After over 20 years, '90s Malaysian girl group Elite to hold first solo concert this September

Yahoo23-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 – Popular 1990s Malaysian girl group Elite are reuniting for a solo concert in conjunction with their 30th anniversary.
This will be their first solo concert in over 20 years and is set to take place at Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on September 20.
Organised by Icon Entertainment, the Elite Live '25 concert will feature all five original members — Abby Abadi, Azza Zawari, Linda Rafar, Watie Sadali, and Sasha Saidin — taking centre stage this September.
According to Linda, the decision to hold a solo concert came after the warm reception they received during the GenKRU concert at Axiata Arena in May, where the group made a surprise appearance during one of the four-day shows.
'Actually, we were a bit nervous because, as you all know, it's been quite a while since we performed live together, especially on a large scale.
'When we received the offer from Icon Entertainment, we had mixed feelings at first but eventually agreed to it.
'This was after taking into consideration that some of our songs are still favoured and relevant, and we want to party with all our fans — both old and new,' Linda said.
Formed in 1995, Elite was the first act signed under KRU Records. Over five years with the label, they released several albums including Catwalk, Tamparan, Idola, Selamat Tinggal Teman, G.I.G, and Merbahaya.
The theme for Elite Live '25 is Catwalk, and fans are encouraged to dress their best as there will also be a red carpet session.
Tickets for Elite Live '25 will go on sale starting June 26 at 2pm, with prices ranging from RM268 to RM1,088.

Park Chan-wook's ‘No Other Choice,' Starring Lee Byung-hun, to Open Busan Film Festival

Arguably, there was no other choice…. The Busan International Film Festival has selected the latest wildly anticipated feature from Korean maestro Park Chan-wook to open its landmark 30th edition on Sept. 17. A black-comedy survival thriller starring Korean leading man Lee Byung-hun, Park's 12th feature, No Other Choice, will have its world premiere in competition at the 82nd Venice Film Festival before heading to Korea's biggest cinema event for its Asian debut. No Other Choice stars Lee and beloved Korean actress Son Ye-jin as a married couple struggling to hold their family together amid mounting economic desperation. The film follows Man-su (Lee), a once-content middle-class family man who is abruptly laid off from his job, sending him into a spiral of anxiety and desperation. As he scrambles to regain employment and preserve the life he's built, his wife Miri (Son) becomes equally determined to protect their children and home at any cost. The supporting cast includes Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, Yeom Hye-ran and Cha Seung-won. No Other Choice is based on Donald E. Westlake's novel The Ax, which was previously adapted to the screen in French by Costa-Gavras. Park first teased the project during a public appearance at BIFF in 2019, describing it as a long-in-the-making passion project he hoped would come to be seen as his 'masterpiece.' The director's many fans are anticipating his signature blend of muscular craftsmanship, elegant mise-en-scène, psychological intensity and moral ambiguity. 'I am deeply moved and excited to experience the premiere of Park Chan-wook's desired project alongside diverse audiences on the festival's opening day,' said BIFF festival director Jung Hanseok in a statement. 'I sincerely hope that its selection will build meaningful momentum to garner greater attention and foster renewed interest in Korean cinema.' The selection of No Other Choice underscores BIFF's efforts to champion the vibrancy and global reach of contemporary Korean filmmaking during its landmark 30th anniversary edition, organizers say. The festival runs Sept. 17–26 in the southern port city of Busan. No Other Choice is Park's first directorial effort since 2022's Decision to Leave, which won him the best director prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Neon has acquired North American distribution rights to the new film. A major awards season push is expected from the hit-making distributor after its breakthrough success with Bong Joon Ho's Parasite. Korean Auteur Lee Chang-dong to Direct Feature Drama ‘Possible Love' for Netflix

It's an improbable pairing yet nonetheless exciting news for film buffs: Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong is returning to filmmaking to direct a feature project backed by Netflix. Titled Possible Love, the drama is Lee's first movie in eight years since his critically acclaimed Haruki Murakami adaptation, Burning. The new film reunites Lee with the stars of his most critically revered earlier work. Possible Love's story is said to follow 'the intertwined lives of two married couples leading completely opposite lives. As their worlds collide, fractures begin to appear in their daily existence.' Jeon previously won the Cannes Film Festival's best actress honor for her performance as the indelible lead of Lee's searing 2007 drama Secret Sunshine, and Sul was unforgettable in the lead roles of the director's early masterpieces Peppermint Candy (1999) and Oasis (2002). The duo also has longstanding screen chemistry, thanks to previous pairings in the Korean features I Wish I Had a Wife (2001), Birthday (2019) and Kill Boksoon (2023). The second couple — Sang-woo and Ye-ji — will be played by Zo In-sung (Moving, Escape from Mogadishu) and Cho Yeo-jeong (best remembered as a rich wife from Parasite). Possible Love is co-written by Lee and Oh Jung-mi, his prior writing partner on Burning. The film is produced by Pine House Film, which also backed Burning. An international cult favorite, Lee is revered for the philosophical nerve that suffuses his rigorously inventive melodramas, which variously pick apart the complexities of Korean society. He began his working life as a high-school teacher, later becoming an accomplished novelist before transitioning to screenwriting and directing with his breakthrough debut, Green Fish (1997). He also made a brief, improbable foray into government, serving as South Korea's Minister of Culture and Tourism from 2003 to 2004 (his stint was marked by a bold but ultimately failed attempt to institute screen quotas for independently financed filmmaking). Last year, Penguin Random House published Lee's first collection of short stories translated into English, Snowy Day & Other Stories. Several of his stories were previously translated and published by The New Yorker. Although he's directed just six features over his 30-year film career, Lee has consistently won honors at the major European festivals — but he's never gone home with one of the event's top prizes or received an Oscar nomination. Oasis (2002) won the special director's prize at the 59th Venice Film Festival; Secret Sunshine took best actress at Cannes; Poetry received the best screenplay award in Cannes; and Burning won the French fest's international critics' prize. DEMON SLAYER: INFINITY CASTLE Shatters Records in Japan and Could Take Down MUGAN TRAIN — GeekTyrant

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is off to an incredible start in Japan, and the numbers suggest it might dethrone Mugen Train as the highest-grossing anime film of all time. The highly anticipated movie, adapted from Koyoharu Gotouge's Infinity Castle arc, didn't just have a strong debut, it blew past records. It now holds the crown for Japan's highest opening day ever with 1.64 billion yen ($11.11 million). On its third day, it pulled in another 2 billion yen ($13 million), the best single-day performance for any film in Japan. Its opening weekend was equally massive, bringing in $37 million across three days and an astonishing $49 million in four days. It's been breaking a bunch of opening records previously set by Mugen Train , and now it beat a previous record set by Mugen Train , Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle and is now the fastest film to reach 10 billion yen in Japan's history, hitting the mark in only ten days. Fans worldwide eager to see the epic final battle will need to hang on a bit longer. This is the first of a trilogy wrapping up the saga, but an international rollout is staggered. According to Crunchyroll, the US and UK release date is set for September 12. That's when we'll see if this juggernaut can topple Mugen Train's $500 million global haul. Back in 2020, Mugen Train not only became the highest-grossing anime movie ever, surpassing Your Name , but it also ended up as the top-grossing film worldwide that year—beating Hollywood heavyweights like Tenet . Now, Infinity Castle is looking to claim that throne. If its record-breaking start is any indication, Demon Slayer fans could be witnessing history all over again.
