghini blaze have been handed over to her.

It was a relative who raised the alarm when the brothers failed to arrive in Benavente, and subsequent checks on the documentation of the deceased confirmed they were Portuguese nationals.
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expressed his sadness on social media. "This is a moment where I struggle!" he wrote. "There must be a bigger purpose! But I can't see it! I'm heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother Andre.
"Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much! All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them! Rest in peace - Love, J."

3 players reportedly on Barcelona's radar after Nico Williams' transfer collapse

Barcelona fans were gutted when the highly anticipated transfer of Athletic Bilbao's star winger Nico Williams fell apart. The 22-year-old Spaniard, a top target for the Blaugrana, shocked everyone by signing a new deal with Athletic Club until 2035. With the transfer window buzzing, Barcelona has quickly turned its attention to other talents to bolster their squad. Here are three exciting players reportedly on their radar to fill the gap left by the Nico Williams saga. 1. Luis Díaz – Liverpool First up is Liverpool's Luis Díaz, a 28-year-old Colombian who's been lighting up the Premier League with his lightning-fast pace and jaw-dropping dribbling. Whether he's cutting in from the left or leaving defenders in the dust, Díaz's flair makes him a perfect match for Hansi Flick's high-octane, pressing style at Barcelona. Word is, Deco, Barcelona's sporting director, has been a huge fan of Díaz for ages. But snagging him won't be easy—Liverpool sees him as a cornerstone of their squad, and his price tag could soar past €70 million. For a club like Barcelona, still wrestling with financial tightropes, that's no small feat. Still, Díaz's ability to turn games on their head has fans dreaming of him in the iconic Blaugrana kit. 2. Marcus Rashford – Manchester United Next on the list is Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, a 27-year-old forward whose speed and versatility could shake things up at the Camp Nou. Rashford's had his share of ups and downs at United, but there's no denying his talent—when he's on, he's unstoppable. A move to Barcelona could be just the spark he needs to rediscover his magic. Deco's been keeping tabs on Rashford for a while, and recent chatter suggests Barcelona might explore a deal, possibly starting with a loan to navigate La Liga's pesky 1:1 financial rules. Imagine Rashford linking up with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Pedri—talk about a mouthwatering prospect! 3. Denzel Dumfries – Inter Milan In a bit of a curveball, Barcelona's also got their eyes on Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries. The 28-year-old Dutchman isn't your typical winger, but his relentless runs down the right and attacking instincts could add a whole new dimension to Flick's system. Think of him as a turbo-charged full-back who can stretch defenses and chip in with goals or assists. Dumfries' contract with Inter runs until 2026, but with talks stalling, Barcelona might swoop in for a bargain compared to Williams' eye-watering €95-100 million release clause. His physicality and experience, both in Serie A and with the Netherlands, make him a unique option to complement Barcelona's young stars. Dozens pay tribute to Liverpool star Diogo Jota in Portugal

People wait outside the funeral chapel for the public wake of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in Gondomar (MIGUEL RIOPA) Dozens of Portuguese from the president to a childhood friend grieved for Diogo Jota in his hometown on Friday after the Liverpool star and his brother's death in a car crash. Jota, 28, and Andre Silva, 25, were killed on Thursday after their vehicle veered off a motorway in northwestern Spain and became engulfed in flames, just after the Portugal forward had got married. Advertisement A wake for the siblings was organised at a chapel in the Porto suburb of Gondomar on Friday before the funeral scheduled for 10:00 am (0900 GMT) on Saturday. Close family and friends including the parents paid their respects first, with the grandfather propped up by two others to help him enter. Mourners arrived carrying wreaths of flowers, some sobbing audibly, before the wake was opened to members of the public. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, Jota's agent Jorge Mendes and Porto club president Andre Villas-Boas were among the notable attendees paying condolences. Advertisement "Football is truly in mourning. Diogo was an icon of the talent Portuguese football represents," said football federation chief Pedro Proenca. At the Diogo Jota football academy, close to Gondomar SC where the ex-Porto and Atletico Madrid player took his first steps in the game, well-wishers created a memorial with flowers, scarves, candles and shirts. "Thank you, Diogo Jota," read a child's handwritten message, while mourners stood in silent contemplation. Francisco Goncalves, a 66-year-old judicial officer, was still coming to terms with what he called a "senseless disaster... no one understands what happened". Advertisement - 'Left us too young' - Pedro Neves, who was friends with Jota at school in Gondomar, said he "will remember him as someone who was very friendly, very courteous, who loved everyone, who always had a smile on his face". "He left us too young, it's not fair. But that's how life is sometimes," Neves, 31, told AFP. At Porto's Estadio do Dragao, flags flew at half-mast and a photograph of Jota smiling and wearing the club's shirt was projected on a big screen. Liverpool have opened a book of condolences and lowered flags to half-mast, with dozens of supporters laying a sea of flowers, balloons and Jota shirts outside Anfield. Advertisement A similar shrine was set up at the Molineux ground of his former Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers. UK media reported Liverpool had postponed the start of pre-season training, while the reigning English champions confirmed ticket sales for a July 13 friendly had been suspended. In London, Wimbledon relaxed its strict white-only dress code to allow Portuguese tennis player Francisco Cabral to wear a black ribbon in tribute to Jota. bur-tsc/imm/mw

Liverpool prepare for emotional farewell at Diogo Jota funeral

Liverpool are preparing to bid an emotional farewell to Diogo Jota at the forward's funeral in Portugal on Saturday. The club, as well as fans and football as a whole, are in mourning after the 28-year-old Portugal international and his brother Andre Silva were killed in a car crash in Spain in the early hours of Thursday. Advertisement Mohamed Salah, one of the last players to share his grief on social media, admitted he was dreading returning to the club in the wake of Jota's shock death. Some players were due back on Friday to begin the preliminaries of pre-season testing but the first tranche of a phased return was postponed as everyone at the club continues to try to come to terms with the tragedy. 'I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break,' Salah wrote on social media. 'Team-mates come and go but not like this. It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go back. Advertisement 'My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. 'Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.' It is believed a flight to Portugal has been chartered by the club. Reports in Portugal say the players, most of whom are still on summer holiday, are expected to attend but Liverpool have yet to confirm arrangements. Mourners gathered at a wake in Portugal on Friday morning, ahead of the brothers' funeral at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in Sao Cosme at 10am on Saturday. Initially held in private for family – Jota leaves a newly-married wife Rute and three young children – it was later opened up to the public with hundreds queuing around the 17th-century church. Advertisement Nottingham Forest's Jota Silva, born in Gondomar, and Jota's former Wolves and Portugal team-mate Joao Moutinho were among those to attend the chapel, with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation Pedro Proenca and Porto president Andre Villas-Boas also visiting. The country's president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and prime minister Luis Montenegro both attended in person, while members of the Portuguese parliament paid tribute to the two brothers. Former Portugal international Joao Moutinho paid his respects at the wake of Diogo Jota at Sao Cosme Chapel in Gondomar, near Porto (PA) At Anfield, where a temporary shrine has built up, thousands have left flowers, shirts, scarves and cards. A tearful former Liverpool captain and team-mate Jordan Henderson was among those present on Friday, laying flowers and taking a moment to read some of the tributes after signing a book of condolence available in the Anfield Road stand. Advertisement 'Jots it was a pleasure to share a pitch with you but more importantly a friendship. All the laughs we had off the pitch and trying to find ways to wind milly (James Milner) up and get him fined, which we never could,' the England midfielder wrote on Instagram. 'Taking pictures of me asleep on the bus travelling then sending them to me later. You always wanted to have a laugh and were a pleasure to be around. Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson lays a tribute (Peter Byrne/PA) 'I know how much Rute and your family meant to you and I know you will always be looking down on them. Thank you for everything you brought into this world, we will all miss you.' An Everton delegation comprising Portugal-born strikers Beto and Youssef Chermiti and former midfielder Ian Snodin also attended Anfield to pay their respects and lay wreaths.
