IonQ and Kipu Quantum announce the successful solution of the most complex known protein folding problem ever executed on a quantum computer
This joint effort is the largest known quantum computation of its kind to-date, and demonstrates the synergy between Kipu's innovative algorithmic framework and IonQ's state-of-the-art hardware.
In their latest study, the teams solved:
All instances were executed on IonQ's Forte generation systems using Kipu Quantum's flagship BF-DCQO (Bias-Field Digitized Counterdiabatic Quantum Optimization) algorithm. The results advance the frontier of near-term quantum computing and have the potential to make a large impact on biology and drug development.
BF-DCQO provides a non-variational, iterative method that is both accurate and resource-efficient. This algorithm can achieve better solutions with fewer quantum operations in each subsequent iteration. This is especially critical for protein folding, where several long-range interactions are present, making the all-to-all connectivity of IonQ's trapped ion systems an important asset.
'Connectivity between qubits in quantum computing impacts efficiency and accuracy. Having all-to-all connectivity means faster time to solution, with higher quality results, and is a unique characteristic of trapped-ion systems. Combining that with Kipu's unique quantum algorithms results in unparalleled performance with minimal resources, a sine qua non path to quantum advantage with IonQ's next-generation system,' said Prof. Enrique Solano, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Kipu Quantum. 'This collaboration is not only breaking performance records, but is also positioning us to actively pursue quantum advantage using trapped-ion technologies with IonQ for a wide class of industry use cases.'
'Our collaboration with Kipu Quantum has delivered breakthroughs in both speed and quality that sets a new standard for what's possible in quantum computing today,' said Ariel Braunstein, SVP of Product at IonQ. 'This collaboration demonstrates the value of every part of IonQ's quantum computing stack – from the quality of our qubits and how they are connected, to our compiler and operating system to how error mitigation techniques are applied. Kipu's capabilities complement IonQ's cutting-edge systems perfectly and this collaboration is only the first step in our mutual pursuit of near-term commercial value for customers across multiple industries.'
IonQ and Kipu Quantum will extend their collaboration with early access to IonQ's upcoming 64-qubit and 256-qubit chips, unlocking the potential to address even larger, industrially relevant challenges. Both companies are exploring additional use cases capable of delivering quantum-advantage in the near term across drug discovery, logistics, and material design.

Implenia acquires $251.9m construction orders in Switzerland and Germany

Construction and real-estate service provider Implenia has secured a range of new building construction contracts in Switzerland and Germany, together valued at around SFr200m ($251.9m). The contracts include building a new data centre, a hotel rebuild, and a residential development. The company has entered a core and shell contract with sustainable digital infrastructure provider, STACK Infrastructure, to construct a new data centre in Beringen. This marks the eighth such project for Implenia in Switzerland since 2020. This facility will be built to the latest building information modelling (BIM) standards, enabling paper-free operations through the use of 3D models on BIM stations. The completion of the data centre is projected for 2027. In Gstaad, Switzerland, Grand Hotel Park SA has commissioned Implenia to undertake the rebuilding and renovation of the historic Grand Hotel Park, which opened in 1910. As the general contractor, Implenia is responsible for the core and shell construction and coordination of carpentry work. The project aims for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method certification and is utilising 'lean construction' methods. The hotel, managed by Squircle Capital, began construction in October 2024 and is expected to reopen as The Park Gstaad, A Four Seasons Hotel, in time for the 2026-27 winter season. Implenia has also been selected by real-estate company Mobimo as the total contractor for the Nordbau conversion and extension project in Aarau, Switzerland. The project, which is part of the Aeschbach quarter development, will preserve parts of the old concrete structure for sustainability. The mixed-use building will offer 122 rental apartments, 200m² of commercial space, and will meet the Minergie-ECO standard. All services, from demolition to turnkey interior fittings, will be provided by Implenia, with the project handover scheduled for mid-2028. In Germany, Implenia has acquired contracts for various projects, including a school and shopping centre in Heilbronn, a residential complex in Sindelfingen, and a specialist shopping centre near Bamberg. Additionally, the company is renovating a residential building in Halle and rebuilding a logistics hall for Lufthansa Aviation Training in Neufahrn. Last month, Implenia signed an early contractor involvement contract with SKB for the construction of the first underground section of a deep repository for radioactive waste in Sweden. Neanderthals extracted animal fat in advanced food prep process 125,000 years ago: report

Neanderthals living 125,000 years ago in what is now modern-day Germany may have extracted and eaten fat from animal bones through an organized food preparation process that scientists describe as a 'fat factory.' While excavating the site of a former lake landscape called Neumark-Nord, archaeologists discovered thousands of bones from at least 172 large mammals, along with flint artifacts. The bones, which date back to an interglacial period in which Neanderthals lived, were from animals like red deer and horses, according to a study published on July 2 in Science Advances. While many of the bones that contained less bone marrow were spread out across the archaeological site, researchers observed that many of the marrow-rich bones were located in clusters — sites they call 'fat factories.' Researchers believe our extinct ancestors used tools to smash the bones into small fragments and then boiled them for hours. The grease, which then floated to the surface of the water, could be skimmed off the top and eaten — providing a calorie-dense food source for the archaic people. Prior to this, evidence of the practice had only dated back to 28,000 years ago, according to the research. "Neanderthals were clearly managing resources with precision — planning hunts, transporting carcasses, and rendering fat in a task-specific area," Dr. Lutz Kindler, the study's first author, said. "They understood both the nutritional value of fat and how to access it efficiently — most likely involving caching carcass parts at places in the landscape for later transport to and use at the grease rendering site. Fat was a "life-sustaining" resource for Neanderthals, especially during the winter and spring seasons when carbohydrates were scarce. Their diets consisted largely of animal protein, and consuming lots of protein without other nutrients could lead to a sometimes deadly condition called protein poisoning, the research noted. "The sheer size and extraordinary preservation of the Neumark-Nord site complex gives us a unique chance to study how Neanderthals impacted their environment, both animal and plant life," Dr. Fulco Scherjon, data manager and computer scientist on the project, said. "That's incredibly rare for a site this old—and it opens exciting new possibilities for future research." In recent years, scientists have also discovered that Neanderthals went diving for seashells that they could chip with stone hammers into thin and sharp cutting edges. Similarly, another study suggested Neanderthals may have buried their dead with flowers. Researchers Lutz Kindler and Wil Roebroeks did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

It Might Not Be A Great Idea To Buy UMS Integration Limited (SGX:558) For Its Next Dividend

Some investors rely on dividends for growing their wealth, and if you're one of those dividend sleuths, you might be intrigued to know that UMS Integration Limited (SGX:558) is about to go ex-dividend in just 4 days. The ex-dividend date generally occurs two days before the record date, which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is important because any transaction on a stock needs to have been settled before the record date in order to be eligible for a dividend. Accordingly, UMS Integration investors that purchase the stock on or after the 9th of July will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 24th of July. The company's upcoming dividend is S$0.01 a share, following on from the last 12 months, when the company distributed a total of S$0.052 per share to shareholders. Last year's total dividend payments show that UMS Integration has a trailing yield of 3.9% on the current share price of S$1.34. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! So we need to check whether the dividend payments are covered, and if earnings are growing. This technology could replace computers: discover the 20 stocks are working to make quantum computing a reality. Dividends are typically paid from company earnings. If a company pays more in dividends than it earned in profit, then the dividend could be unsustainable. It paid out 87% of its earnings as dividends last year, which is not unreasonable, but limits reinvestment in the business and leaves the dividend vulnerable to a business downturn. We'd be worried about the risk of a drop in earnings. That said, even highly profitable companies sometimes might not generate enough cash to pay the dividend, which is why we should always check if the dividend is covered by cash flow. Over the past year it paid out 185% of its free cash flow as dividends, which is uncomfortably high. It's hard to consistently pay out more cash than you generate without either borrowing or using company cash, so we'd wonder how the company justifies this payout level. While UMS Integration's dividends were covered by the company's reported profits, cash is somewhat more important, so it's not great to see that the company didn't generate enough cash to pay its dividend. Were this to happen repeatedly, this would be a risk to UMS Integration's ability to maintain its dividend. View our latest analysis for UMS Integration Click here to see the company's payout ratio, plus analyst estimates of its future dividends. Stocks in companies that generate sustainable earnings growth often make the best dividend prospects, as it is easier to lift the dividend when earnings are rising. If earnings decline and the company is forced to cut its dividend, investors could watch the value of their investment go up in smoke. This is why it's a relief to see UMS Integration earnings per share are up 2.7% per annum over the last five years. Earnings have been growing somewhat, but we're concerned dividend payments consumed most of the company's cash flow over the past year. Another key way to measure a company's dividend prospects is by measuring its historical rate of dividend growth. Since the start of our data, 10 years ago, UMS Integration has lifted its dividend by approximately 3.1% a year on average. It's encouraging to see the company lifting dividends while earnings are growing, suggesting at least some corporate interest in rewarding shareholders. From a dividend perspective, should investors buy or avoid UMS Integration? Earnings per share have grown somewhat, although UMS Integration paid out over half its profits and the dividend was not well covered by free cash flow. It's not an attractive combination from a dividend perspective, and we're inclined to pass on this one for the time being. Having said that, if you're looking at this stock without much concern for the dividend, you should still be familiar of the risks involved with UMS Integration. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for UMS Integration you should know about. A common investing mistake is buying the first interesting stock you see.
