Puri, Thousands of devotees lined up in front of Shree Gundicha Temple here on Friday for 'Sandhya Darshan' on the auspicious occasion of 'Navami Tithi', the last day to offer obeisance to the sibling deities — Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath — at their birthplace before 'Bahuda Yatra.' Bahuda Yatra, scheduled for Saturday, marks the return journey of the deities to their original abode after the nine-day annual sojourn that began with Rath Yatra on June 27.
DGP YB Khurania and top officials of the state administration supervised the proceedings to ensure a smooth darshan.
"Devotees are entering the temple in queues and the process has been continuing smoothly since early morning. All arrangements have been made keeping the devotees' safety in mind. People are being advised to follow the norms," Khurania said.
Besides Khurania, ADG Soumendra Priyadarshi, senior bureaucrat Aravind Agarwal, Puri Collector Chanchal Rana, SP Pinak Mishra and others were also present.
All arrangements were made anticipating a massive turnout of devotees on the occasion, Mishra said.
Security has been tightened following the tragic stampede incident near the temple on June 29, which left three people dead and around 50 injured.
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration had earlier said that public entry to the temple would be permitted till 6 PM on Friday.
"On the occasion of 'Sandhya Darshan' on Friday, public entry at the Singhadwar of Shree Gundicha Temple will remain closed from 6 PM onwards. This arrangement is being made in view of the necessary rituals and detailed preparations to be conducted ahead of the auspicious Bahuda Yatra of the deities," SJTA informed in an X post.
Sandhya Darshan takes place on Asadha Shukla Paksha Navami tithi every year at Gundicha Temple. It is considered one of the most auspicious days during the nine-day Rath Yatra festival, said Pandit Suryanarayan Rathsharma.
As part of the preparations, the chariots have been rotated southward, ready for the journey back to the 12th-century shrine.
Meanwhile, Puri Police conducted hotel checks across the city to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of all guests, police said.

Srimandir's Ratna Bhandar repair to be over by Niladri Bije: Gajapati

BHUBANESWAR: Repair and renovation of the Ratna Bhandar of Shree Jagannath temple, which began in December last year, will be completed by Niladri Bije on July 8, Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb said. He reviewed the final phase of renovation works of Ratna Bhandar on Thursday along with Srimandir technical committee members and officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). He said this repair work was necessary and the structural condition of both Bahara Bhandar and Bhitara Ratna Bhandar was extremely poor. 'Ratna Bhandar now appears safe and has been beautifully done. The renovation has been done in alignment with the shrine's Kalinga architectural style,' he said. Gajapati added that this is a historic work as the inner Ratna Bhandar remained sealed for four decades. 'Soon after the work is completed by Niladri Bije and after the Trinity return to the Ratna Simhasana, the inventorisation of Ratna Bhandar will begin as per the SOP,' he added. ASI Puri circle head DB Garnayak said, 'At least 550 damaged stone blocks and a corbel arch have been changed in both the Bhitara and Bahara Ratna Bhandar. These are the major stone blocks from exterior and interior side walls of both chambers of Ratna Bhandar, which had deteriorated over the years.' Apart from this, 15 damaged beams in the structure have been replaced with stainless steel beams, both big and small. In the Bhitara Ratna Bhandar, black granite flooring has been done and the granite was sourced from Nilagiri. 'All the stone work has been done in Khondalite stone sourced from within the state as Khondalite was originally used in Ratna Bhandar,' he said. Besides, the renovation works have been done entirely in traditional dry masonry method. Currently, monitoring work is underway. Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) chief Arabinda Padhee said that the steel door of outer Ratna Bhandar has been replaced with a new stainless steel door and outside it, a Burma teak wood gate has been installed.

Ratna Bhandar safe, says Puri Gajapati

Puri: The 'Ratna Bhandar' (treasure chest) of Lord Jagannath temple is safe, and the repair work of the chamber is almost complete, Puri's titular King, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, said on Thursday. The Gajapati Maharaja inspected the Ratna Bhandar repair work being carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India, the custodian of the 12th-century shrine, for 11 months. Besides him, Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee and technical team members of the ASI entered the Ratna Bhandar and supervised both the outer and inner chambers of the treasury, which were in a dilapidated state. Deb said the structural revamp and aesthetics of the Ratna Bhandar reflect Odisha's timeless temple architecture. Around 600 stone slabs were replaced with new ones, replicating traditional design while reinforcing safety, the titular King told reporters outside the 65-metre tall imposing temple. 'Whatever little work is left is expected to be completed by Niladri Bije (return of the deities to the temple after Rath yatra) on July 8,' he said. Deb said after completion of the repair work, the SJTA, with permission of the State government, would undertake an inventory of valuables. The Ratna Bhandar was reopened on Sunday after 46 years for an inventory of valuables and the repair of its structure, officials said. The ASI began working inside the Ratna Bhandar in July 2024, when it was reopened after 46 years to prepare an inventory of valuables and repair its structure. Sources said a total of 14 beams have been repaired. More than 80 skilled craftsmen are engaged in the repair work of the Ratna Bhandar. Padhee said interior repairs are nearly complete, with final touches to the outer treasury expected within the next two days. The outer and inner parts of Ratna Bhandar are being preserved by applying chemical coatings, he said while replying to a question. He said there have been additions like new stainless-steel and Burma Teak wood security gates. The gate will have silver cladding later on, he said.
