Ten years on, passengers want an upgrade to Metro-1

Hindustan Times22-05-2025
MUMBAI: Some may call it a success story. But for frequent users of Metro 1, their patience is wearing thin. Long wait times on narrow, overcrowded platforms and a shoulder-to-shoulder commute during peak hours in closed air-conditioned coaches is not what the city promised when it flagged off Mumbai's first metro rail corridor a decade ago.
Over the last couple of days, frustration has been spilling over on this Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro corridor. The stations at Ghatkopar, Andheri and Marol are particularly congested. An average 114,500 commuters use Ghatkopar station daily, 83,000 Andheri, and Marol Naka and Saki Naka more than 40,000 a day.
During the week, at least twice, passengers complained about stubborn queues near the automatic access control doors and being able to barely squeeze into the coaches.
'There are insane queues on Metro Line 1 at multiple stations, and you feel stuffy inside the AC metro trains during peak hours due to overcrowding. The government must intervene and at least ask the operator to increase the number of coaches,' said Andheri resident Dhaval Shah, who regularly travels on Line-1.
A vital east-west connector, Line 1 runs through major commercial hubs in the suburbs. It skirts the international airport, services the area around several luxury hotels, and passes though industrial and commercial areas such as Saki Naka and Marol, not to mention busy neighbourhoods in Andheri.
Moreover, Line 1 integrates with other metro rail corridors such as Lines 2A and 7, as well as the railways, an excellent example of multi-modal transport. Now it's time to upgrade.
According to statistics provided by Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), which operates Line 1, this corridor caters to 4.55 lakh passengers daily. Footfalls have touched 5 lakh. Commuters are demanding an increase in the frequency of trains from the present 5-6 minutes. They also want coaches to be added to the trains, to increase their carrying capacity, thus bringing down wait times at metro stations.
Citizen activist Zoru Bhatena summed it up best when he vented his frustration in a post on X that read: 'Decade-old Metro-1 runs packed on 4-coaches. Brand new Metro-3 runs empty on 8-coaches.'
MMOPL said there were no plans to upgrade the system, blaming overcrowding on the ongoing school vacations. In a bid to justify maintaining the status quo, they claim the number of commuters on Line 1 has not risen and the line is being 'managed well'.
However, the numbers rose significantly when lines 2A and 7 opened in January 2023, increasing ridership on Line 1 by around 30,000. There is no major contribution to ridership from Line-3,' said an MMOPL official.
Transport experts point out that there were plans for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to take over operations of Line-1. This might have improved how the line was run. However, those plans fell through.

Metro Line 9 Set to Transform Travel From Mira-Bhayandar To Key Mumbai Hubs

Last Updated: The double-decker metro, flagged off last week, will connect Mira-Bhayander to Mumbai's western and eastern suburbs as well as the international airport in Mumbai. Maharashtra's Thane district will soon get its first metro as the trial run of Phase-1 of Metro Line-9 between Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon was flagged off by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis last week. This double-decker metro will connect Mira-Bhayander to Mumbai's western and eastern suburbs as well as the international airport in Mumbai, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). MMRDA Chairman and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar were also present during the trial run of the metro. The project is in its final testing phase and will be open to the public soon. How This Metro Will Revolutionise Travel? The new metro line is expected to transform daily commute for Mira-Bhayandar residents, offering direct connectivity to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport via Lines 7, 7A, Andheri (West) via Line 2B, Ghatkopar via Lines 7 and 1, and Link Road through Metro Line-2A at Dahisar (East). The line will be expanded to include Thane via Line-10 at Miragaon and Vasai-Virar via Line-13. The project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly near the Dahisar Toll Naka, reduce vehicular emissions through eco-friendly commuting, and introduce energy-efficient systems like regenerative braking, said MMRDA. 'This stretch offers seamless connectivity along the Western Express Highway and will act as a major decongestion solution. It is the first time in the MMR that a double-decker structure combining a metro and a flyover has been constructed," said CM Fadnavis during the test run last week. 'Under the MMRDA's leadership, we are working towards a 337 km-long metro network for Mumbai. Our goal is to commission 50-60 km of metro each year, thereby offering complete last-mile and end-to-end connectivity. This will bring down the number of vehicles on roads and reduce pollution levels significantly," he added. A bullet train station project is also in the works in Maharashtra's Palghar district, as efforts are underway to integrate it with the state's transport system. Maha: Thane gets first metro, trial run for Metro Line 9 phase I commences

Mumbai: The trial run of Phase-1 of Metro Line-9 commenced on Wednesday, marking the first-ever metro line in Thane district. It was flagged off by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister & Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Chairman Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. A technical inspection was also carried out in their presence. Metro Line-9 is part of Mumbai's pioneering double-decker infrastructure project, where both metro and vehicular flyovers share a common viaduct. Phase 1 spans 4.4 km from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon, with stations at Dahisar (East), Pandurangwadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon. According to MMRDA, the Metro Line-9 will transform travel for Mira-Bhayandar residents by connecting directly to CSMIA Airport via Lines 7, 7A, and Andheri (West) via Line 2B, Ghatkopar via Lines 7 and 1, Link Road through Metro Line-2A at Dahisar (East), Thane via Line-10 at Miragaon ( in Future) and Vasai-Virar via the upcoming Line-13. 'The implementation of this corridor is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, especially near Dahisar Toll Naka, lower vehicular emissions and promote eco-friendly commuting, introduce energy-efficient systems like regenerative braking and employ green construction practices with reduced environmental impact,' said the MMRDA in a release. Chief Minister Fadnavis said: 'Technical testing for this phase has begun. This stretch offers seamless connectivity along the Western Express Highway and will act as a major decongestion solution. It is the first time in the MMR that a double-decker structure combining a metro and a flyover has been constructed. Mira-Bhayandar will immensely benefit from this integration, and we are committed to completing 50 km of metro this year, followed by 62 km next year and 60 km in the year after. By 2027, metro travel will expand considerably, alleviating the load on our arterial roads.' In his speech, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said: 'The proposed extension up to Virar will ensure connectivity across Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts. Under MMRDA's leadership, we are working towards a 337 km-long metro network for Mumbai. Our goal is to commission 50–60 km of metro each year, thereby offering complete last-mile and end-to-end connectivity. This will bring down the number of vehicles on the roads and reduce pollution levels significantly.' Further, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said: 'Metro Line-9 is a testimony to our commitment to fast-tracking infrastructure projects that benefit the common man. With reduced travel times and enhanced intermodal connectivity, this corridor will improve the ease of commuting and contribute positively to the regional economy.' MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee asserted that Metro Line-9 is a strategic connector that integrates Mira-Bhayandar with the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region. 'With seamless interchanges to key metro lines including Line-2A, Line-7, Line-1, and the upcoming Lines 10 and 13, this corridor creates a continuous, end-to-end travel experience from Mira-Bhayandar to Andheri, Ghatkopar, Thane, and even Vasai-Virar. It exemplifies our vision of 'Mumbai in Minutes'—where time, distance, and congestion no longer constrain opportunity, mobility, or growth,' he remarked.
