Beloved Northern California music festival plans a comeback with new leadership, stellar lineup

After a year marked by uncertainty and loss, the High Sierra Music Festival is set to return for its 33rd edition over the Fourth of July weekend, bringing its mix of music and a renewed sense of community to the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds.
The festival's future was cast into doubt following the death of founder and talent buyer Roy Carter in May 2024, compounded by financial pressures brought on by the post-COVID live event economy. But co-producer and longtime organizer Dave Margulies stepped in as lead curator, aiming to both honor the event's legacy and chart a new path forward.
'Our goal has always been to turn people on to new music and create space for magic to happen — not just on the big stages, but in the small, serendipitous moments,' Margulies said in a statement. 'From legacy acts to newcomers, the lineup is built to surprise and delight.'
Scheduled for July 3-6, this year's festival will continue to showcase the signature experiences that have made High Sierra a favorite: multiple sets by featured artists, intimate sessions and spontaneous collaborations. Attendees can expect the usual eccentric touches — daily parades, late-night jam sessions, yoga classes and vendor villages — all set against the Sierra Nevada foothills.
This year's bill features a diverse lineup of returning favorites and emerging talent, including Palo Alto native and bluegrass virtuoso Molly Tuttle, Bay Area jam-pop staples ALO, high-energy improvisational rockers Dogs in a Pile, genre-blending hip-hop pioneer Lyrics Born, and 17-year-old guitar prodigy Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge.
Singer-songwriter Amy Helm plans to bring her Helm Midnight Family Ramble outside of Woodstock for the first time, and multiple members of the Trey Anastasio Band are expected to appear in a range of collaborative projects.
'High Sierra is a musical playground,' said artist-at-large Dan 'Lebo' Lebowitz. ' From intimate Troubadour Sessions to Playshops and full-stage sets, it's a convergence point where once-in-a-lifetime collaborations happen — and lifelong friendships begin.'
New for 2025 are upgraded amenities, including the Lagniappe Lounge, a shaded indoor venue with lounge seating and cocktails, and The Happy Glamper, a premium, climate-controlled camping option.
'It's the most wonderful time of the year,' he said. 'People sparkling, singing, dancing, with hugs and parades and spontaneity. Just walking the grounds is an adventure. It feeds my soul.'

This SteelSeries headset might be the perfect, cutesy set of cans for cozy gamers on TikTok — here's why

If you spend a lot of time on YouTube, TikTok or even Instagram, you may be familiar with the 'cozy gaming' phenomenon. If you don't, allow me to explain. Any game that focuses or emphasizes on relaxation and promotes stress-free gaming is considered a cozy game. These have been around for a long, long time — think Zoo Tycoon. Cozy gaming gained massive popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, and with the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and it hasn't gone away, with many TikTokers and YouTubers streaming themselves playing such titles with chill music playing in the background and often wearing cutesy headsets. I've just tested a headset that looks like it belongs on a cozy gamer's desk: the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless. The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless is an extremely comfortable gaming headset thanks to its memory foam earcups, and it comes with a detailed companion app that offers 200+ game-tailored presets — most of which work excellently. The detachable mic is loud and clear too. Why, you ask? It's a fantastic headset that creates immersive soundscapes regardless of the game you're playing, putting you right into the middle of the action — or in the case cozy gaming, non-action. And it looks very cute too, available in a couple fun colorways. If you're on the hunt for a great gaming headset, let me introduce you to the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless... Unlike SteelSeries' other headsets which are usually available in boring black and white colorways, the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless comes in two popping colors: Lavender and Aqua. Very girly pop indeed. SteelSeries kindly sent us both colors and I have to say, I absolutely love the Lavender model. It might be the cutest headset I've had the pleasure of using. All I need is a pair of clip-on cat ears. But don't let looks deceive you; the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless is as powerful as it is cute. It's fitted with 40mm Neodymium drivers and features spatial audio, both of which work in conjunction to create immersive soundscapes. There's also a companion app which includes 200+ game-tailored EQ presets, each adding a new element of sound. I tested the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless for a week, and regardless of the game I played, the headset ensured I heard every soft and loud sound in all its glory. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, for instance, I loved listening to raindrops falling on the river's surface, or the wind blowing through and displacing blades of grass, a wave of calm washing over me. I wouldn't say TotK is necessarily a cozy game as there are many (stressful) battles involved, but when you're riding your horse through the lush fields of Hyrule or paragliding after jumping off a Skyview Tower, it sure feels cozy. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. And the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless does justice to every single sound and musical note in the game, making you feel like you're actually Link. If you've got a stressful job or really, just enjoy playing cozy games to unwind, I'd highly recommend the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless to fully immerse yourself and disconnect from the outside world. Alongside from sounding incredible, the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless is a mighty comfortable headset. Its 'AirWeave' memory foam earcups are spacious and they sit snugly around your ears, isolating outside noise too. Also, they're extremely breathable, so you don't need to worry about your ears getting too hot or sweat pooling up — as is often the case with leather or leatherette earcups. I also have to say that for cozy gamers who like to livestream their content on TikTok or YouTube, the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless is perfect as it comes with a detachable bidirectional boom mic — so don't worry if you don't have an external microphone. It makes you sound loud and clear, and it even reduces external sounds thanks to its noise-canceling nature (you can listen to two clips in my SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless review). Okay, I wouldn't call myself a purveyor of cozy gaming exclusively. I spend a good chunk of my free time playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and the Assassin's Creed franchise, but I'd be lying if I didn't get the appeal of cozy games. I, too, want to sit in a dark room lit up by string lights and candles (no, I am not a witch) and wear a cutesy headset and play Tiny Glade, Journey and even Good Pizza, Great Pizza. Sounds lovely, doesn't it? Imagine kicking your feet back and unwinding, and letting the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless transport you to a world where stress is a thing of the past. And to be honest, any game is a cozy game if you're brave enough. I'd even argue that Baldur's Gate 3 has cozy aspects to it — companions gathered around a fire when you're long resting, hello! If you want a gaming headset that a) completes the cozy gamer look and b) makes games sound so good that real life sounds boring, then go for the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless. If anything, this headset has made me actively want to play cozy games and disassociate from reality.

Happy Fourth of July! We hope the long weekend is full of delightful weather, great food, and exciting movies. Dinosaurs have infiltrated the box office thanks to Jurassic World Rebirth. Race cars are also driving at breakneck speeds in F1. When you need a break from the blistering heat, stream a free movie on a FAST service. That is not a typo. FAST services cost zero dollars. One of our recommended movies is aptly titled Independence Day. Read about the rest of our selections below. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+. A Few Good Men (1992) A Few Good Men isn't a Fourth of July movie. However, it is a movie involving the military and its values of honor, integrity, and loyalty. Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) is a JAG lawyer known for cutting deals and avoiding trial. Kaffee wants to seek a plea bargain for his latest case — two Marines charged with murdering another soldier at Guantanamo Bay. However, the two Marines and his partner, Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore), convince Kaffee to take it to trial. The investigation leads Kaffee to believe that the Marines followed the orders of a commanding officer. Proving their innoncence will be tough sledding, but Kafee and Galloway will take their chances. The courtroom scenes are more riveting than most action movies. The final battle between Cruise and Jack Nicholson is why we go to the movies. Hot take: Cruise, not Nicholson, is the one who wins the scene. Stream A Few Good Men on Pluto TV. Jurassic World (2015) The Jurassic Park franchise is a quintessential summer blockbuster. Action, adventure, and dinosaurs — what more could an audience want? With Jurassic World Rebirth in theaters, revisit the movie that kicked off the second trilogy a decade ago, Jurassic World. It may have taken a few tries, but John Hammond's dream of a dinosaur theme park has come true in Jurassic World. The humans couldn't take their win and go on with their day. No, they had to mess around and create a transgenic dinosaur bigger and nastier than a T-rex. The Indominus rex eventually escapes captivity and transfers power over the island back to the dinosaurs. Life found a way, and if the remaining humans want to survive, they must find a way off the island. Stream Jurassic World on Tubi. Independence Day (1996) Welcome to Earth. Independence Day is Roland Emmerich's alien invasion saga that revitalized the disaster movie. After an extraterrestrial ship arrives in Earth's atmosphere, panic sets in, as humanity questions if this is the end. The aliens do not come in peace, destroying several major cities and killing millions. On the verge of extinction, a select group of survivors — including President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman), David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum), and Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith) — band together and prepare for humanity's last stand. Try staying calm during Whitmore's Fourth of July speech. It's impossible. Today, we celebrate Independence Day! Stream Independence Day on Tubi.

Philly POPS make patriotic return to performing before Fourth of July in Philadelphia Philly POPS make patriotic return to performing before Fourth of July in Philadelphia Philly POPS make patriotic return to performing before Fourth of July in Philadelphia With Independence Hall as the backdrop, the Philly POPS made a patriotic return on the eve of July Fourth. After dissolving post-pandemic following financial difficulties, this was their first performance as the reborn Philly POPS. "It's been two years, in which we have been clawing our way back, and we are just so excited to be able to provide music for our city," Matthew Koveal, the executive director of Philly POPS, said. Many came early to grab the perfect spot. They say this night has become a tradition to help kick off the July Fourth holiday weekend. "We're happy to have them back and happy that they're the Philly POPS again," Christina Ricco, from Abington, said. "It's always exciting to celebrate the Fourth of July where they invented Fourth of July," Desiree Wayne, from Philadelphia, said. Krystn Kuckelman drove in from Glenside with her family, including her daughter Bailey. "We wouldn't miss it, we have been coming here since my kids were babies," Kuckelman said. And with the sounds of freedom filling the air — most said the event was just the thing to help them get into the spirit of it all. "It's a nice time to pause and reflect and be thankful for the democracy that we have and sort of get reinvigorated to continue fighting for that democracy," Jordan Wayne, from Philadelphia, said.
