Meghan Markle's dad swerved her wedding due to unexpected 'six-word reason'
It has been years since Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex had an active relationship with her father, Thomas Markle Senior. The Duchess has shared in the past that she "grieves" the loss of their once-close bond, and it is a known fact that Thomas hasn't met his grandchildren: six year old Prince Archie and four year old Princess Lilibet.
The rift between Meghan and her father started ahead of Prince Harry and Meghan's high-profile wedding. In the run-up to their nuptials, Thomas was caught up in a media storm for staging photographs with paparazzi while getting his wedding attire tailored.
These staged photos caused quite the stir and, alongside Thomas's serious health concerns, were rumoured to be why he failed to attend Meghan's wedding, resulting in King Charles stepping in to accompany his daughter-in-law down part of the aisle.
Yet, according to a Royal confidante, there might be a far more significant reason for Thomas's absence from Windsor on Megan's special day – one that supposedly wasn't related to the notorious paparazzi incident.
Royal author Sally Bedell Smith has disclosed in her Substack newsletter, Royal Extra, new information provided by one of Queen Elizabeth II's trusted friends - information which sheds light on the true cause of Thomas Markle's failure to witness his daughter's wedding, reports the Mirror.
Lady Elizabeth Anson, the late Queen's cousin and close confidante, revealed to Sally Bedell Smith that Thomas Markle's primary reason for not attending the star-studded wedding was due to fear.
According to Lady Elizabeth, arrangements had been made for Thomas to attend, including an accessibility plan for St George's Chapel. As Thomas "didn't do steps" due to health issues, he was scheduled to enter through a side door.
However, in the end, he was simply "too scared to attend the wedding," Lady Elizabeth disclosed.
Meghan has since shared that she discovered her father wouldn't be at her wedding through the media, and found it challenging to communicate with him directly in the lead-up to the big day.
She was appalled when her father participated in and received payment for a paparazzi photoshoot - as was her mother, Doria Ragland. In Harry and Meghan's self-titled Netflix documentary, Doria expressed her shock at her ex-husband's actions, stating, "as a parent, that's not what you do. That's not parenting."

Good Morning Britain star announces break from ITV show
Good Morning Britain star Susanna Reid has confirmed she will be taking a break from the ITV show as she is "off on her summer holidays." Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid surprised viewers with an unexpected announcement as Thursday's episode came to a close, revealing that she would be stepping away from the show for a while. The seasoned broadcaster had returned to the GMB studio that morning (July 10), joining co-host Richard Madeley to deliver the day's top news headlines. However, as the programme wrapped up, Susanna shared some personal news, telling viewers that she would be taking a break from the show for the next few weeks as she begins her summer break, the Mirror reports. Her departure means fans won't see her on-screen again until after the break. However she didn't confirm an exact return date. Addressing the viewers at home, she stated: "I am off on my summer holidays and we'll see you at the start of the new term." An official replacement for Susanna during her time off has yet to be confirmed, though it's expected that one of Good Morning Britain's regular presenters such as Ranvir Singh, Kate Garraway or Charlotte Hawkins will be stepping in. Since making the move to ITV in 2024, Susanna has firmly cemented her place as one of the most recognisable stars on breakfast television. Prior to joining Good Morning Britain, she worked on other programmes such as BBC Breakfast, Sunday Morning Live and The Andrew Marr Show. She has become a familiar face on our screens from Monday to Wednesday, regularly working on the show alongside several other rotating co-hosts. Her announcement comes at a time when ITV is reportedly preparing a significant shake-up of its daytime schedule - a move that has put several on-air roles in jeopardy. These substantial changes have sparked major concern amongst both employees and audiences regarding the future of their beloved programmes and presenters on the network. ITV chiefs have revealed a major shake-up for both Loose Women and Lorraine as part of fresh cost-cutting initiatives. Starting in 2026, Lorraine Kelly's morning show will be reduced to a 30-minute slot, airing from 9:30am to 10am - cutting down from its current one-hour format. The programme will also be shortened to just 30 weeks a year, meaning the regular stand-in hosts who cover for Lorraine during breaks will find themselves out of work. ITV bosses have also announced major changes to Loose Women, revealing that the show will be moving to "a seasonal basis for 30 weeks of the year" according to network bosses. The potential job losses have left viewers speculating on who and which presenters might face the chop. These new changes were announced in May by Kevin Lygo, Managing Director of ITV's Media and Entertainment Division, who stated that the changes were essential to "generate savings."

BBC Escape To The Country star died after vomiting blood, inquest told
Emma Izzard was rushed to hospital before her death due to vomiting blood and going into cardiac arrest twice. An Escape To The Country star died after vomiting blood, an inquest has heard. Emma Izzard, 53, died at Norfolk and Norwick Hospital in November last year, reports the Mirror. She appeared on the BBC programme with her then partner, Kym Lofthouse. Norfolk Coroner's Court heard Ms Izzard had been battling alcoholism before her sad death. Her alcohol consumption increased in July 2022 after her mother became ill. Ms Izzard was raced to hospital on November 19 after she began vomiting blood and suffered a cardiac arrest, but was resuscitated. However, just one day after her hospital admission, Ms Izzard died after she went into cardiac arrest while undergoing a gastroscopy in an operating theatre. A gastroscopy is a procedure in which a thin tube with a camera attached is inserted into the digestive tract to examine the stomach, oesophagus and duodenum to look at symptoms including pain, bleeding or difficulty swallowing. At the inquest, her death was ruled as an oesophageal and variceal bleed, with alcohol -related liver disease. Emma's former partner, Kym said: "Emma had a very strong bond with her mother. Emma lived with her for many years and continued to look after her even when she did move out. "[Emma's] alcohol levels increased when her mother was taken to hospital in July 2022, and she thought she was going to lose her. After six months of secret drinking, she wanted to stop but couldn't get the help required quickly enough and began drinking again." Emma attended rehab on several occasions, but each relapse caused her drinking to "become heavier", a court heard. Emma's father, who died when she was just a teenager, also suffered with alcoholism. Speaking about Emma, Kym added: "Emma was a larger-than-life character who was very popular both in and outside of her work, and she had many friends. "She was very caring but had had personal struggles earlier in her life that she was unable to deal with." Emma also attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and received some help from Change Grow Live (CGL), an alcohol misuse charity. "Emma did not want to drink but it had taken a strong hold of her," Kym said, adding: "And she didn't and couldn't deal with her problems. Her drinking became heavier, and she became desperate." Addressing the court, area coroner Johanna Thompson said: "Emma had a history of excess alcohol consumption and had been diagnosed with alcohol -related liver disease. At the hospital, Emma was clearly presenting as very poorly. "She was white, dehydrated, and was considered to have symptoms of acute alcohol withdrawal. Sadly, after being given surgery, treatment could not save her at the end of the day." The court heard Ms Izzard worked as a general assistant for a charity and dealt with her everyday life "competently when not drinking." She appeared on the BBC One programme in 2021 while living in Luton, Bedfordshire, when she and her partner were hoping to start a new life in Norfolk due to its "clean air" and "slower pace of life". However, after moving to North Walsham, she and Kym later parted ways but remained close friends.
