Grease, grit and glory: Prestige CarCare celebrates 15 years of passion, precision, and purpose

IT IS only 5pm, but the Prestige CarCare Flagship Automall along Jalan Chan Sow Lin is already buzzing with energy.
At 25,000sq ft, the state-of-the-art space is a gleaming cathedral for car lovers – and today, it's alive with anticipation.
Rows of luxury vehicles – Bentleys, Porsches, Mercedes-Benzes, Jaguars – stand proudly, hoods lifted, engines exposed.
Technicians move swiftly and methodically around them, ensuring each detail is in place.
Elsewhere, team members inflate balloons, tweak lighting, and rehearse the flow of guests for the evening's celebration.
In just two hours, Prestige CarCare will mark its 15th anniversary – a major milestone for a business that began humbly in 2010, as a 2,400sq ft workshop tucked away in Sungei Besi.
Founder and chief executive officer Toh Kean Wai is pacing quietly, visibly nervous. For him, tonight is more than just a celebration. It's the culmination of a dream rooted deep in memory.
From shed to showroom
As a boy, Toh watched his father – a lone mechanic – work tirelessly in a makeshift shed behind someone else's shoplot.
'Being a mechanic was considered a 3D job,' he says, referencing Malaysia's perception of dirty, dangerous, and difficult work.
'It wasn't something people looked up to, nor respected. I knew it was my mission to change that,' he confides.
From the very beginning, Toh set out to do things differently with Prestige CarCare.
Toh even travelled to Germany, China, and Japan — eager to learn about their cutting-edge equipment, technical expertise, and exacting standards.
In Toh's first workshop there were no dimly lit, cluttered, grease-smeared spaces, typical of traditional workshops.
In their place: bright, clean and organised service bays staffed by passionate professionals who treated every car like a prized possession — and every customer with respect.
Over time, those same high standards became the blueprint for all six Prestige CarCare outlets across the Klang Valley.
Toh set out to restore dignity to an overlooked trade, transforming workshops into spotless spaces built on excellence, respect, and service.
Today, Prestige CarCare handles everything auto — from major engine work and transmission fixes to tires, brakes, and routine oil changes — all done to exact manufacturer standards.
Their team knows cars inside and out, using high-tech diagnostics to spot and solve issues with ease in addition to premium detailing and cosmetic services for luxury cars.
And if their customers ever get stuck, they offer their 24/7 roadside help, post-service follow-ups, and even courtesy rides.
It comes as no surprise that Prestige CarCare has grown to become Malaysia's largest independent luxury car servicing company.
But the road hasn't been without bumps. There were tough times – from having to vacate one of their service centres on short notice to surviving the uncertainty of the MCO lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic.
'For us, challenges are opportunities in disguise,' Toh reflects. 'To last 15 years, you need courage, focus, and consistency.'
At the heart of Prestige CarCare's success is a simple philosophy: go the extra mile. And their 'zero downtime' policy is a perfect reflection of that.
Need your car serviced? They'll come to you. Cars are picked up and returned post-service. Customers get courtesy vehicles in the meantime, or a shuttle service if needed.
'We understand that time is money,' says Toh. 'So we've built our service around that belief.'
Driving into the future
That same spirit of innovation led to the launch of DirectBuy, Prestige CarCare's newest venture — an online platform where people can buy and sell pre-owned cars transparently and without hassle.
'We noticed many of our customers wanted to sell their cars but weren't getting fair prices from traditional dealers,' Toh reveals.
'When we checked the market rates, they were often much higher. That's when we knew — there was a gap we could fill.'
Toh believed DirectBuy could finally take the guesswork out of buying and selling used luxury cars a smoother, smarter alternative to the old-school dealer hustle.
'We help sellers to sell at a better price. And we help buyers to buy at a good price,' he adds.
DirectBuy takes a fresh approach. Cars are thoroughly inspected, with a detailed report generated covering everything from dents and scratches to verified mileage.
A 55-point mechanical check – powered by Prestige's deep technical background – ensures buyers know exactly what they're getting.
'I believe we're the first to offer this kind of platform with this level of transparency,' says Toh. 'Other dealers still rely on outdated, wait-and-see methods. We're changing that.'
Back at the Automall, the final touches are being placed. The team is ready. Guests will soon begin arriving. Toh pauses for a moment, taking it all in.
'I think my late father would have been very touched to see this,' he says quietly.

MALAYSIA has a strong exporting power for medical devices. Unlike pharmaceuticals, Malaysia is largely a net exporter of medical devices. These are mainly consumables, diagnostics equipment and patient aids. Imports, meanwhile, shown a steady growth, a signal that Malaysia's healthcare demand for advanced medical technologies and equipment continue to grow. Malaysia consistently maintains a significant trade surplus in medical devices, highlighting the medical device sector as a key contributor to Malaysia's overall trade balance. While gloves constituted a large portion of the total medical device exports, non-glove exports overtook the total export for 2022 onwards. This shift is crucial as it indicates that Malaysia's efforts to diversify its medical device manufacturing base beyond gloves are bearing fruit. The significant growth in non-glove exports means the industry is becoming more resilient and less dependent on a single product category. This aligns with national goals of strengthening innovation capacity and moving up the value chain. As of quarter one of 2025, the total investment value in medical devices reached RM26.3 mil, spread across about 180 projects. Foreign investments had a slight upper hand in the medical devices' investment landscape, notably during post-Covid. This may suggest that, as global supply chains had normalized, foreign companies re-engaged with investment plans in Malaysia. The swings between DDI and FDI dominance also reflects specific government incentives in healthcare investments, promising global economic conditions for the subsector, and strategic shifts by both local and international players. On average, FDI dominated at 52.2% of the total investments. AI-based equipment and devices are expected to see a surge in demand, with market size projected to grow up to USD220 mil by 2030, at a very high five year compounded annual growth rate of 45.4%. The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) had taken significant steps to include AI technology under its medical devices' regulations. The AI must be a medical device that uses machine learning (ML), in part or in whole, to achieve its intended medical purpose. The AI is expected to be under the jurisdiction of Section 2 of the Medical Device Act 2012 (Act 737). We believe this update to the regulatory framework is timely, aligning with the government's National Health Missions, Healthcare White Paper and NIMP 2030, as well the rapid growth in AI utilization in everyday life. Other drivers include: (i) Increasing healthcare data volume. (ii) Shortage of skilled healthcare professionals. (iii) Growing demand for cost reduction and operational efficiencies. (iv) Increased focus on personalized and preventive healthcare. While traditional clinical data remains paramount, there is a clear and accelerating trend in integration between data and technology, aiming towards incorporating real-world data from remote care, advanced 'omics' technologies for personalized insights, and external factors that shape an individual's health. This multi-faceted approach to data collection and analysis is crucial for developing more proactive, preventive, and personalized model. The ability to collect, integrate, and analyse these diverse data streams is paving the way for precision health, predictive analytics and more. BUDAPEST: Lewis Hamilton received support from his Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur on Sunday just hours after the Briton cut a dejected figure following a lacklustre drive to 12th place in the Hungarian Grand Prix. While team-mate Charles Leclerc proved unable to convert Ferrari's first pole position of the season into victory due to unexplained mechanical problems during the race, seven-time champion Hamilton was battling to escape midfield and finished where he started. As on Saturday, when he was dumped out of Q2 and appeared miserable, claiming he was "completely useless" and saying the team should "bring in another driver", Hamilton seemed utterly deflated. To most observers, it appeared as if the pressures of living up to the hype of his spectacular marquee move from Mercedes, where he won six titles, and adjusting to the culture, car and expectations at Ferrari were overwhelming him. At 40, talk of imminent retirement circled around him. But Vasseur was swift to defend Hamilton, who has always been prone to impulsive heart-on-sleeve reactions. "I don't need to motivate him," said Vasseur. "Honestly, he's frustrated, but not demotivated. "He's demanding, but I think it's also why he's (a) seven-time world champion. I can perfectly understand this situation. "Sometimes, you are making comments on what the driver is saying (in) the car, but if you put the microphone on some other sportsmen, in football and so on, I'm not sure that it would be much better. "Sometimes, just after the race or just after qualifying, you are very disappointed and the first reaction is harsh. I can understand the frustration, but we are all frustrated." Vasseur added Hamilton's weekend appeared worse than it really was because of the tight and competitive times that led him to miss out on reaching Q3 on Saturday. "For sure, when you are a seven-time world champion, your team-mate is on pole position and you are out in Q2, it's a tough situation," he said. "But overall, we can also have a deep look that he was in front of Charles in Q1 and with the first set that he was one-tenth off in Q2. We were not far away from having the two cars out in Q2. "I can understand the frustration from Lewis. That's normal and he will come back. He was stuck in a DRS train, but when he was alone, the pace was good. "I'm sure that he will be back and he will perform." Fourth-placed Leclerc backed his team-mate. "At the end, we are one team and as much as I want to finish in front of Lewis, I want both of us to be successful and for Ferrari to be successful, and obviously this weekend has been a tough one for Lewis," Leclerc said. "But I have no doubt that it's a one-off and I'm sure the second part of the season will be a lot more positive." Hamilton, sixth in the drivers' standings, but without a podium for Ferrari this year, said he was looking forward to a much-needed "break from work" during F1's August holiday before the Dutch Grand Prix on the final weekend of this month.--AFP

MUCH like Cheers, the 90's sitcom bar 'where everybody knows your name', diners at a Plaza Damas 3 cafe can expect a warm welcome, with regulars being greeted by name by its friendly chef-owner. At the heart of Real Sweet Treats cafe is Renee Soliano Tan, a chef by training who has over 10 years of baking experience under her belt. Real Sweet Treats cafe in Plaza Damas 3 saw its business improve after introducing a hot menu with savoury options. She started Real Sweet Treats as a side hustle at the age of 16. Baking was also how she survived during the Covid-19 pandemic, as her job was put on hold during that period, explained Tan. At the heart of Real Sweet Treats is Tan, who started the business at the age of 16. — Photos: JAROD LIM/The Star 'I ran a home-based baking business for two years during the pandemic and participated in pop-up bazaars when movement restrictions were eased, before venturing to open my own cafe in April 2023.' Tan said her business' name pays homage to the RST acronym she shares with her four siblings and also reflects her passion for baking, although she admitted that it also gives people the impression that her pastries are 'really sweet'. 'I trained in culinary arts and was given an opportunity to work as a pastry chef at The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur. 'My mentors trained me to craft pastries quickly, while ensuring they looked appealing and tasted nice,' said Tan, adding that she still holds to the 'do it fast, do it nice' motto. The cafe typically offers 20 types of baked goods daily, including at least one type of brownie, tart and banana cake, all of which are Real Sweet Treats' signature items. Blue Nana topped with banana compote, chantilly cream and fresh blueberries is the cafe's signature buttermilk waffle option. The menu, she said, changes weekly, as she crafts the pastries based on what she feels like eating. It can be Earl Grey tea, or a pastry item with seasonal ingredients like South Korean strawberries, she added. 'I make an effort to use good quality ingredients in my pastries, some of which are imported. 'If there are customers who question my price point, I try to educate them on what it takes to craft quality baked goods.' The cafe's daily lineup of pastries offers something for everyone with the RST Banana Cake, Orange Flourless Cake and Maple Pecan Carrot Cake being our personal favourites. Emerald Pesto Pasta features sweet basil, garlic, roasted almonds and beef bacon. Other items spotted included Strawberry Vanilla Tart, Blueberry Lemon Tart, Rainbow Cheesecake, Vanilla Cloud Cake, Raspberry Lemon Meringue, Strawberry Panna Cotta, Blueberry Earl Grey Loaf and tiramisu (alcohol-free). For customers who want an introduction to its pastries, Real Sweet Treats has a monthly tasting box featuring some of its bestsellers and seasonal goodies. One box is priced at RM85 via pre-order and RM90 via walk-in. The first year of running a cafe was challenging, as Tan had to deal with multiple challenges on top of handling payroll, purchasing and social media posts. 'The business improved when I introduced a hot menu with savoury options. Strawberry Vanilla Tart with juicy South Korean strawberries is a signature item. 'About 70% of dine-in customers opt for the hot menu.' 'Thanks to my strict culinary training, I have separate chillers and sinks for my sweet and savoury items to prevent cross contamination.' Tan is assisted by a team that includes cafe partner Bryan Ong, who cooks the hot food. The cafe's bestselling hot meals include Cozy Meal (grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough bread, served with house-made roasted tomato soup), Orchard Chicken (a blend of Granny Smith apples, citrus-infused mayo and shredded chicken served on sourdough bread), Emerald Pesto Pasta (a dish featuring a blend of flavours and textures with sweet basil, garlic, roasted almonds and beef bacon), and Sausages and Eggs. Silky, smooth Mango Panna Cotta. 'We use three types of cheese in the Cozy Meal – Gouda, American cheddar and mozzarella,' she said. 'It became so popular that we introduced half portions for customers who couldn't manage a full plate. 'The sausages used in our hot meals are Italian herbed chicken sausages provided by a supplier that also sends them to hotels,' said Tan, adding the cafe works with halal-certified suppliers and ingredients. Besides toast, pasta, all-day breakfast and salads, the cafe also offers made-to-order buttermilk waffles, with Blue Nana topped with banana compote, chantilly cream and fresh blueberries as its signature option.
