James Trafford to Newcastle United edges closer as Burnley transfer confirmed
Newcastle United's chances of landing Burnley stopper James Trafford look to have increased after the Premier League new boys pounced to sign a potential replacement between the sticks. The Clarets have confirmed the arrival of promising German goalkeeper, Max Weiss, from Karlsuher in a £4.3m deal. Advertisement Weiss arrives after featuring in all 34 matches for his current club in the 2. Bundesliga last term. Scott Parker has made him the latest Turf Moor signing as the former Newcastle midfielder plots how to keep Burnley in the top flight in the upcoming campaign. 'I'm really excited. It's a really cool club and it feels amazing to be here,' Weiss told the club's YouTube channel. 'I talked with my manager, I talked with Kersten [goalkeeping coach Kersten Kuhl], we had a lot of talks. It was amazing contact and that was the start of how the move came about." Back then, the Magpies were hamstrung by Profit and Sustainability Rules, before Odysseas Vlachodimos joined from Nottingham Forest to all but end United's search for additional goalkeeping reinforcements. This time around, Newcastle have funds at their disposal and have not changed their opinion of Trafford. If anything, the goalkeeper's stock has only skyrocketed after a historic season in the Championship. Burnley, fresh from their promotion, have understandably increased their asking price for Trafford, who was available for just £20m this time last year. Now, it is understood a fee of around £35m is the minimum Newcastle will need to spend on the England international. Discussing last summer's failed Newcastle move, Trafford recently told Ben Foster's 'Fozcast': "The club that I was close to going, it was a good fit for me. It was brilliant for me and I really believed in it. Advertisement 'I wanted to move, not just because I didn't want to play in the Championship, I had no shame playing in the Championship. I have no ego to think I'm better than the Championship. You only prove something by performing and showing people. You can say whatever you want but unless you perform. "It was just when an opportunity and a situation you think suits you can happen, you should take it and you should try and go for it, so I wanted to move. It was close but it didn't end up happening." Here at ChronicleLive, we are dedicated to bringing you the best Newcastle United coverage and analysis. Syrian teenager charged over plot against Taylor Swift concerts
German prosecutors said on Friday they had filed charges against a Syrian youth and alleged ISIS supporter linked to a 2024 attack plot on a Vienna concert by US pop megastar Taylor Swift. The suspect, named only as Mohammad A., was accused of supporting a foreign terrorist organisation and preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state, federal prosecutors said. He had, as a juvenile, started following ISIS ideology from April last year and had from July been in contact with a young adult from Austria who was planning a bomb attack at one of Swift's concerts, they said. "The accused assisted the young adult in his preparations by, among other things, translating bomb-making instructions from Arabic and establishing contact with an ISIS member abroad via the internet," federal prosecutors said in a statement. "The accused also provided the young adult with a template for the oath of allegiance to ISIS, which the young adult used to join the organisation." Police first took Mohammad A. into custody last September in the eastern German city of Frankfurt an der Oder, where the then 15-year-old went to school, but later released him. The federal prosecutors office in the western city of Karlsruhe said on Friday the charges were laid on June 17 in a Berlin higher regional court, which will now decide on their admissibility. Three shows in Vienna that were part of Swift's record-breaking Eras tour were cancelled last summer after authorities warned of a terror plot by ISIS sympathisers. Police detained three suspects, including a 19-year-old Austrian with North Macedonian roots, over the alleged attack threat, with the US saying it had shared intelligence to assist in the investigation. Swift later wrote on Instagram that "the reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many had planned on coming to those shows".

'Very brave' Weiss excited about Premier League football
New Burnley goalkeeper Max Weiss is ready to stake his claim for the number one spot as the future of current incumbent James Trafford remains 21-year-old joined from Karlsruher on a four-year deal earlier this week for a reported fee of five million euros, external (£4.3m). He played every league game for the Bundesliga.2 side last season, helping them finish eighth, and has represented Germany from under-18 level through to the to the club's website Weiss said: "I think I'm a very brave goalkeeper and I try to give everything I have on the pitch so they can expect every time one hundred per cent and that I go into every ball that flies near to me."He said Burnley's defensive record last season - 16 goals and 30 clean sheets in the Championship - was "amazing" and that he is looking forward to joining the goalkeeping department. He said: "It's really exciting. I can learn from everybody. I think we will have good chemistry."It was a dream for me to play in England and in the Premier League so it's a dream come true."Trafford has been strongly linked with Newcastle United for some weeks but for now Weiss joins him as one of four goalkeepers at Turf Moor, the others being Vaclav Hladky and Etienne Green.

IonQ and Kipu Quantum Break New Performance Records For Protein Folding And Optimization Problems
KARLSRUHE, Germany & COLLEGE PARK, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jun 19, 2025-- Kipu Quantum, a leader in application and hardware-specific quantum computing solutions, and IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), a leading commercial quantum computing and networking company, proudly announced a record achievement: the successful solution of the most complex known protein folding problem ever executed on a quantum computer. This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: IonQ and Kipu Quantum announce the successful solution of the most complex known protein folding problem ever executed on a quantum computer This joint effort is the largest known quantum computation of its kind to-date, and demonstrates the synergy between Kipu's innovative algorithmic framework and IonQ's state-of-the-art hardware. In their latest study, the teams solved: All instances were executed on IonQ's Forte generation systems using Kipu Quantum's flagship BF-DCQO (Bias-Field Digitized Counterdiabatic Quantum Optimization) algorithm. The results advance the frontier of near-term quantum computing and have the potential to make a large impact on biology and drug development. BF-DCQO provides a non-variational, iterative method that is both accurate and resource-efficient. This algorithm can achieve better solutions with fewer quantum operations in each subsequent iteration. This is especially critical for protein folding, where several long-range interactions are present, making the all-to-all connectivity of IonQ's trapped ion systems an important asset. 'Connectivity between qubits in quantum computing impacts efficiency and accuracy. Having all-to-all connectivity means faster time to solution, with higher quality results, and is a unique characteristic of trapped-ion systems. Combining that with Kipu's unique quantum algorithms results in unparalleled performance with minimal resources, a sine qua non path to quantum advantage with IonQ's next-generation system,' said Prof. Enrique Solano, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Kipu Quantum. 'This collaboration is not only breaking performance records, but is also positioning us to actively pursue quantum advantage using trapped-ion technologies with IonQ for a wide class of industry use cases.' 'Our collaboration with Kipu Quantum has delivered breakthroughs in both speed and quality that sets a new standard for what's possible in quantum computing today,' said Ariel Braunstein, SVP of Product at IonQ. 'This collaboration demonstrates the value of every part of IonQ's quantum computing stack – from the quality of our qubits and how they are connected, to our compiler and operating system to how error mitigation techniques are applied. Kipu's capabilities complement IonQ's cutting-edge systems perfectly and this collaboration is only the first step in our mutual pursuit of near-term commercial value for customers across multiple industries.' IonQ and Kipu Quantum will extend their collaboration with early access to IonQ's upcoming 64-qubit and 256-qubit chips, unlocking the potential to address even larger, industrially relevant challenges. Both companies are exploring additional use cases capable of delivering quantum-advantage in the near term across drug discovery, logistics, and material design.
