Two tenant farmers ‘end life' due to mounting debt in Andhra Pradesh

The Hindu18-06-2025
The death of two tenant farmers by suicide in two villages on Tuesday in Nadendla mandal of Palnadu district reportedly due to mounting debts over the last three to four years created a panic-like situation among the local residents.
The deceased were identified as Nasam Adinarayana, 45, from Nadendla village and Siriboyina Goapala Rao, 42, of Thubadu village. 'They allegedly committed suicide early on Tuesday,' tahasildar A.V. Ramana told The Hindu.
Ms. Ramana further said that District Collector P. Arun Babu and Agriculture Director S. Dilli Rao visited the houses of the two farmers and consoled their families. She added that the three-member committee, including the tahasildar, Agriculture Officer and Circle Inspector, was constituted to conduct an inquiry into the suicide.
She said, as per preliminary reports, Adinarayana accumulated a debt of about ₹70 lakh. He cultivated commercial crops like cotton and chilli. Goapala Rao had debts of about ₹40 lakh, and he grew cotton, chilli and tobacco.
TDP MLA Prathipati Pulla Rao expressed shock over the suicide of farmers, and assured that the government wold extend support to their families.
'The government is committed to helping the two families, and once the inquiry is completed, financial aid will be released,' the Collector said.
YSRCP leader Vidadala Rajini expressed concern over the suicide deaths, and said they were due to lack of Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for crops and rising debt burden. After consoling the bereaved families at the Chilakaluripet Government Hospital, she addressed the media and blamed the ruling coalition government for the deaths.
Ms. Rajini said the two farmers couldn't get fair price for their produce. She criticised the government for its failure to provide MSP for any crop, despite repeated protests by farmers. She demanded ex gratia for the victims' families.

Chandrababu inaugurates development projects in Kuppam, announces free solar power

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has announced that solar power will be provided free of charge to farmers for their pump sets. Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony and inauguration of various development projects worth ₹1,292.74 crore in Kuppam constituency, Naidu pledged that efforts would be made to install solar power in every household, alleviating electricity charges permanently. During the 'Prajavedika Sabha' held in Tummishi, Naidu expressed his vision for the transformation of Kuppam, citing the establishment of a Rayalaseema Horticulture Hub constituency as a key initiative. "Development and welfare should go hand in hand," he stated. "We must create wealth while also implementing welfare programmes. The people of Kuppam have graciously elected me as an MLA nine times. The current YSRCP government has wreaked havoc in the state, dismantling established systems." Naidu highlighted achievements under his administration, including the completion of pothole-free roads and a planned ₹3,829 crore investment to provide water access to every farmland. He also announced plans to elevate Kuppam to a prominent milk production hub, with initiatives like a ₹98,000 subsidy for backward classes to support the generation of three kilowatts of solar energy under the PM Suryagarh scheme. Further developments highlighted included the impending construction of an airport in the Kuppam area and the creation of new roads parallel to Kuppam-Hosur, aimed at attracting large-scale industries to the constituency.

Maharashtra Oppn alleges ‘betrayal of our annadata', walks out of Assembly over soybean dues and farmer suicides

The Maharashtra Assembly witnessed a walkout by Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi legislators on Wednesday over multiple agrarian issues, including alleged irregularities in soyabean procurement, delayed payments to farmers, rising suicides, and farm loan waivers. The House witnessed a heated exchange of words after Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar said that thousands of soyabean farmers across the state had not been paid for their produce under the minimum support price (MSP) scheme. 'Farmers have been defrauded. Payments have not been made despite assurances. This is a betrayal of our annadata,' Wadettiwar said during a debate that quickly escalated. Responding to the charges, Cooperation and Marketing Minister Jaykumar Rawal said soyabean procurement had taken place at a record scale across 562 centres this year. Over 51,000 farmers sold their produce and Rs 5,500 crore was directly transferred to their bank accounts, he said. However, controversy erupted over an incident in Akola district's Balapur taluka. Rawal said a farmer collective, Andura Agro Company, failed to deliver 1,297 quintals of soyabean to the designated warehouse despite registering it under procurement records. A criminal case has been registered against the company head and Rs 36 lakh withheld pending investigation. 'Efforts are underway to ensure that affected farmers are not denied their dues,' the minister added. The original question was raised by MLA Daulat Daroda during the Question Hour and followed by supplementary questions from MLAs Hemant Ogle, Randhir Savarkar, Nana Patole, Rohit Pawar, Kailas Patil, and Jayant Patil. Dissatisfied with Rawal's response, Opposition members staged a walkout, accusing the government of inaction and lack of accountability. The Opposition also flagged the issue of rising farmer suicides in the state. Citing official figures, Wadettiwar said 767 farmers suicides were reported between January and March. Of these, 200 were declared ineligible for assistance, while 194 cases remain under review. Wadettiwar also questioned the state's spending priorities, pointing to Rs 20,000 crore sanctioned for the Shaktipeeth highway project while loan waivers remain unfulfilled. 'The government is hiding behind committees instead of taking decisions. There is money for highways, but not for farmers,' he said. A suspension motion on the issue was rejected by the Speaker, triggering the Opposition's walkout for the second time in a row. Reacting to the walkout, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar accused the Opposition of politicising farmers' concerns. He said the government was open to discussion on all agrarian issues. 'We have always stood by farmers. The government believes in action, not disruption. We are ready for any structured debate,' he added. Speaker Rahul Narwekar also said the House was sensitive towards the issue of farmers and that time would be allowed on Thursday for the discussion on the issues related to farmers. Earlier in the day, MVA legislators protested at the Maharashtra legislature complex accusing the BJP-led government of favouring a private firm, Megha Engineering, in a major tunnel project in Thane, and alleged that it involved a Rs 3,000-crore scam. Opposition seeks Rs 10 lakh compensation for lightning deaths During the Question Hour, Vijay Wadettiwar also demanded that compensation for lightning-related deaths be increased from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. 'When victims of tiger attacks receive Rs 25 lakh, why are lightning deaths capped at Rs 4 lakh?' he asked. Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan said lightning-related fatalities had now been included in the state's disaster response framework, and assured that the proposal to increase compensation would be discussed with the chief minister. In 2022 and 2023, 236 and 181 deaths due to lightning were reported from Maharashtra. Wadettiwar said the current compensation failed to reflect the scale of human loss suffered by farmer families during extreme weather events.

Party loyalist with RSS background, PVN Madhav is Andhra's new BJP chief, like his father 40 yrs ago

The BJP, in alliance with the TDP and the Jana Sena Party (JSP), is a partner in the Chandrababu Naidu-led state government. Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has picked P.V.N. Madhav, a party loyalist with roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), as the next Andhra Pradesh unit chief to expand its footprint in the southern state where it has been struggling to gain ground on its own. After a unanimous election, Madhav took charge in a ceremony at Vijayawada on Tuesday. Like Telangana, though several popular leaders were in the fray for the top post, the BJP high command opted for a staunch party loyalist in Andhra Pradesh. Like Ramchander Rao, the new Telangana BJP chief, Madhav also served as an MLC and a BJP leader in the legislative council. Both were elected from the Graduates' constituencies in 2015 and 2017, respectively, in their respective states. Both were associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the students' wing of the RSS, cutting their teeth in politics in their student days. While Rao is a Brahmin, Madhav is from an OBC community. Madhav's family has been associated with the Sangh for two generations. His father, P.V. Chalapathi Rao, was the president of the BJP in united Andhra Pradesh in the early 1980s. Madhav, 51, holds an MBA from Andhra University. Inheriting his father's legacy, Madhav served in various posts in the BJP. While Purandeswari, former chief minister Kiran Reddy and MLA Sujana Chowdary, among others, contended for the Andhra Pradesh BJP president post, sources said the high command honoured the Madhav family's active association and contributions to the RSS and BJP growth in the state by elevating him. 'I was born during the Emergency, and now, when that chapter completes 50 years, I have become the AP BJP chief. I am happy to assume the post in a year when the RSS is completing 100 years,' Madhav told party workers at his induction event in Vijayawada. Madhav said that under his predecessor, Purandeswari, the party achieved eight MLAs and three MP seats and it now aimed to double the numbers with the support of senior leaders. Later, after visiting the famous Kanaka Durga temple at Indrakeeladri hill on Krishna banks, Madhav said that 'he will resolve the minor differences within the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) in AP'. 'I will see that BJP gets more prominence in the alliance, by taking certain aspects to the notice of CM Naidu,' the new chief said, adding that the BJP will strive to bring more funds from the Centre to the state. In March 2023, a year before the TDP-BJP patch-up, Madhav lost the North Andhra graduate MLC seat to TDP's Vepada Chiranjeevi Rao. On Tuesday, both TDP chief Naidu and JSP supremo Pawan Kalyan congratulated Madhav on his appointment as the BJP state president. 'Madhav, in active politics since his student years, is a leader with nationalist spirit. Now as AP BJP President, I hope he carries forward the NDA's spirit,' Kalyan said in a party release.
