Farmers block NH-16 demanding halt to forcible land acquisition for solar project in Nellore district

Time of India4 days ago
Vijayawada: An angry protest by the farmers of Karedu village in Ulavapadu mandal, Nellore district, brought traffic on National Highway-16 (Chennai-Kolkata) to a grinding halt on Sunday.
The farmers have been demanding the immediate withdrawal of the forcible acquisition of their agricultural lands for setting up a private solar plant.
About a thousand women, farmers, and tribal people from Karedu staged a half-hour road blockade on the highway, demanding a stop to the forced land acquisition and action against the Ulavapadu sub inspector for illegal arrests.
As the protest escalated, Kandukur sub-collector Sripuja rushed to the spot and assured the farmers that the land acquisition process would be withheld following advice from the state government.
The state government had issued a notification to acquire about 8,500 acres of land, mostly owned by SC, ST, and weaker sections in Karedu village.
Meanwhile, the CPI (M) state committee strongly condemned the severe repression, intimidation, and illegal arrests of people protesting the forcible land acquisition for Indosol company. The committee demanded the immediate withdrawal of the land acquisition proposal by the state government.

CPI(M) also demanded an investigation into the TDP, BJP and Janasena coalition, which had earlier labelled the proposed land allocation as a major scam during the previous YSRCP tenure.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, CPI (M) state secretary V Srinivasa Rao questioned how the NDA government is facilitating land allocation to the same company it opposed while in opposition. He said people have formed a committee to fight against the forcible land acquisition for the solar company and launched a peaceful agitation.
However, the government used the police force to suppress the agitators. He criticized the forcible acquisition of lands owned by Dalits, tribals, and other marginalized sections for Indosol, a subsidiary of Shirdi Sai Electricals.
He condemned the arrest of protestors, including women, who called for a blockade of NH-16. "It is deplorable that the police arrested women for raising their voice against forcible acquisition," said Srinivasa Rao.
Local farmers leader Miriyam Srinivasulu, CPI(M) leaders Talluri Malyadri, G. Venkateswarlu, G.V.B. Kumar, AAP Kandukuru constituency convener Neti Maheshwara Rao, AICC member Sunkara Padmashri, social activist Dr. K. Vasundhara, and 26 farmers from Karedu and Peddapallipalem were among those arrested by the police.
The CPI (M) state committee demanded action against the sub inspector who mistreated Sunkara Padmasri and Neti Maheshwara Rao.

Elon Musk's father Errol Musk to Donald Trump: ‘Listen to Elon…he's not a fool'

Elon Musk 's father Errol Musk has shared an advice for his son. According to a report by Al-Arabiya English, Errol Musk advised his son Elon to 'stay silent' and concentrate on his businesses, especially Tesla. He acknowledged that politics can be complicated, with 'tempers flare' and 'human behavior is so complicated,' and suggested it's better for Elon to stay focused on what he does best—running his companies. Errol also expressed his surprise over the Tesla and SpaceX CEO's feud with US President Donald Trump . He said: 'As far as President Trump going against Elon, I can't really understand what is going on. It makes no sense to me at all.' Errol also expressed his optimism despite the rising tension between the two. He said: 'Something good will come out of this, I'm pretty sure.' Elon Musk's father supports Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill According to the report, Errol and Elon have different opinions about the Trump administration's One Big Beautiful Bill . While the tech billionaire has been a vocal critique of Trump's bill, Errol, on the other hand, supports it. So much so that he threatened to create a new political group, calling it the 'America Party,' if the bill is passed by the Senate. Trump responded by questioning Musk's loyalty and criticizing electric vehicle mandates, which he called 'ridiculous.' Court cannot punish B for A's mistake: Counsel on HC order nixing 32k primary teachers' appts

Kolkata: Senior counsel Anindya Mitra challenged the 2023 Calcutta High Court order by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay annulling services of 32,000 primary school teachers and argued that a court of law cannot cancel appointments of people not made parties in a case because that would constitute a violation of the principles of natural justice. Arguing before a division bench of the Calcutta HC on Thursday, Mitra said, "The petitioners who moved the single bench didn't even make such a prayer." The senior counsel restricted his arguments to the 2016 selection of primary teachers that concluded in 2017 and distinguished it from the 2014 Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). Mitra argued that the writ petition was moved five years after the selection process had concluded and pointed out that the petitioners did not make any allegations of illegality. "The basis of the illegality recorded in the judgement was the judge's own, based on irrelevant considerations. "A minister or an MLA or a former president might have been arrested for doing something wrong. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo But for an offence committed by A, you cannot punish B," Mitra said. He submitted that the judge made these observations in relation to the 2014 TET and not the 2016 selection process by the Board. The senior counsel drew the division bench's attention to the part of the single bench judgement stating: "the sense of justice is above the sense of law" and argued that such a conclusion goes against the basic framework of the Constitution and rule of law. The counsel pointed out that the judge, while taking on an investigation on his own, had questioned candidates from only four of 20 districts and made a generalised observation on aptitude tests, when nine among those questioned had said that aptitude tests were held. Mitra cited SC judgements to substantiate that a court cannot generalise issues. He further pointed out from the records that the judge had initially ordered the cancellation of 36,000 teachers. "He made changes to his order, calling it a typographical error. Is this believable?"

SIR an attempt to disenfranchise 20% Bihar voters, alleges Cong

1 2 Patna: The Congress on Thursday accused the Election Commission of attempting to disenfranchise nearly 20% of voters in Bihar under the garb of the ongoing special intensive revision of electoral rolls. Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar claimed that the EC had made up its mind to deny voting rights to large sections of the population, especially migrant workers who stay outside the state under compulsion but return home during elections to cast their votes. "It seems the EC has already made up its mind to deny voting rights to Bihar people," he said, questioning the integrity of the entire exercise. He added that people affected by floods have nothing left in their homes and are in no position to produce documents. "Every time there is a flood, their homes get submerged, and they must rebuild from scratch. Where will people living in such conditions bring proof for you?" he asked. He further alleged that the BLOs, who have been assigned the task of verifying thousands of voters, have not been provided the necessary resources to do their job properly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Krishna Allavaru, Congress's in charge for Bihar, accused the EC of acting under govt pressure. "Whenever the govt faces a crisis, its agencies begin such actions," he said. "It is strange that the very voters who elected this government are now being asked to prove their identity. By excluding Aadhaar from this voter revision process, eight crore people are being asked to submit documents they don't have," he added. Pawan Khera, chairman of the party's media and publicity department, described the entire exercise as a move to delete voters' names before the upcoming elections. "The EC's decision is to disenfranchise people, which we strongly oppose," Khera said, linking the timing of the revision drive to a recent opinion survey. "The process was launched just as a new survey showed a surge in popularity for the INDIA bloc and our leader Rahul Gandhi," he said.
