Vietnam, US top leaders announce agreement reached on trade deal

July 3, 2025
HANOI – General Secretary Tô Lâm held a telephone conversation with United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday to discuss Việt Nam–US relations and negotiations on reciprocal tariffs between the two countries.
Vietnamese and US top leaders expressed their delight at the strong and positive development of bilateral relations. General Secretary Tô Lâm and President Donald Trump welcomed the agreement reached by the two countries' negotiating teams on the Joint Việt Nam–United States Statement on a Fair, Balanced, and Reciprocal Trade Agreement Framework.
President Trump highly appreciated Việt Nam's commitment to granting preferential market access to US goods, including large-engine vehicles.
He affirmed that the US would significantly reduce reciprocal tariffs on many of Việt Nam's export items and would continue to work with Việt Nam to address obstacles affecting bilateral trade relations, particularly in areas prioritised by both sides.
Party leader Lâm proposed that the US soon recognise Việt Nam as a market economy and lift export restrictions on certain high-tech products.
General Secretary Lâm and President Trump also discussed key orientations and major measures to promote the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the years to come.
The two leaders agreed to enhance delegation exchanges, high-level and all-level contacts, and to strengthen cooperation in the areas of economy, trade and investment, especially in key and breakthrough sectors such as science and high technology.
On this occasion, General Secretary Lâm reiterated his invitation for President Trump and the First Lady to visit Việt Nam, and expressed his hope to meet President Trump again in the near future. President Trump warmly thanked the General Secretary for the invitation and expressed his desire to meet again soon.
On Truth Social, US President Trump stated that, per the 'Great Deal of Cooperation,' Việt Nam would 'pay the United States a 20% tariff on any and all goods sent into our Territory, and a 40% Tariff on any Transshipping.'
This is down significantly from the 46 per cent in the original reciprocal tariff plan announced on April 2, 2025, a date Trump referred to as 'Liberation Day.'
In return, Việt Nam would cut all tariffs for American goods into the country.
'The United States would reportedly gain 'TOTAL ACCESS' to Vietnamese markets, enabling American products—particularly large engine vehicles like SUVs—to be sold in Việt Nam at zero tariff,' Trump wrote.
He went on to say that 'the SUV or, as it is sometimes referred to, Large Engine Vehicle, which does so well in the United States, will be a wonderful addition to the various product lines within Vietnam.'
The two countries' leader had a phone call two days after the US President announced a sweeping tariff policy targeting most of the US trade partners in early April, in which Party chief Tô Lâm has offered to slash all tariffs for US goods to zero, and urged the US to do the same for Vietnamese goods.
Việt Nam and the US in the grace period have conducted three rounds of negotiations on a trade deal.

Vietnam posts strongest first-half GDP growth in over a decade

July 7, 2025 HANOI – The Vietnamese economy achieved its strongest performance in over a decade, with gross domestic product (GDP) rising by 7.52 per cent in the first half of the year, the highest since 2011, according to the Ministry of Finance's National Statistics Office of Việt Nam (NSO). At a press conference in Hà Nội, NSO Director Nguyễn Thị Hương highlighted that this was a positive result, reflecting the whole political system's determination, concerted efforts, and drastic actions in managing and implementing socio-economic development tasks amidst regional and global volatility. Breaking down the GDP by sectors, agro-forestry-fishery expanded by 3.84 per cent, industry and construction by 8.33 per cent, and the services sector by 8.14 per cent, contributing 5.59 per cent, 42.4 per cent, and 52.21 per cent, respectively, to the overall growth. Farming activities maintained stable growth, meeting both domestic consumption and export demands. Agricultural value-added increased 3.51 per cent compared to the same period last year, while that of the forestry sector rose 7.42 per cent but with minimal impact due to its smaller share, and the fisheries sector 4.21 per cent. The industrial and construction sector saw notable gains, with the overall industrial index rising 8.07 per cent against the same time last year. In the meantime, the processing and manufacturing industry was the motive of the economy, posting a 10.11 per cent growth. The electricity production and distribution sector grew by 4.2 per cent, while water supply and waste management services expanded by 7.3 per cent. The construction industry delivered exceptional performance with 9.62 per cent growth, the highest rate compared to the same period from 2011 to 2025. In stark contrast, the mining sector contracted 4.25 per cent. Several service industries showed impressive performance across the board. Wholesale and retail trade increased by 7.03 per cent, transportation and warehousing 9.82 per cent, and financial, banking, and insurance activities 6.53 per cent. The hospitality and catering sector experienced strong growth of 10.46 per cent. Public service sectors also recorded significant expansion as part of the country's organisational restructuring, with administrative and support services activities growing by 14.58 per cent, while activities of the Party, socio-political organisations, state management, national security and defence, and mandatory social security rising by 13.09 per cent. The economic structure in the first half saw agriculture, forestry, and fisheries accounting for 11.28 per cent of GDP, industry and construction representing 36.96 per cent, services comprising 43.40 per cent, and taxes less subsidies on products making up 8.36 per cent. — VNA/VNS

Trump calls Musk's formation of new party 'ridiculous' and criticises his own Nasa pick, World News

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Sunday (July 6) called Elon Musk's plans to form a new political party "ridiculous," launching new barbs at the tech billionaire and saying the Musk ally he once named to lead Nasa would have presented a conflict of interest given Musk's business interests in space. A day after Musk escalated his feud with Trump and announced the formation of a new US political party, the Republican president was asked about it before boarding Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, as he returned to Washington upon visiting his nearby golf club. "I think it's ridiculous to start a third party. We have a tremendous success with the Republican Party. The Democrats have lost their way, but it's always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to confusion," Trump told reporters. "It really seems to have been developed for two parties. Third parties have never worked, so he can have fun with it, but I think it's ridiculous." Shortly after speaking about Musk, Trump posted further comments on his Truth Social platform, saying, "I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely 'off the rails,' essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks." Musk announced on Saturday that he is establishing the "America Party" in response to Trump's tax-cut and spending bill, which Musk said would bankrupt the country. "What the heck was the point of @DOGE if he's just going to increase the debt by US$5 trillion (S$6.3 trillion)??" Musk wrote on X on Sunday, referring to the government downsizing agency he briefly led. Critics have said the bill will damage the US economy by significantly adding to the federal budget deficit. Musk said his new party would in next year's midterm elections look to unseat Republican lawmakers in Congress who backed the sweeping measure known as the "big, beautiful bill." Musk spent millions of dollars underwriting Trump's 2024 re-election effort and, for a time, regularly showed up at the president's side in the White House Oval Office and elsewhere. Their disagreement over the spending bill led to a falling out that Musk briefly tried unsuccessfully to repair. Trump has said Musk is unhappy because the measure, which Trump signed into law on Friday, takes away green-energy credits for Tesla's electric vehicles. The president has threatened to pull billions of dollars Tesla and SpaceX receive in government contracts and subsidies in response to Musk's criticism. Nasa appointment 'inappropriate' Trump in his social media comments also said it was "inappropriate" to have named Musk ally Jared Isaacman as Nasa administrator considering Musk's business with the space agency. In December Trump named Isaacman, a billionaire private astronaut, to lead Nasa but withdrew the nomination on May 31, before his Senate confirmation vote and without explanation. Trump, who has yet to announce a new Nasa nominee, on Sunday confirmed media reports he disapproved of Isaacman's previous support for Democratic politicians. "I also thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run Nasa, when Nasa is such a big part of Elon's corporate life," Trump said on Truth Social. "My Number One charge is to protect the American Public!" Musk's announcement of a new party immediately brought a rebuke from Azoria Partners, which said on Saturday it will postpone the listing of its Azoria Tesla Convexity exchange-traded fund because the party's creation posed "a conflict with his full-time responsibilities as CEO." Azoria was set to launch the Tesla ETF this week. Azoria CEO James Fishback posted on X several critical comments about the new party and reiterated his support for Trump. "I encourage the Board to meet immediately and ask Elon to clarify his political ambitions and evaluate whether they are compatible with his full-time obligations to Tesla as CEO," Fishback said. Gold prices drop as Trump signals trade deals, extends tariff reprieve

[BENGALURU] Gold prices dropped on Monday (Jul 7) after US President Donald Trump signalled progress on multiple trade agreements and announced extended tariff reprieve for several countries, dampening demand for the safe-haven metal. Spot gold was down 0.3 per cent at US$3,323.71 per ounce, as at 0028 GMT. US gold futures also fell 0.3 per cent to US$3,332.20. The US is close to finalising several trade agreements in the coming days and will notify other countries of higher tariff rates by Jul 9, Trump said on Sunday, with the higher rates scheduled to take effect on Aug 1. Trump announced in April a 10 per cent base tariff on most countries, with additional duties of up to 50 per cent. He later postponed the effective date for all but 10 per cent of those tariffs from Jul 9. The new date grants a three-week reprieve to most affected nations. Concerns over tariff-driven inflation have jostled expectations for Federal Reserve policy. Rate futures show traders no longer expect a Fed rate cut this month and are pricing in a total of just two quarter-point reductions by the year-end. Last week, Trump signed into law a massive package of tax and spending cuts at the White House, which as per nonpartisan analysis, will add more than US$3 trillion to the nation's US$36.2 trillion debt. The US dollar index weakened 0.3 per cent on Monday, after registering its second consecutive weekly loss last week. A lower US dollar makes greenback-priced bullion affordable for overseas buyers. Elsewhere, the first session of indirect Hamas-Israel ceasefire talks in Qatar ended inconclusively, two Palestinian sources familiar with the matter said early on Monday, adding that the Israeli delegation did not have a sufficient mandate to reach an agreement with Hamas. Spot silver was steady at US$36.94 per ounce, platinum shed 0.3 per cent to US$1,388.06 and palladium remain unchanged at US$1,134.38. REUTERS
