'He was so cool about it': British television presenter Sam Thompson reveals the 'mortifying' way he addressed King Charles, and the monarch's response

Sky News AU3 days ago

British presenter Sam Thompson has shared the embarrassing moment he called King Charles III "mate" and the laid-back way His Majesty responded.
The 32-year-old reality star-turned radio host was among a string of celebrities invited to Buckingham Palace on Wednesday for a reception hosted by the King ahead of this year's King's Trust Awards.
The 76-year-old monarch welcomed guests as part of the celebrations for his long-running charity which he founded as Prince of Wales to support disadvantaged youth.
The organisation, which turns 50 in 2026, has helped thousands of young people overcome barriers like mental health issues, poor education and youth unemployment.
Thompson, who was invited to present one of the night's eight awards to a Northern Irish teen named Taylor, took to Instagram to reflect on the moment and share his unfortunate slip-up.
"Complete honour and pinch me moment yesterday to be invited to the Palace," he wrote, alongside a carousel of photos from the event, including one showing him shaking hands with the King.
"I am lucky enough to be able to present an award to Taylor who is an incredibly special human," he continued.
"After spending some time with him, his story is one that I think will resonate with a lot of young men his age and I know this is only the beginning for him."
Thompson then confessed: "Also called the King 'mate' which was mortifying but he was cool about it!" punctuated with a laughing emoji.
He also posted a snap of his official invite to the Palace, captioning it: "Yesterday was crazy."
The Royal Family's official Instagram account even liked Thompson's post and left a heart emoji, while the King's Trust replied: "Such a pleasure to have you, Sam! See you at the Awards."
Interestingly, Palace's unusually playful tone wasn't limited to Thompson's gaffe.
Fellow reception attendee Jamie Laing and his pregnant wife Sophie Habboo also made headlines after recreating Meghan Markle's infamous "Baby Momma" dance video while inside the palace.
"They said we couldn't film in Buckingham Palace," Laing captioned the Instagram post.
But the Royal Family's official account unexpectedly replied: "We see you" with a wink emoji, while the King's Trust added: "All of our attendees are very well behaved."
The comment section exploded, with fans praising the unexpected banter.
"@theroyalfamily best response ever! This really made me laugh," one wrote.
Another added: "This is brilliant!" while a third user said: "In a world at times worrying and serious, this comment was so needed."
Thompson, Laing and Habboo later joined stars including George and Amal Clooney, Dame Joanna Lumley, Charlotte Tilbury and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley at the official 2025 King's Trust Awards, held at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Thursday night.
The event featured a red carpet, glam bot, and a live performance by pop icons The Sugababes.

Australian Survivor host ‘blindsided' over getting axed

Australian Survivor host Jonathan La Paglia has confirmed he has been let go from the show. La Paglia, who has hosted the Survivor revival since 2016, took to Instagram to confirm to fans that he had been 'blindsided' by the news. 'Australian Survivor has seen some of the most epic blindsides over the last 10 years, but this one might just be the craziest of them all…because it happened to me,' he began his lengthy post. 'I received a call from the Network thanking me for all my hard work and dedication to the show but for next season they are 'going in a different direction'. Ratings had dipped a bit recently and they wanted to do something drastic to shake things up. 'I wish I could say, 'Before we go to vote, tonight is a little different….no one's going home'. But I can't. None of that non-elim bullshit tonight! Someone IS going home. And with no idol in my back pocket, that someone is me,' he said. La Paglia called his time hosting the show 'one of the greatest adventures' of his career. 'I have loved and will dearly miss the immensely talented crew, all the crafty players and our loyal sassy audience. I'm a huge fan of this incredible game, always have been, always will be'. La Paglia has already filmed the newest season of the show, so the host change will not hit screens until next year. The network has also confirmed the news, with a spokesperson for the channel issuing a statement about the change. '10 can confirm that the upcoming season of Survivor: Australia V The World will be the last series hosted by the formidable Jonathan La Paglia (JLP),' a spokesperson said. 'JLP has brought a unique blend of authority, intelligence and empathy to his role as host of Australian Survivor over the last 10 years. Jonathan La Paglia's exit has been confirmed by both him and the 10 Network. Credit: Supplied / TheWest 'Acting as a referee and managing the intense pressure of the game while also acknowledging the human drama unfolding, JLP has been a compelling and memorable figure in the world of Survivor. 'We extend our sincere gratitude to JLP for his outstanding contribution over 10 years on Survivor, and we wish him continued success in his acting and presenting career'. It is understood that 10 will make an announcement soon about who will take over La Paglia's hosting duties, but rumours suggest a likely replacement may be former Australian Survivor champion David Genat. Genat is set to compete in La Paglia's final season, marking his third appearance on the show. The next season of the show is expected to debut on Australian televisions later this year.

Taylor Swift's ex Matty Healy seemingly drags pop star during Glastonbury set

Don't miss out on the headlines from Hook Ups & Break Ups. Followed categories will be added to My News. Taylor Swift's ex-boyfriend Matty Healy appeared to drag the pop star while performing at the Glastonbury Festival in England. The 1975 frontman took a moment to address the crowd at Worthy Farm in Somerset on Friday night, saying, 'What this moment is making me realise is that I probably am the best,' per a video posted on Variety's X account. 'I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation,' he continued while raising a glass of beer. 'The best, what do we say — a poet — ladies and gentlemen, is what I am.' Healy, 36, indirectly appeared to be talking about Swift's 2024 album, The Tortured Poets Department, which is believed to contain several brutal nods to the rocker. The star further bragged that he was a 'generational wordsmith.' A fan in the background of the clip joked that Healy was hinting at the pop superstar's album. Healy and Swift, 35, dated briefly for a month from May to June 2023, following the latter's split from Joe Alwyn. Healy is the lead singer of British band The 1975. Picture: Oli SCARFF/AFP During their short-lived romance, the duo were inseparable, with the crooner attending several of the Grammy winner's sold-out Eras Tour concerts. They were also often spotted in New York City, including at the Electric Lady recording studio. Page Six also learned that Swift and Healy were caught packing on the PDA at Casa Cipriani while out with Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley. When the duo split, an insider told Entertainment Tonight that it was due to incompatibility and scheduling issues. When Swift released TTPD in April 2024, fans were surprised to discover much of the searing album was about her relationship with Healy as opposed to Alwyn, the latter of whom she was with for six years. Swift is now in a happy relationship with Travis Kelce, whom she began dating in July 2023. Picture:It was rumoured that she wrote the album's title track, Guilty As Sin, Down Bad, Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) about Healy. A source told Us Weekly that Healy was 'blindsided' by the album. Swift moved on with boyfriend Travis Kelce over the summer of 2024, and they've been going strong ever since. Healy, meanwhile, got engaged to model Gabbriette Bechtel in June 2024. Dua Lipa celebrates five-night sold out stadium run with perfect pub act

Don't miss out on the headlines from Music Tours. Followed categories will be added to My News. Dua Lipa is ticking off life goals left, right and centre at the moment as the pop superstar celebrated five straight sold out stadium shows in England and Ireland. Having taken her Radical Optimism Tour to the UK, the 29-year-old songstress sold out Wembley Stadium twice, Liverpool's Anfield twice and Aviva Stadium in Dublin over the last week, continuing her wildly successful tour. And what better way to celebrate than with a well earned beverage. When in Ireland, you do as the Irish do and Dua took to social media as she downed a Guinness attempting to 'split the G'. '5 SOLD OUT STADIUMS IN A ROW!!!! ~ ONLY ONE WAY TO CELEBRATE!!!! BY SPLITTING THE G!!!!!!' she wrote on Instagram. While Aussies will be more accustomed to chugging the entire drink in one go like our late former Prime Minister Bob Hawke at the cricket, in Ireland, they take a more precision approach. 'Splitting the G' refers to drinking until the liquid perfectly cuts the G in Guinness on the glass in half, an act that Dua at the very least had an admirable attempt at. Although the origins of the trend are hazy at best, a Reddit thread claimed it came up in 2006 and was known as the Guinness Challenge, while others, including London pub Daffodil Mulligan claim that because no one can pinpoint the origin 'we're taking a small liberty in claiming it as an Irish tradition'. Whatever it is, the trend has become a viral sensation and a badge of honour for Guinness drinkers. There's even one pub owner in Galway who offers a free second pint to anyone who can 'split the G' on their first try on their first pint. Dua Lipa just won a bunch more followers! Photo: Instagram It's an admirable effort from the star. Photo: Instagram Close but no cigar to the sticklers. Photo: Instagram Dua shared her party snaps – and the Guinness was flowing. Photo: Instagram However, one controversy has arisen about how much of the beverage should be consumed, with contention over whether it should be drunk until halfway down the G — as Dua did — or whether it's splitting the top of the G from the bottom of the harp in the Guinness logo. But most Dua Lipa fans were too busy celebrating the star's achievement — and her iconic celebration — to worry about that. 'Cannot deal with how iconic you are having a lock-in, in a Dublin pub immediately after a sell out stadium gig,' one fan commented. Guinness US posted: 'Congrats and sláinte!' Sláinte is Gaelic for 'health' and is a popular toast. 'Immaculate vibes as always,' another posted. A fourth added: 'Splitting the G after 5 sold out stadiums is top aura moments.' Others felt they needed to pop the bubble. 'You sadly did not split the g Dua,' one commented. 'Well done on the shows, but you're miles off splitting the G … just saying …' another said. Pretty sure Dua still won. Photo byIt was party time for Dua and her crew. Photo: Instagram She had plenty to celebrate. Photo: Instagram Dua's tour has been going on since November last year, and she's due to hit Canada in September, followed by the major cities in the United States, and will finish up in Mexico City on December 5. The pop star already took Australia by storm with eight shows between Melbourne and Sydney back in March, where she made the most of her time Down Under. A-list star hits Aussie beach in tiny bikini VIEW GALLERY It's been an incredible year for Dua after she revealed she was engaged to British actor Callum Turner back in December. She only confirmed the rumour to British Vogue in June. 'Yes, we're engaged,' she told the magazine. 'It's very exciting.' The pair were first linked as a couple in January 2024 when they were spotted dancing the night away at his Masters of Air premiere afterparty in Los Angeles. Months later, they were photographed engaging in some PDA during a trip to New York City. Originally published as Dua Lipa celebrates five-night sold out stadium run with perfect pub act
