Kmart sends nostalgic shoppers racing over $29 gadget: 'OMG I need it NOW'

Daily Mail3 days ago
Shoppers are racing to Kmart Australia stores to get their hands on a mini version of a retro item that's made an unexpected comeback.
Alongside a resurgent interest in all things Y2K fashion and style, early 2000s inspired digital camera have suddenly become trendy again.
This is despite most people already having a digital camera available at their fingertips via their smartphone.
Kmart have jumped on board the trend by offering a range of standalone digital cameras.
But the latest addition to their range - a cute key-chain sized Mini Digital Camera, priced at only $29 - has quickly earned legions of fans.
The mass retailer released a TikTok video this week that showcased the camera being clipped onto a set of keys, emphasising its petite size.
But despite its adorable stature, the video also demonstrated that it is a 'real' functioning digital camera with surprisingly good picture quality - and video recording capability to boot.
The mass budget retailer's latest social media video is captioned: 'Yes, it's a real camera and yes, we will be bringing it everywhere with us these school holidays'.
Within a day of being released, the TikTok video amassed over 400,000 views and 20,000 likes.
Kmart fans couldn't contain their excitement about the mini-sized version of the retro item.
'OMG THATS SO CUTE,' exclaimed one shopper.
'I NEED THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!' excitedly declared another.
'I bought it when it just landed I love it! Can't stop using it,' another happy customer added.
The online product description explains that the camera has a 'compact design and user-friendly features'.
It also suggests the tiny device is 'ideal for travel, vlogging or spontaneous everyday snapshots'.
The dimensions of the miniature gadget are 4.24cm (L) x 2.92cm (H) - and the screen display size is 2.43cm.
The compact camera also comes with a USB charging and data cable, keychain, lanyard and 32GB memory card.
It also has an built-in flash for night time photographers, as well as six filter options to jazz up images.
But among the hundreds of replies to the recent viral video were confused remarks about 'why' demand for digital camera existed given that most people own smartphones.
'Other than for kids who don't have phones… why? We have camera's with us every day,' questioned one person.
To this, a commenter offered a simple one-word explanation: 'Nostalgia'.
Another added: 'Digital cameras are making a short comeback with the youth, just like bad fashion.'
A third person confirmed that even though we've all 'got cameras in our pockets' they were certain 'plenty' of people are 'going to want' this cute buy.
The comments were also filled with questions from curious shoppers about some of the functionality aspects of the camera.
In reply to queries about the 'quality' of the pictures taken on the camera, one person confirmed that it 'is actually really good'.
Others asked whether the device could capture videos, to which Kmart's own social media account confirmed that the camera had the capability to record videos.
However those who haven't previously owned digital cameras were stumped as to how images taken on the camera could later be transferred to a phone or laptop.
Some helpful replies explained that the camera's SD memory card could be inserted directly into some laptops to extract the images, or that you could transfer the files via the provided USB data and cable cord.
Photos taken on the camera can also be printed out by placing the memory card into a photo printing machine – like the ones found in-store at Kmart.
A recent statistic from eBay Australia revealed that searches for digital cameras have surged more than 48 per cent in the past year alone, with iconic 2000s-inspired models particularly in high demand.

Neighbours cast film emotional final scenes on Ramsay Street revival as 40-year soap ends with 'hope for future possibilities'

As four decades of Neighbours came to an end on Friday, veteran stars Annie Jones and Stefan Dennis showed support for their fellow cast members in an emotional final day on set. The actress, 55, first appeared on the beloved soap in 1986 as Jane Harris, aka Plain Jane Superbrain, and was on hand this week to offer a supportive shoulder. She was seen wrapping her arm around her fellow stars as they came together to mark the end of an era at Melbourne 's Nunawading studios. Annie chose to step away from the spotlight in 1989 to look after her late mother, Elizabeth, who battled Alzheimer's disease and passed away in 2016. She later reprised her role in 2018 and has been a regular fixture on the show ever since. Annie was seen wrapping her arm around her fellow stars as they came together to mark the end of an era at Melbourne 's Nunawading studios Soap veteran Stefan, 66, who has played the character of Paul Robinson on the series for four decades, was also seen on set for the final scenes of the concluding episode. The actor, who was part of the original Neighbours cast when it debuted in 1985, left the show in 1992 but returned in 2004. He clutched buckets of Chupa Chups lollipops for his castmates. 'I never thought a single show would give me the greatest adventures of my career, spanning 40 years,' Stefan said in a statement released by Prime Video. 'Without 'Neighbours' I would not have met the people, been to the places and lived the experiences of a lifetime.' Other members of the crew were seen consoling one another in a group hug. Then, the entire cast gathered together at the end of the day for a group photo. For decades, Neighbours has chronicled the ups and downs of Melbourne's fictional Erinsborough, and the series will air its last episodes in December, bringing Amazon's two-year revival to a close. In total, the streamer has added a respectable 460 episodes to the show's already staggering 9,000-episode legacy. Executive producer Jason Herbison got a bit misty-eyed over the statistic, saying: 'Neighbours is a special show and it's been a privilege to make the recent seasons for our loyal viewers around the world. 'We have added 460 episodes to our legacy of over 9,000 episodes, something we all feel proud of.' He added: 'Once again, we will be resting the residents of Ramsay Street on a hopeful note, with some tantalising possibilities for a future chapter.' Veteran star Alan Fletcher, aka Dr Karl Kennedy, called the set his 'happy place', praising the 'creative freedom and enthusiasm amongst the whole team.' Jackie Woodburne, who has starred as Susan Kennedy for three decades, said, 'It is impossible to measure the gratitude I feel for the gift of 30 years of Neighbours. 'We are the best version of "family". It has been a wild ride into a happy life. Wouldn't change it for quids!' Even the newer faces on Ramsay Street were gutted to say goodbye. Matt Wilson (Aaron Brennan) called the show 'a real beacon of hope,' while Ben Jackson (Max Ramsay) described his time on set as 'the greatest gift of my life.' In the UK, Neighbours experienced consistent Top 10 rankings under Amazon's stewardship and earned a 2024 Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Daytime Series. Back in 2022, the beloved soap got the axe after 37 seasons, only to be rescued for the revival. Now, it's curtains for good. As cast member Naomi Rukavina (Remi Varga-Murphy) beautifully put it: 'It's a special thing to be part of a national icon. 'Neighbours is nothing like I had imagined. It has been blessing on blessing for me. Fulfilling, stabilising, and heart-filling. Long live the icon,' she said. According to Metro UK, sets have already begun to be dismantled at the production base on the outskirts of Melbourne. The studio site, which was sold to property redevelopers several years ago but is on a long lease to programme-makers Fremantle Media, is expected to be reused for other productions in the future.

JoJo Siwa addresses pregnancy rumours amid her budding romance with Chris Hughes

JoJo Siwa has addressed rumours she could be pregnant after one of her videos went viral on TikTok. The Dance Moms alum, 22, is in a relationship with Chris Hughes, after they met on Celebrity Big Brother in April. On Wednesday, she asked her fans to play the game '2 truths & a lie' - before she read out three statements, one being a lie and the other two being truthful. She then said: '1. I've never smoked a [cigarette] 2. I'm pregnant 3. This song comes out on Spotify Friday.' JoJo was playing into online speculation that she could be expecting after Chris gently rubbed his finger over her tummy during a recent TikTok video. Fans wrote things like, 'Pregnancy craving???' as she tucked into a plate of red food. Another wrote: 'When the pregnancy craving is red 40,' and another penned, 'r u pregnant?' After JoJo shared the 'two truths and a lie' video, social media users jumped to the comments to choose which option was the lie, while others applauded JoJo for nonchalantly poking fun at the pregnancy speculation. A fan typed, 'Everyone's saying it's 1 or 3, meaning everyone thinks she's pregnant,' and another added, 'You Gonna be a Dance mom.' 'Not you addressing the pregnancy rumors in the most hilarious fashion,' one shared, and another penned, 'Joelle not u egging on the pregnant rumors. Youre too funny.' Others replied to the comment and said, 'She's brilliant smiling her way through life is the key' and 'She's doing it in style and hitting the silly rumors out of the park.' On TikTok, a number of videos have since been posted as fans shared their personal reaction to the speculation as well. It comes as her cover of Bette Davis Eyes was released on Friday after a social media clip of her singing it at a show went viral. JoJo decided to record a studio version of the track for fans, and said: 'Performing Bette Davis Eyes live in London was one of the most thrilling moments on stage. 'The crowd's reaction was so amazing, I knew I had to release it as a single. The song is a classic, full of confidence and mystery, and I wanted to bring my own interpretation to it while honoring the original. I can't wait for my fans to experience it!' Siwa has previously opened up about her plans for parenthood in the future during an interview with Cosmopolitan last year. A fan typed, 'Everyone's saying it's 1 or 3, meaning everyone thinks she's pregnant,' and another added, 'You Gonna be a Dance mom' 'Not you addressing the pregnancy rumors in the most hilarious fashion,' one shared, and another penned, 'Joelle not u egging on the pregnant rumors. You're too funny' She explained at the time that she wanted to have three babies at the same time with different surrogates. 'Because I'm gay and I have to plan a pregnancy much different than a straight person, I actually want to take three eggs, fertilize three eggs, and have three surrogates,' JoJo stated. 'So technically, they'll all be [from] the same batch but they would all be born separately. Then maybe their little birthdays will land on different days and they can be like triplets, but like, not.' The dancer than said to the outlet that her three babies will 'be here' in three years 'whether you like it or not.' The performer has been promoting her new cover of the Kim Carnes song Bette Davis Eyes on Instagram - which dropped on Thursday. Last month, JoJo set the record straight on her sexuality amid her budding romance with Love Island star Chris Hughes while talking to E! News. It was confirmed in June that the singer and TV personality are dating after first crossing paths on Celebrity Big Brother U.K. a few months earlier in April. Siwa first came out as part of the LGBTQ+ community in 2021 - and initially identified as pansexual before coming out as lesbian. However, JoJo expressed to the outlet that she is queer. 'I think the most beautiful term now is queer. I think queer is an umbrella of, "Look, I'm just me,"' the performer stated. 'And I think the most beautiful thing about the LGBTQIA community is love. And that goes both ways.' Siwa continued, 'There's loads of beautiful, different sexualities. Sexuality and queerness is a lovely rainbow that has all different places, and it also has places on this rainbow that we don't even know exist yet.' The star brushed aside criticism and explained, 'I feel so in the right position for myself. I feel so content with my happiness. 'I feel so relaxed and at ease with where I'm at. I feel so happy and peaceful that the love that I feel is so real. You can't really help who you fall in love with.' JoJo also briefly talked about her new beau Chris and revealed that she has 'never 'second guessed' what she feels for the reality star. 'Therefore, I've never second guessed my happiness, I've never second guessed what I'm feeling. And I think that's the most beautiful thing. When I think about him, I'm full of pure joy. When I speak about him, I'm full of pure joy.' Back in April, the dancer first crossed paths with Hughes on Celebrity Big Brother - where they first developed a close friendship. But their bond caused viewers to speculate that there was more between them and in April following the show's afterparty, JoJo notably split from girlfriend and Australian influencer Kath Ebbs. Siwa also publicly confirmed her new romance with Chris during an interview for Capital Radio. She admitted that their relationship was no longer 'platonic' and said that she was 'head over heels' for Hughes. And during an appearance on Capital Breakfast, JoJo described their relationship as 'earthquake proof.' JoJo - who has had the chance to meet Hughes' parents - also stated that she is very happy with Chris and said that he makes her want to be a better person each day. Earlier this week, Siwa was ridiculed by fans after she unveiled a new look as she shared a glimpse at a new music video on Monday for her Bette Davis cover. The star also altered the lyrics in tribute to her boyfriend Chris. JoJo could be seen sported platinum blonde hair that was curled into a vintage-inspired style. She also wore pearls around her neck and a light blue bralette top with ruffled details. The look was in stark contrast to her previous one in recent years - such as opting for bold ensembles and heavy eye makeup. One penned on X: 'Never thought I'd see the day where JoJo Siwa gets a boyfriend and becomes a trad wife,' referencing to the term 'traditional wife' that has shown women on social media playing a conventional role at home. 'She's setting us back decades, making men think it was actually "just a phase" and they can actually "turn us straight" if they want to. It's so bad,' another wrote.

Major blow for 'border breacher' owner of Chapel Street bar as it collapses owing over $800,000

A once-popular cocktail bar on Melbourne 's iconic Chapel Street has closed its doors for good after it went bust owing more than $800,000 to creditors. Morris Jones, founded by restaurateur Hayden Burbank, officially entered insolvency on June 26 with Justin Howlett of SMB Advisory appointed as administrator. Morris Jones had announced its closure in March, calling the decision 'heartbreaking.' 'The hospitality industry is facing unprecedented challenges and it has become incredibly difficult to sustain business in this current climate,' the statement read. 'We are all deeply saddened by this situation. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal customers for their love and support over the journey.' Burbank, who rose to prominence for both his hospitality ventures and his public controversies, stepped back from daily operations in November 2021, resigning as a director of Bambou Restaurant Pty Ltd, the company behind the venue. His mother, Antoinette Burbank, is listed as the current director, while Hayden remains the sole shareholder. The collapse follows a string of challenges for Burbank, who in 2021 was given a suspended six-month jail sentence in Western Australia after faking documents to illegally travel to Perth during a Covid lockdown to watch the AFL Grand Final. Burbank is also known for his relationship with Married At First Sight star Belinda Vickers. The couple announced their engagement in February 2024. Their relationship blossomed after he spent 90 days behind bars at WA's maximum-security Hakea prison, which earned him the jailhouse nickname of 'border breacher'. Hayden described his experience at one of Australia's toughest jails as 'the ultimate game of Survivor'. 'You have to form alliances and not do anything stupid and get through each day by day,' he told the Saturday Herald Sun in March 2022. 'They are the longest days of your life. I'm not built for jail. Nobody is built for jail.' Hayden added he shared a cell with one of the prison's top dogs, a bikie, who would wake him up each morning and taunt: 'Border breacher, border breacher'. The restaurateur hosted a farewell party at the closed-down venue, which reportedly upset former staff who alleged they were owed unpaid wages. Financial records reveal the company owes $62,589 to the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and $8,681 in WorkCover liabilities. Several suppliers are also out of pocket, including Cambridge Cellars ($9,992), MRC Builders ($160,458), Hosp Management ($16,251), Moorabbin Marble & Granite ($15,675), Saunders Events ($15,739), and Kresta Blinds ($8,528). In addition to suppliers, several private investors are listed among the creditors. These include Andrew Murphy, owed $58,400, Brad Putzier, owed $60,000, and Daniel Barlow, owed $69,600. Despite Burbank taking a step back from day-to-day operations in 2021, he is listed as the only employee owed money from the company, with claims totalling $59,711 in unpaid wages and $30,289 in long service leave. The collapse follows a number of other Melbourne venues including Asian fusion restaurants Kekou and Klae. The venues in the inner-city suburb of Richmond entered liquidation earlier this year. The businesses had debts exceeding $1.3million, including an estimated $50,000 in unclaimed vouchers and $400,000 owed to the ATO.
