Electric vehicle fires almost double in two years

Fires involving electric vehicle with lithium-ion batteries have almost doubled in two year with UK fire brigades tackling at least three blazes per day as battery-powered cars and e-bikes become more popular and commonplace on our streets.
There has been a 93 per cent increase in instances recorded between 2022 and 2024, a new report from business insurer QBE revealed this week.
A Freedom of Information (FOI) request to UK fire services in March discovered e-bikes are the major contributor with 362 cases last year (up from 181 in 2022). But alarmingly for drivers, the volume of electric car blazes rose by 77 per cent over the two-year period.
Fires involving 'e-cars' increased from 131 to 232 between 2022 and 2024.
While the number of electric cars on the road in the UK hit over one million in 2024, which makes the increase in fires seem minimal, QBE believes that the risk from EV fires is substantial due to their fire intensity, speed of ignition and the rapid spreading caused by lithium-ion batteries.
Calling for improvements to lithium-ion battery safety, Adrian Simmonds from QBE Insurance, said instances of fires are 'increasing at a worrying pace' and warned they 'burn differently, take longer to tackle, typically need ten times more water to put out and are often more harmful to the surrounding environment'.
The rising number of lithium-ion battery fires due e-vehicles
Lithium-ion batteries can be found in most rechargeable devices, including smartphones, laptops, power tools and e-vehicles.
But it's e-bikes in particular that are causing the scary rise in lithium-ion battery fires in the UK.
These electric-powered bikes designed for easy cycling are being linked to almost a third (27 per cent) of all recorded lithium-ion battery blazes last year.
E-bikes accounted for 362 fires in 2024, double from 181 in 2022. This means the nation's fire services tended to an e-bike fire almost every day last year.
Unsurprisingly, London is the epicentre for e-vehicle blazes, accounting for almost a third of all lithium-ion battery fires in the UK last year and nearly half of all e-bike igniting (49 per cent or 178 incidents).
London currently has over 40,000 e-bikes for hire, with Forest bikes and Lime bikes the most common.
TfL is also expanding its fleet of 'Boris bikes' to include 2,000 e-bikes by the end of summer.
Electric car fires increased by 77 per cent - up to 232 in 2024 making them the second most common e-vehicle to have a battery fire.
Electric scooter battery fires increased by 32 per cent, up from 118 in 2022 to 156 in 2024, the report found.
While electric mobility scooters might not have the highest combustion rates – up 20 per cent in two years from 25 in 2022 to 30 in 2024 - the threat to their users is heightened, particularly for those with limited mobility who may struggle to vacate quickly in the event of a fire.
Where in the UK has the most lithium-ion battery fires?
Of all the fire services in the UK, the London Fire Brigade recorded the highest number of lithium-ion battery fires in 2024.
There were 407 incidents in the capital – more than four times the next highest region.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was second, reporting 100 lithium-ion battery fires, followed by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue - which covers Leeds and Bradford - reporting 94 lithium-ion battery fires.
In terms of the whereabouts blazes sparked, the most frequent is at residential properties, followed by outdoors and commercial premises.
Why lithium-ion battery fires are particularly dangerous and what's being done about it
Lithium-ion battery fires are the result of 'thermal runaway', where batteries start to irreversibly overheat, usually due to impact damage, over-charging or over-heating.
In the case of electric cars, batteries are extremely powerful. So, even though they are relatively uncommon, any fire can result in explosive incidents that are significantly more energetic, causing extensive damage, and potentially injury or even death.
In light of the risk these fires could have to e-transport users, the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) launched the 'Buy Safe, Be Safe' campaign in October 2024, advising consumers to avoid rogue online sellers and prioritise safe purchases.
Additionally, the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill, currently under parliamentary review, aims to strengthen safety standards for products sold in the UK.
As personal e-transport becomes more popular and more electric cars hit the road, QBE says there is a growing need for better public education on safe battery use and fire prevention.
Simmonds warned: 'People need to understand the risks [with lithium-ion battery fires] and how to deal with them.
'While QBE supports the adoption of e-transport, we also call for stricter regulation.
'For instance, the UK should stop the sale of rogue e-bikes and other unregulated devices. This could be done in the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill, which is going through Parliament.
'In the meantime, consumers should purchase e-bikes and e-scooters from reputable companies, so retailers that show they take quality and compliance seriously with a genuine CE mark.
'Raising awareness around safe charging, use and disposal of lithium-ion batteries is critical to keeping people and property safe.'

Soaring Saudi exports and trade tensions will test oil price resilience

LONDON, July 14 - Oil markets have remained remarkably resilient so far this year, despite concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policies and rising OPEC+ production quotas. But that strength will now be tested, as Saudi output is starting to surge just as demand appears to be slowing. Benchmark oil prices are currently near $70 a barrel, down from a 2025 high of $82 in mid-January, but above the four-year low of $62 set in May. That followed Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffflip-flop, which sparked confusion about the policy direction and fears of a severe disruption to global economic activity and oil consumption. Investor jitters were compounded by a significant OPEC+ policy shift. Under the leadership of Saudi Arabia, the group including the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and Russia, started to aggressively ramp up production quotas in April for the first time in over three years. The group is set to add 2.5 million barrels per day of production between April and September. Given this backdrop, why has crude remained so resilient? It's likely in large part because most of these fears have yet to materialize. Crucially, Trump not only delayed his 'reciprocal tariffs', but he also held positive talks with Beijing, which managed to defuse some of the market's worst fears about trade tensions between the world's two biggest economies. To be sure, economic activity has slowed in recent months, but not nearly as badly as the initial drop in oil prices implied. Global GDP is forecast to slow to 2.3% in 2025, according to a recent World Bank report, opens new tab, nearly half a percentage point lower than expected at the start of the year. The OPEC+ supply hikes were also initially more talk than action. The decision by OPEC+ to unwind 2.2 million bpd of supply cuts, as well as to raise the United Arab Emirates baseline production by 300,000 bpd starting in April, initially had little impact on global supplies, mostly because several members had already been producing above their assigned quotas. While Saudi Arabia's production did rise significantly in June by 700,000 bpd to 9.8 million bpd, a large share of the increase was consumed domestically by its refineries as well as in power plants that use crude to generate electricity during summer's peak demand, limiting exports. Saudi "crude burn" is set to reach 695,000 bpd in July and is expected to remain elevated in August, according to consultancy Wood Mackenzie. The tide may be turning, however. As we move into the second half of the year, the negative trends that spooked investors in April now appear to be building. Trade tensions have come back to the fore in recent days after Trump outlined new tariffs for a number of countries, including allies and , along with a 50% tariff , and a 35% levy on many Canadian goods. Crude consumption already started to falter in recent months. While demand rose by a robust 1.1 million barrels per day in the first quarter of 2025, growth is set to halve in the second quarter, according to the International Energy Agency. Importantly, demand in countries that are heavily dependent on trade with the United States seems to have taken a hit. Demand in China dropped in the second quarter from a year earlier by 160,000 bpd, Japan's by 80,000 bpd, Mexico's by 40,000 bpd and South Korea's by 70,000 bpd. U.S. demand over the same period also contracted by 60,000 bpd, according to the IEA. These trends could accelerate if the trade wars kick in in earnest. Meanwhile, oil production is expected to start rising significantly in the coming months, particularly from Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter, as it ramps up production and as its domestic crude burn eases as summer ebbs. Saudi's increase in domestic consumption initially meant its oil exports only rose from 5.9 million bpd in April to 6.4 million bpd in June, according to Kpler data. Saudi shipments are, however, set to surge to 7.5 million bpd in July, the highest since April 2023. Saudi production and exports are likely to increase further in August as Riyadh seeks to regain market share. Its slice of the global market declined to 11% last year from a 13% average in the previous three decades. The Kingdom's exports to China are set to rise to the highest in more than two years in August, Reuters reported. The increases in OPEC+ output, together with large increases in production outside the group, are set to increase global supply by 2.1 million bpd to 105.1 million bpd in 2025, according to the IEA. The energy watchdog forecasts global demand to reach 103.7 million bpd this year, which implies a significant oversupply of 1.4 million bpd in 2025. Oil prices will therefore likely come under heavy downward pressure in the coming months, particularly once demand ebbs in the fourth quarter. And this downward push will only get stronger if Trump's renewed trade threats turn out to have real bite. Enjoying this column? CRASH investigators are said to be investigating the medical records of the doomed Air India flight Captain amid claims he suffered from mental health problems. Preliminary report into the fatal crash found the plane's fuel switches were cut off, which led to a catastrophic loss of thrust during the initial take-off. 9 9 9 9 The Air India flight bound to London Gatwick was led by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who was reportedly just months away from retirement. But the pilot had been considering leaving the airlines early to look after his elderly father, The Telegraph revealed. A leading aviation expert in India told the media outlet that Captain Sabharwal reportedly suffered from mental health issues and depression - and had taken time off in the last few years following his mum's death. Captain Mohan Ranganathan, a former instructor pilot of Boeing 737, said: "I have heard from several Air India pilots who told me he had some depression and mental health issues. "He had taken time off from flying in the last three to four years." Although Mr Ranganathan added that Captain Sabharwal "must have been medically cleared by the company [Air India] doctors" before flying. He is understood to have taken a Class I medical exam on September 5 last year. Investigators are now said to be probing his medical records after the preliminary crash report indicated there may have been human error, although some aviation experts claim it is a case of deliberate action. Sources said the black box analysis has so far been unable to rule out 'improper, inadvertent or intentional' action that caused them to be flipped. Families of the victims who tragically died in the crash have slammed the preliminary report as a cover-up. The Airline Pilots' Association of India (APAI) rejected the 'tone and direction' of the inquiry and said it came without sufficient evidence. However, India's Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said that investigators probed in a "mature, transparent" way. "This is a preliminary report. We want the final report to come in, so let us wait for it," he added. Early findings in the 15-page report released by the Indian authorities indicate switches to the engines' fuel supplies were moved from the "RUN" position to "CUTOFF". The fuel switches were then toggled to the "RUN" position, and the engines appeared to be gathering power, but failed to stop the plane from decelerating. Key findings of the report: Dual engine shutdown - fuel cutoff switches moved from 'RUN' to 'CUTOFF' Confusion between pilots - cockpit audio confirms one pilot asked 'why did you cutoff', the other replied 'I didn't' RAT deployed - as seen in CCTV footage before the crash Engine relight attempted - fuel switches were found returned to the "RUN" at crash site 32 seconds - the time the aircraft was airborne before it crashed Thrust levers mismatch - Thrust levers found at idle but black box data shows takeoff thrust was still engaged Fuel test pass - fuel was clean without any contamination Normal take-off set-up - Flaps and landing gear correctly configured No bird activity - clear skies, good visibility, light winds Pilot credentials clear - both medically fit and rested No sabotage detected - although FAA alerted over a known fuel switch vulnerability not checked by Air India Aircraft loading - the flight was within weight and balance limits Analysis of the cockpit voice recording revealed that one of the pilots asked: 'Why did you cut off?" To which the other pilot replied: 'I didn't." Though the report does not identify which comments were made by the flight's captain and which were made by the first officer. Nor does it "identify the cause - whether it was crew error, mechanical malfunction, or electronic failure." Flipping the switches to cut off almost immediately cuts the fuel supply to the engines. It is most often used to turn engines off once a plane has arrived at its airport gate and in certain emergency situations, such as an engine fire. But the inconclusive report, which came after 30 days of the crash, does not indicate that the flight encountered any such emergency situation. 9 9 9 It is almost impossible to turn the switches off accidentally - they must be pulled up and locked before flipping - a safety design feature that was introduced decades ago. Protective guards are further installed to minimise the risks - raising further questions as to why the fuel switches in the Air India flight were turned off. The report points out that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2018 issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) - highlighting that a few Boeing 737 fuel control switches were installed with the locking feature disengaged. But it was not deemed unsafe, and no Airworthiness Directive (AD) - a legally enforceable regulation to correct unsafe conditions in a product - was issued. A similar switch design is used in Boeing 787-8 aircraft, including Air India's VT-ANB Dreamliner in question. The FAA and Boeing have now privately issued notifications that the fuel switch locks on Boeing planes are safe, according to four sources and a document seen by Reuters. The report said Air India had said it had not carried out the FAA's suggested inspections, as the FAA 2018 advisory was not a legal mandate. But it also said maintenance records showed that the throttle control module, which includes the fuel switches, was replaced in 2019 and 2023 on the plane involved in the crash. Experts have said a pilot would not be able to accidentally move the fuel switches. "If they were moved because of a pilot, why?" asked U.S. aviation safety expert Anthony Brickhouse. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner with 242 passengers on board - including 53 Brits - smashed into a doctors' hostel in Ahmedabad in the west of India. The plane was headed to London Gatwick when it crashed just seconds after take-off, killing all but one passenger. 9 9
