'The higher the cocoa percentage, the more of the cocoa bean's outer layer — called the bran — is retained during processing,' she said. That bran, a form of insoluble fiber, can help support digestion and gut health, she said.
Many Americans don't hit their recommended fiber intake — 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men per day — and while Lopez said dark chocolate shouldn't be a go-to source, it can be seen as a 'fiber-boosting flavor enhancer.' An ounce of 70% cacao can have 2-3 grams of fiber, while 100% cacao can have up to 7 grams. You'll really win when you pair it with foods that are also fiber-rich. The only two exercises you need for upper body muscle, according to a Sports Scientist

The majority of us don't have hours to train in the gym, but does that mean you can't build some serious upper-body muscle? Absolutely not. In fact, you don't need to waste time grinding through endless sets of 10 different exercises. According to Sports Scientist, Dr. Pak Androulakis-Korakakis, you just need two exercises to build upper body muscle – and no, the bench press isn't one of them. In fact, neither requires a barbell or even dumbbells. 'These two exercises are like the squat and the deadlift, but for your upper body,' he says in his video. He also adds that you can superset them too, which is ideal if you're even more tight on time. What are they? Chin-ups and dips. 'With these two exercises, you tick a lot of boxes: chest, front delts, triceps, biceps, upper back (to an extent), back and forearms,' he explains. The fact that you need minimal kit for both which is a bonus too. Let's break down each exercise in more detail… Dr Pak says chin-ups are the greatest of all time exercises and 'one of the simplest ways to get a bigger back and biceps'. What's even better is that they require no set-up time – as all you need is a pull-up bar – and are pretty straightforward when it comes to execution: simply grab the bar with a supinated grip (palms facing towards you) or neutral grip (palms inwards), and pull yourself up. They can also be progressively overloaded too, which is one of the key principles for building muscle. So, even if you become a master at chin-ups, there are ways in which you can make them harder, such as adding a weight belt, wearing a weighted vest, slowing down the eccentric, etc., to help you progress. If you're still struggling to master your first chin-up you can use a resistance band for assistance, and focus on vertical pulling exercises, like the lat pull-down, horizontal rowing movements, like the dumbbell/barbell rows, and negative chin-ups. How to do chin-ups: Grab the pull up bar with an underhand grip (palms facing you), your hands shoulder-width apart and lift your feet off the ground, so that you're hanging freely from the bar Draw your elbows down towards your pockets to pull yourself up and your chin over the bar Pause here for a second then, with control, extend the elbows to lower yourself back towards the ground Dips are another classic upper exercise that'll work your chest, triceps, and front delts. "You can get an amazing stretch on them and absolutely annihilate your triceps and your entire chest," says Dr Pak. Similar to the chin-ups, you can easily progress dips once you're able to smash out numerous bodyweight reps, using the same methods – slowing down the eccentric, using a weight belt or wearing a weighted vest. "You can try different grips, different hand positions, different torso angles to slightly emphasise the chest more or your triceps more or just feel comfortable," adds Dr Pak. To nail the technique, he advises leaning your torso slightly forward and keeping your elbows relatively close to your body. How to: Grab the dip bars with a neutral grip (your palms facing inwards), your arms extended straight, and your torso leaning slightly forwards Bending at the elbows, lower your body down towards the floor as far as you can comfortably go, whilst keeping them tucked close to your body (if you can get your elbows to a 90-degree angle, great, if not, don't worry, you can work up to this over time) Pause at the bottom for a second, then squeeze your triceps and extend your arms so that they return to your straight starting position

Detecting, monitoring skin cancers made easier with new screening technology
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 100,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma this year. The good news is now that treatments have advanced, death rates have declined. Diagnostic tools have also vastly improved to detect and monitor skin cancers. Vectra WB180 system takes just seconds to photograph spots Dr. Jonathan Unger, medical director of the Waldman Melanoma and Skin Cancer Center at Mount Sinai, showed CBS News New York the Vectra WB180 system. "Basically, it is a total body photography system," Unger said. "We use 26 cameras to photograph the entire body ... And then the system takes all of these photos, high-resolution photos, and stitches them together into a three-dimensional avatar." The Vectra WB180 system uses 26 cameras to photograph the entire body so doctors can monitor spots on patients' skin. CBS News New York This is relatively new screening technology with about 100 machines across the country. Unger says it takes just a matter of seconds instead of all the time necessary to photograph each individual spot. "Gives us a memory of every spot on the patient's body, right? Once we have a moment in time, we can always look back and say, what did this thing look like? Was it there? Was it not there? Has it been changing?" he said. He adds accessing details of a patient's mole is much quicker, again, taking only seconds. There are additional benefits to this technology, as well. "Decide with greater certainty and more information whether something needs to be checked, tested, biopsied, et cetera," he said. "In our practice, it's really reduced the number of biopsies because a lot of our patients have hundreds, if not more than that, moles, all of which are irregular." He continued, "This allows us to have a higher level of confidence about what we're looking at and making a decision about." "It gives me the ability to take a deep breath and enjoy my life" Patient Jackie Mills has her spots scrutinized with the new machine after a scare several years ago. "In about 2020, I noticed a spot on my face that was new and rapidly changing," she said. But Mills says her dermatologist at that time wasn't that concerned. "I felt like it was getting bigger, changing colors, it was more jagged, and I really had to push and advocate for myself," she said. "Just had a gut feeling that something was wrong, and I was right." Mills was finally diagnosed with melanoma and had Mohs surgery to have the spot removed. "I had to kind of take it in for a minute and be like, I'm going to have a scar on my face for the rest of my life," she said. "It was that or not be here." Now she's checked every six months. "Not only is Dr. Unger looking at my spots, but he's using this machine to mathematically track what's going on from year to year. And I think that's just, it gives me the ability to take a deep breath and enjoy my life and not be constantly worried about melanoma coming back or being an issue," Mills said. The biggest safety tip from doctors is to use sunscreen every day. It can help prevent sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer.

Housing First intervention associated with reduced opioid overdoses
Opioid use disorder (OUD) has become a mounting public health crisis in the US, often disproportionately affecting individuals in the most vulnerable socioeconomic statuses. The homeless population has recently shown particularly high rates of OUD and opioid addiction, which has provoked debates over the most effective strategies for treating substance abuse while humanely and equitably promoting public safety in afflicted areas. Among the most controversial approaches is the Housing First philosophy, which posits that providing free or low-cost living accommodations for people experiencing homelessness facilitates addiction treatment, especially if accompanied by pharmacotherapy and mental health counselling. In the June 2025 edition of JAMA Network Open, Isabelle Rao and Margaret Brandeau simulated the effects of Housing First interventions on OUD overdoses and mortality under various conditions. The study concludes that a Housing First approach to OUD patients experiencing homelessness, whether accompanied by treatment or not, leads to a reduction in both overdoses and mortality. GlobalData epidemiologists forecast growth in the 12-month diagnosed prevalent cases of opioid addiction with OUD from over 739,000 to approximately 773,000 between 2025 and 2033. Successful implementation of interventions such as Housing First may reduce severe injury or death in this growing patient pool, particularly among those experiencing housing instability or homelessness. Rao and Brandeau modelled various scenarios in which a nationally representative patient population of 1,000 adults with OUD experiencing homelessness were either provided with free or affordable housing or none over five years. Additionally, these populations were simulated to receive methadone therapy under both housing conditions. As displayed in Figure 1, total overdoses over five years were notably lower among individuals provided with housing, at 464 per 1,000 population in those exposed to the Housing First intervention and 533 in the unexposed group over five years. This pattern was found among both fatal and nonfatal overdoses. Similarly, all-cause mortality simulation showed 132 deaths per 1,000 population among housed OUD patients compared to 186 among those without housing (Figure 2). The authors attribute the lower mortality rate to the significant reduction in fatal overdoses in the housed population. In addition to the improvements in health outcomes for OUD patients provided with housing, the cost-effectiveness analysis suggests that a Housing First policy would be more effective when compared to the status quo due to direct and indirect cost benefits from curbing homelessness and OUD overdoses. The work by Rao and Brandeau offers a valuable contribution to the ongoing polemical debates over homelessness and opioid addiction in the US. As officials seek solutions for the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals suffering from these social and medical conditions, data such as that of the authors is critical in order to guide or refine policy solutions. However, Housing First should be only one component of a wider suite of actions to curb opioid addiction, including education of healthcare providers and patients, enforcement of limitations on irresponsible prescribing habits among physicians, and increasing the availability of life-saving treatments such as naloxone. In the absence of such comprehensive, concerted effort, the opioid crisis will continue to have a sizable impact on countless American communities.
