IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: Rishabh Pant silences Harry Brook's ‘fastest 100' quip
India's Rishabh Pant celebrates after scoring fifty runs day four of the second cricket test match between England and India at Edgbaston in Birmingham, England, Saturday, July 5, 2025. (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) On Saturday, England found themselves on the receiving end of a relentless Indian batting display in the second innings at Edgbaston, which led Harry Brook to resort to mind games in an effort to disrupt Rishabh Pant 's rhythm during his quickfire half-century. Rishabh Pant was bringing the chaos at Edgbaston, and between deliveries, Brook tried to provoke Pant with a pointed question. 'What's your fastest hundred?' he asked, hoping to plant a seed of recklessness in Pant's mind. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Pant answered calmly, 'In Test cricket, maybe 80–90 minutes,' referencing the steady pace of his previous centuries. Not content to leave it there, Brook cheekily brought up his own record-breaking knock in the IPL. 'The fastest hundred I've hit was in 55 balls—you could do that today,' he teased, attempting to prod Pant into playing rash shots. Pant, however, remained unfazed and refused to take the bait. 'It's okay. I'm not too greedy for records. If it happens, it happens,' he replied with a composed smile, shutting down the sledging with quiet confidence. After scoring 25 in the first innings, Pant delivered an entertaining, counter-attacking and crucial 65 in 58 balls, with eight fours and three sixes. Now in 28 SENA Tests, Pant has scored 2,023 runs at an average of 41.28, with six centuries and six fifties in 52 innings and a best score of 159*. Marcus Trescothick: England Staying Positive, Embracing Challenge to Score Big In this series, Pant is the second-highest run-getter, with 342 runs in four innings at an average of 85.00 and a strike rate of 81.81, with two centuries and a fifty. His best score is 134. Pant made a stroke-filled 65 off 58 balls with eight fours and three sixes and put on 110 runs for the fourth wicket with Gill. Gill followed up his splendid 269 in the first innings with another massive knock of 161, which came off 162 balls with 13 fours and eight sixes. Jadeja made 69 not out (118 balls, five fours and one six) while adding another 175 runs in a brisk partnership for the fifth wicket with the Indian skipper. India, who resumed the fourth day's play at 64 for one, had lost KL Rahul (55) and Karun Nair (26) in the first session. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: Ex-England seamer explains why Akash Deep was more effective - 'He brings the stumps...'
India's Akash Deep celebrates after bowling out England's Joe Rootduring day four of the second cricket test match between England and India at Edgbaston in Birmingham, England. AP/PTI(AP07_05_2025_000546B) Former England pacer Stuart Broad has heaped praise on Indian seamer Akash Deep and explained why he was more effective in comparison to the England pacers on a placid Edgbaston track in the second Test. "He brings the stumps into play, nips the ball, even with the second new ball with Harry Brook (in the first innings), through the gate and off stump out of the ground," he told Sky Sports. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "He's a real threat and, you know, India have to use him wisely again on the final day. He's bowled wicket-taking balls tonight. Start with him tomorrow while the ball's hard and while the ball's still got a bit of newness to it, and then maybe if he needs a rest until the next new ball comes, that's fine," said Broad. Broad also pointed out how the use of the crease helped Akash Deep castle Joe Root in the second innings. "Using the crease. It's crucial. It's a skill and an art that every Test match bowler should have," said Broad. 'Siraj puts his heart on his sleeve': Morkel lauds pacers as India close in on win "Every bowler should have it really. I mean, how I used to sort of view it was a batter will always line up the same to you. "If you can change your release position by a couple of inches at a time, they're not necessarily turning their shoulders or their feet position. "You should practise that in the nets, and if you're going to play league cricket this weekend, just practise changing your angles just slightly at the back end of your run. "Just go a foot wider but still imagine you're running in at off stump and just work with that, because if there's no swing in the air, you suddenly get a different angle that you can work with."
