Diaspora body slams Punjab govt for acquiring farmland around Ludhiana

The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), representing the Punjabi diaspora across the US, Canada, and the UK, has strongly criticised the Punjab government's decision to acquire 25,000 acres of agricultural land surrounding Ludhiana.
In a statement released on Saturday (May 24), NAPA executive director Satnam Singh Chahal demanded that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab Cabinet withdraw the proposal without delay.
"The move to acquire nearly all farmland within a kilometre radius of Ludhiana — one of Punjab's most fertile regions — poses a catastrophic threat to the livelihood of farmers," said Chahal.
According to him, the land acquisition will impact over 150 villages and approximately 50,000 farming families in Ludhiana district. He said these families have depended on these lands for generations.
'Alarming disconnect between AAP and rural Punjab'
Chahal further alleged that Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema played a role in influencing the decision. He claimed that the market value of agricultural land in the region is between ₹5 crore and ₹10 crore per acre, and once taken, farmers would be left without viable means to sustain themselves.
"This decision reflects an alarming disconnect between the AAP leadership and the rural backbone of Punjab," Chahal said.
NAPA estimates that the overall economic fallout from the land acquisition could cross ₹2 trillion, calling it one of the largest forced land transfers in recent memory in Punjab.
"Punjab is already grappling with the consequences of unchecked urbanisation. This large-scale land grab will only deepen the ecological crisis," Chahal added.
Diaspora plans global opposition
The association has pledged to mobilise the global Punjabi community through peaceful protests, legal steps, and international awareness campaigns. NAPA has also sought an urgent meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to voice its concerns.
Meanwhile, local resistance to the land acquisition proposal is also gaining strength. On Wednesday (May 21), the Punjab chapter of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) held a gathering in Bhanohar village, attended by farmers from nearly 30 villages.
Political leaders including Dakha MLA and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) rebel Manpreet Singh Ayali, and Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira also joined the meeting. SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal has begun visiting the affected villages and has announced a protest outside the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) office on May 29.
Farmer organisations such as Bhartiya Kisan Union Dakaunda have declared their opposition to the acquisition, warning that it threatens their land rights and livelihoods.
NAPA's broader advocacy
This is not the first time NAPA has taken up issues affecting Punjab. In February this year, the organisation urged the state government to create a rehabilitation fund for young people deported from the United States. This followed the arrival of a US military aircraft at Amritsar airport carrying undocumented immigrants from Punjab and neighbouring states.
Earlier, NAPA also appealed to the Centre to officially grant 'martyr' status to freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev.
Notably, NAPA describes itself as a global organisation -- with chapters in USA,Canada and United Kingdom -- working to serve and empower the Indian diaspora across continents.

Remove Ads Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has gotten support from BJP national spokesperson RP Singh and former DSGMC chief Manjit Singh G amid backlash for his film ' Sardaar Ji 3 ' starring Pakistan actor Hania a post on his X account on Friday R P Singh described Dosanjh as "a national asset and a global ambassador of Indian culture" and slammed the Federation of Western India Cine Employees for demanding action against the celebrity."FWICE's call to revoke his Indian citizenship over an inadvertent and pre-incident film shoot is not only unfair but shockingly disproportionate. The film featuring a Pakistani actress was shot before the Pahalgam attack. If there is anguish, it can be expressed through a boycott or by urging that the film not be screened in India. But attacking Diljit's patriotism and demanding such an extreme step is simply irrational," he wrote."Did FWICE or others object then? TV news channels routinely invite Pakistani guests to boost TRPs. Should those anchors now relinquish their citizenship too? Let's not cheapen nationalism or weaponise patriotism. FWICE should reconsider its stance—such targeting of our own talent only weakens our moral standing," he Punjabi actor and BJP culture cell convener Hobby Dhaliwal extended support to Diljit at a press conference at the party's Chandigarh said that Diljit was not just an artist but a globally respected face of Punjabi culture . AAP suspends Punjab MLA Kunwar Vijay for 5 years after he opposes arrest of SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia

Days after the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Amritsar North in Punjab, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, opposed the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case, the party's political affairs committee suspended him from the party for five years. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau on June 25 arrested Majithia after conducting a raid at his residence in Amritsar in a disproportionate assets case worth Rs 540 crore Kunwar Vijay shared a video of the raid showing Majithia's wife Ganieve Kaur protesting against the alleged high-handedness of VB sleuths. Kunwar Vijay, who is a former IPS officer, said, 'When Majithia ji was in jail, the Bhagwant Mann government neither conducted any interrogation nor sought his remand and eventually allowed him bail.' 'However, it is a question of a family's dignity now, it is the dignity of every family, whether one is a politician, actor, rich or poor, friend or foe. Conducting a raid at someone's house early in the morning is against ethics. Almost every government has misused the police and vigilance agencies for its own benefit, but the outcome has never been significant,' Kunwar Vijay said on social media. While pronouncing disciplinary action against Kunwar Vijay, the AAP has stated, 'Questioning the vigilance action against Vikram Majithia proved costly for Kunwar Vijay Pratap. It is the Mann government's clear message through this big decision that politics will not be tolerated in the campaign against drugs. Action against drugs is the party's ideology and whoever tries to create obstacles in it has no place in the party. The Aam Aadmi Party has suspended Kunwar Vijay Pratap from the party for five years. This is a decision of the Aam Aadmi Party's PAC (political affairs committee). He has been suspended for being involved in anti-party activities.' Kunwar Vijay had said he may have had political disagreements or ideological differences with Majithia, but when it came to principles, religion, and integrity, one should speak out. 'When Majithia sahib was in jail in a case registered during the Congress government, the Mann government did not seek any remand or conduct any questioning. Later, the state apparatus under Mann sahib even facilitated his bail.' He had also stated that the Punjab and Haryana High Court granted him bail on the grounds that if the police don't require someone for interrogation, keeping them in custody is against the law. 'I am trying to make a point here that when he was in custody, the government enabled his bail. Now, suddenly, notices are being issued to him, raids are being conducted at his house, and the privacy of his wife is being violated. I reiterate that I have an ideological disagreement with Majithia sahib. That will remain. This, however, is a matter of ethics and integrity,' he said.
