EUGENIE BOUCHARD said an emotional farewell to tennis as she retired following her exit from the National Bank Open.
The 2014 Wimbledon runner-up wiped away the tears after she was beaten in three sets in the second round by Switzerland's Belinda Bencic after two hours and 16 minutes.

Choosing to say her farewells in Montreal, the city of her birth, made natural sense and she gave the sold-out crowd a thrilling finale before going down 6-2 3-6 6-4 to the former Olympic champion.
Once the clash was over, a montage of the best bits of her career was played on the screen and American world No.4 Jessica Pegula – the 2024 US Open finalist – paid her tributes.
A framed commemorative collage of photos from Bouchard's career was presented on court and the caption said: 'Congratulations Genie on an outstanding career. You will be missed, WTA.'
She was also given a Tennis Canada trophy and fans spelt out MERCI GENIE with red placards.
Bouchard, playing as a wildcard, had won her opening match in the tournament against Colombian Emiliana Arango 6-4 2-6 6-2 on Tuesday but this was a test too far in the end.
The 31-year-old will now switch her allegiances to the sport of Pickleball which is growing momentum and popularity in the States.
Bouchard, who had strapping on her left thigh, did well to keep it together during her speech but there was one point she came close to losing control.
She said: 'I think it's so special to play my last match in Montreal, on this court, in front of you guys.
'I remember being a little kid, sitting in these stands, hoping and dreaming that I would play on this court one day.
"I grew up playing on these courts and nearby. So, it feels like a full-circle moment to finish my career here.

'Tennis has given me so much. I am filled with so much gratitude for this sport and for the people who helped me along the way.
'I want to thank my family – mum, dad, my sisters and brother for their sacrifice and support. It's only because of that that I am standing here today.
'I want you to know when this crowd cheers for me, they're cheering for you guys, too. I wouldn't be here without you.
'Also to all the coaches, physios, trainers, everyone I've worked with in this whole journey.
"You all know who you are. Because of your hard work and help I was able to live out my dreams.
'How lucky am I to live out my dreams? So, thank you!'
Bouchard – named after the Duke of York, Prince Andrew's younger daughter Princess Eugenie – became the first player to represent Canada in a Grand Slam singles final when she made it to the 2014 Wimbledon final.

Eugenie Bouchard
It was a bittersweet experience as she was crushed 6-3 6-0 by Czech player Petra Kvitova in the Wimbledon final on Centre Court.
That same season she made the semi-finals of the Australian Open and French Open and reached the Last 16 of the US Open.
Two years ago, she achieved a career high by helping Canada win the Billie Jean King Cup Final in Seville.
Her career has been derailed by inconsistent play and injury, which included a serious shoulder surgery that kept her off the court for 17 months between 2021-2022.
There was also a lengthy lawsuit against the United States Tennis Association (USTA) after she suffered a concussion when she slipped and fell in a US Open locker room in 2015.
In February 2018, a jury decided Bouchard was partially at fault – it determined the USTA was 75 per cent to blame for the incident, with Bouchard 25 per cent to blame.
More people have gotten to know Bouchard in recent years from stunning beach swimsuit photoshoots – the most famous was for Sports Illustrated – than from tennis appearances.
Since her heyday, she has faded from the competitive arena and slumped to 1,062 in the world ranking due to inactivity.

Lionel Messi's bodyguard hit with new suspension three months after revealing he was banned from MLS

Lionel Messi 's bodyguard has been suspended for 'improper conduct' for the remainder of the Leagues Cup, according to reports. Following an incident in Inter Miami's game against Atlas this week, the disciplinary committee confirmed that a member of staff from the MLS club had been suspended. A statement read: 'After the July 30 Inter Miami CF vs. Club Atlas match, a member of Inter Miami's club delegation displayed improper conduct by entering restricted areas without an official event credential. 'In accordance with the Leagues Cup 2025 Tournament Regulations, the Disciplinary Committee has suspended the individual involved from all technical areas for the remainder of Leagues Cup 2025 and issued an undisclosed fine to Inter Miami CF.' ESPN have since reported that the individual in question is none other than Messi's personal bodyguard Yassine Cheuko. Cheuko was seen entering the pitch - after the final whistle - to break up a discussion between the two groups of players and made contact with individuals from Atlas. One Atlas star then addressed the issue in his post-match press conference and insisted that Cheuko did not have permission to enter the field. Defender Matheus Doria said: 'We already know that our board works very well and will take care of the issue. 'I understand that Messi's bodyguard is there to protect Messi from a possible entry by a fan, I don't know, but between players, he doesn't have that permission. 'It's not up to us to say much or give our opinion on the matter, but the board and those in charge of the Leagues Cup have already seen it and will take charge of what can and can't be done. 'Because as long as it protects not only Messi but the other players, and the physical integrity of the players who are there, that's fine. But if it's for other issues, no one will agree, but it's not up to me to do anything.' After serving a one-match suspension, Messi returned to action for Inter Miami in the game against Atlas and provided assists for both goals in the 2-1 victory. The news comes three months after Cheuko claimed that he had been banned for MLS and CONCACAF matches. Speaking to House of Highlights, he said in April: 'They don't allow me to be on the field anymore. I was in Europe for seven years working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch. 'I arrived in the United States, and in 20 months of work, 16 people have already invaded the pitch. There's a huge problem here. I'm not the problem. Let me help Messi. 'I love MLS and CONCACAF, but we have to work together. I love helping. I'm not better than anyone, but I have a wealth of experience in Europe. It's fine, I understand their decision, but I think we could do better'. Cheuko, a trained MMA fighter who was personally chosen by Inter Miami president David Beckham upon the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner's arrival in the US. In a bizarre turn of events, he recently doubled down on his desire to batter Logan Paul in the boxing ring. Paul initially challenged Messi to a fight amid the legal battle between their drinks brands Prime and Mas+. Cheuko offered to take Messi's place, but Paul reportedly turned down a £11.3million ($15m) boxing match and instead challenged him to a bare knuckle fight in the streets of Puerto Rico.

Washington Commanders move step closer to $3.7bn DC stadium… but Donald Trump threat still looms large

The Washington Commanders have received the green light to build a new $3.7billion stadium in DC - despite Donald Trump 's threat to scupper those plans if they don't revert their name back to the Redskins. Trump says he intends to block federal support for the stadium project unless the Commanders change back to the name it formerly adopted before being axed in 2020 amid pressure from fans, sponsors and Native American groups who considered 'Redskins' a racial slur. 'I may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back to the original "Washington Redskins," and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, "Washington Commanders," I won't make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington,' the president said on Truth Social last month. With Trump's threat still looming large, the Commanders cleared another hurdle in their aim to return to the site of their former home, RFK Stadium, on Friday when the District of Columbia Council approved the legislation. The bill passed by a 9-3 vote, though it still must be approved a second time by the council before being sent to Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, who negotiated the original plan with Commanders owner Josh Harris in April. Washington currently plays at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, but aims to open a new venue in 2030. After the bill was passed, Harris said on Friday: 'Today's approval by the Council is transformational for D.C. and brings the Commanders back to our spiritual home. Like many fans, RFK was the site of memories that fueled my love for this team and this city. Now we're closer than ever to reigniting that energy for a new generation. 'We're incredibly grateful to the Mayor and the Council throughout this process for their leadership and guidance. 'This is a historic moment. This project is about more than delivering a world-class stadium worthy of our players, fans and the region. It's about revitalizing a critical part of our city, creating thousands of jobs and unlocking long-term economic benefits for the District. We look forward to working with our fans, residents, community leaders and elected officials to deliver on this vision.' The ownership group led by Harris has been considering locations in Washington, Maryland and Virginia since buying the team from Dan Snyder in 2022. Congress passed a bill transferring the RFK Stadium land to the city that was signed by then-President Joe Biden in early January. That paved the way for making it possible to replace the old stadium with a mixed-use development, including the new playing field for the Commanders. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson's office recently estimated the redevelopment could generate $26.6bn in tax revenue over 30 years. The district would contribute $1bn toward the stadium project, while the team would fund the remaining $2.7bn. However, Trump is now threatening to stand in the way of the project if his Redskins wish is not fulfilled. That issue did not come up in Friday's council meeting. Fans and even some Native American groups have voiced support for the team's new ownership group to revert to 'Redskins.' Several public opinion polls of self-identified Native Americans have found most were not offended by the term, while critics have pointed to academic research by the University of Michigan and UC Berkeley that found the opposite was true. Trump appeared to reference the public polling in favor of a name change on Sunday. 'Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen,' he claimed. 'Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!' He also demanded the same from MLB's Cleveland Guardians, née: 'Indians.' 'Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past,' Trump wrote.

Matt Bloomfield believes it was about time Luton had some luck

It was cruel on Wimbledon who had limited the hosts to a single shot on target until that point as they coped admirably with the step up after winning the League Two play-off final. Bloomfield, who took over in January but despite a strong finish to the campaign was unable to save the team from the drop, was asked whether he felt his side deserved their late good fortune. 'Yes,' he said. 'We feel like there's certain things that have gone against us over the last period of time. 'One thing you can't do is whine about it. All you can do is get on with your work, and you have to be grateful when the gods shine on you and give you a little bit of fortune. 'There were only two teams in the last 10 league games (last season) that got more points than us – Burnley and Leeds. 'But after being relegated you can't expect that everything's going to be looked on smoothly with sunshine and smiles.' Prior to the late winner, defender Reuell Walters had had Luton's only attempt on target in the 63rd minute, drawing an excellent save from Bishop with a half-volley struck from range. 'Relived and pleased to get the win,' added Bloomfield. 'Pleased with elements of the performance – the togetherness, the unity within the group. 'Frustration that we didn't create more clearcut opportunities and look more threatening. But pleased to get off to a winning start. 'We can't expect to click our fingers and get to the final product overnight. There's been a definite change of identity which we saw on show tonight. 'We're an evolving group, we're a new group. Now it's about getting better every week and keep working to where we want to get to.' Dons boss Johnnie Jackson, whose team were playing in the third tier for the first time since 2022, said: 'I'm gutted for my players and supporters. To lose the game in that manner was cruel. 'It's a fortunate goal from their point of view. They made us defend that situation, caught us in that position but that rarely happened to my team all night. I thought we defended brilliantly. 'To lose it on an own goal on the side of the bar is a hard one to take.'
