‘Little Bear Ridge Road' will move from Steppenwolf to Broadway

Chicago Tribune07-07-2025
Producers Scott Rudin and Barry Diller said Monday that Samuel D. Hunter's 'Little Bear Ridge Road,' an emotional drama about an aunt and her estranged nephew set during the pandemic in rural Idaho, will open on Broadway for a limited 18-week run this fall. 'Little Bear Ridge Road' premiered last summer at Steppenwolf Theatre.
As in Chicago, the show in New York will star Laurie Metcalf and Micah Stock, reprising their performances from the production's world premiere at Steppenwolf. Direction is by Joe Mantello ('Wicked'). Preview performances will begin on Oct. 7 ahead of an Oct. 30 opening night at the Booth Theatre, 222 W. 45th St., New York.
This production will mark Rudin's return to Broadway, after being largely absent following 2021 media accounts alleging abusive treatment of some of his staffers. Rudin has since apologized and said any such behavior won't be repeated. Inevitably, he remains a controversial figure, but many who work on Broadway and follow its shows miss his formidable producing abilities and his voracious appetite for making new plays work in a commercial arena. He has paid much attention to new work coming from Steppenwolf over the years.
'It's a beautiful, singular play that deals with subject matter I had never seen a play take on, and it was being done by old and good friends and frequent collaborators of many years,' Rudin told the Tribune Monday. 'I love Sam's plays. It's a remarkably easy production to believe in.'
Sources close to Steppenwolf say there was much internal debate about the theater's involvement in this Broadway transfer. The Chicago institution has long and important relationships with both Metcalf, one of its best-known stars, and Mantello, an acclaimed director. Both have similarly close relationships with Rudin, who has produced several shows starring Metcalf.
Some in the ensemble believed that the play deserved its shot on Broadway with the theater's backing and Rudin producing; others wanted to try and make alternate arrangements for a commercial transfer. In the end, the company decided to release the play and the cast but to remove its name from the production.
That said, everyone still will know from whence it came.

Russell Wilson Got Major Dad Points After Cynthia Erivo FaceTimed Into His Daughter's ‘Wicked'-Themed Birthday Party

Russell Wilson's daughter didn't need to look to the western sky on her birthday to find Cynthia Erivo — she simply had to accept a FaceTime call from the Wicked star. While guesting on The Tonight Show on Tuesday (July 15), the football player had nothing but kind words for the singer-actress after revealing that Erivo had called into his 8-year-old little girl's Wicked-themed birthday party. Wilson shares Sienna with Ciara, along with 11-year-old stepson Future Wilburn, 5-year-old son Win and 1-year-old daughter Amora. More from Billboard Cynthia Erivo Opens Up About Her Queerness: 'The More Yourself You Are, The Better Understanding Starts to Happen' Shakira & The Weeknd to Headline 2025 Global Citizen Festival in Central Park The Who Kick Off Farewell Tour in Italy, Perform First Show Since Zak Starkey Sacking 'We have the coolest birthday parties,' Wilson told host Jimmy Fallon, sharing photos of himself dressed as Wicked's Fiyero and Sienna painted green like Elphaba. Noting that his oldest daughter is Wicked-obsessed, the New York Giants star went on to say that Erivo is 'the best.' 'She's awesome, because she had no problem hopping on the FaceTime,' Wilson continued. 'Ciara and her are really, really close. It was cool, 'cause Sienna was like, 'Um, can you sing to me now?' And she just hopped right into song. It was a good birthday, for sure.' The athlete also took a moment to gush about Sienna. 'I'm telling you guys, she's probably going to run for president one day,' the proud dad told Fallon's audience. 'She is a boss lady. She runs the show — Ciara runs the show, and [Sienna] gets it from her momma.' Sienna is just one of countless young fans who love Wicked, which premiered last November. As of late May, it had grossed $755.9 million worldwide, more than any other film adaptation of a Broadway musical. The movie's sequel, Wicked: For Good, will hit theaters in November. Of all the hype the Wicked duology has generated so far, Erivo recently told Billboard Pride Editor Stephen Daw in her June cover story, 'It's insane … and it's insane while it's happening, too.' 'She's able to access her rage more,' she continued at the time of how her character evolves in the second film. 'The scent I wore changed. The makeup changed. Little shifts that bring you to a more mature version of who Elphaba becomes. And she is delicious in this next one.' Watch Wilson's full Tonight Show interview above. Meet our favorite cosplayers at the 2025 Florida Supercon in Miami Beach

They came to the Miami Beach Convention Center wearing painted faces and homemade masks, complicated headpieces and gravity-defying shoes, lugging swords crafted not from steel but from foam, glue and sheer determination. They came as video game villains and big-screen superheroes, anime princesses and obscure creatures from other worlds. Professor Dumbledore from the 'Harry Potter' series was there. So were Nick Fury from the Marvel Universe and the ever-green Elphaba from 'Wicked' and pretty much every 'Star Wars' character from Greedo to the Emperor and R2D2, too. The annual Florida Supercon drew thousands of cosplayers to the three-day event for panels, games, photo ops, dance parties and autograph signings from stars like Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye from the Marvel Universe); John Boyega (from the 'Star Wars' franchise); and Billie Piper and Christopher Eccleston ('Doctor Who'). Look in one direction and you might spot Poison Ivy. Look the other way and Doctor Who appears, waving a sonic screwdriver. You could barely turn around without tripping over a character from 'One Piece.' And the ultracreepy Pyramid Head from the 'Silent Hill' horror video game inspired more than a few costumes — and probably a few nightmares as well. Here are some of our favorite costumes from Florida Supercon, which continues 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Sunday.
