Eric Xu, Huawei's Deputy Chairman and Rotating Chairman, says carriers face new challenges in an increasingly mature market
Shanghai, China, June, 2025, During MWC Shanghai 2025, Eric Xu, Huawei's Deputy Chairman and Rotating Chairman, outlined four strategic pathways for driving growth in the telecommunications industry as carriers face new challenges in an increasingly mature market.
In a keynote address to industry leaders, Xu acknowledged that while the telecoms sector has experienced rapid growth over the past four decades, it now faces a period of stable development, where 'basic consumer needs are already met in major markets, and revenue growth is stagnating.'
Four Pathways to Sustainable Growth:
1. Meeting Evolving User Demands with High Growth Potential
Xu highlighted emerging high-value user segments that present significant opportunities for carriers. Professional delivery riders, for example, have grown from 30 million globally in 2020 to 70 million in 2024, with projections reaching 160 million by 2030.
'Food delivery riders' minutes of usage is four times that of an average user, and their data usage is twice as high, resulting in ARPU that's 1.6 times higher,' Xu noted.
Similarly, the livestreaming profession has expanded from 10 million practitioners in 2022 to an estimated 50 million in 2024, with projections reaching 130 million by 2030. These users consume five times more data than the average user, generating four times the average revenue per user (ARPU). He also highlighted that live streamers and esports gamers are a new, fast-growing segment of high-value users for carriers.
'If we look at the global market, it's clear that these demands promise high growth potential, and carriers who've met these needs are growing fast. Carriers who haven't ramped up for these needs yet might find it more challenging to achieve new growth,' added Xu.
2. Boosting HD Video Through Ecosystem Collaboration
Despite video comprising roughly 50% of mobile traffic, Xu identified a significant gap in high-definition video consumption. In tier-1 Chinese cities, 1080p and higher-definition video accounts for only 22% of total mobile video traffic.
'A 1080p video generates five times more traffic than its 360p counterpart,' Xu explained, emphasizing the revenue potential for carriers who can successfully coordinate with content providers (OTT), device manufacturers, and network equipment vendors to address pricing and technical barriers.
3. Accelerating 5G Vehicle Connectivity
Addressing the slow adoption of 5G-connected vehicles, projected to represent only 30% of cars sold in China by 2025, Xu called for industry-wide collaboration to address cost barriers, particularly those related to intellectual property rights and T-Box pricing.
He proposed a dual-connectivity approach, separating connections for vehicle cockpits (using B2C models) and T-Box connectivity (using B2B models) while maintaining that autonomous vehicles must be capable of independent operation without network dependency.
4. Expanding FTTR to Small and Medium Businesses
Building on the success of Fiber to the Room (FTTR) in premium residential markets, Xu outlined opportunities to extend this technology to micro and small businesses. With over 500 million such businesses worldwide, FTTR solutions can address common challenges, including poor Wi-Fi coverage, unreliable connections for critical applications, and limited device connectivity.
'With FTTR, carriers can bring fiber broadband to micro and small businesses too,' Xu said, noting that China currently has an estimated 75 million FTTR users compared to 500,000 in other countries.
Tailored Approaches for Different Markets
Xu concluded by emphasizing the need for customized growth strategies: 'Every carrier is different. Their markets are different, their business environments are different—and so is their competitive landscape. So, the pathways to growth are different too.'
'Huawei is always ready and willing to work together, helping carriers explore opportunities unique to them and carve out the right pathways to long-term, sustainable growth,' he concluded.

Todorov noted that relations between Bulgaria and China date back to 1985, when the first cooperation agreement was signed between the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and BCCI. He emphasized that BCCI has been a long-standing partner of the APACCCEEC since its inception, and a memorandum of cooperation was signed in 2016. The two organizations have jointly organized various events, disseminated information to stakeholders and institutions, and collaborated on the agricultural startup accelerator program run by APACCCEEC. Todorov added that the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry also takes part in events related to the One Belt, One Road initiative, recognizing the benefits of cooperation between China and the CEE countries. 10TH OF RAMADAN CITY, Egypt, June 28 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stressed on Saturday that Egypt is on track to becoming a true regional hub for industry in various sectors across the Middle East and Africa, thanks to its success in attracting leading global manufacturers. In a press conference following the inauguration of the Bosch home appliances factory in 10th of Ramadan City, Madbouly extended his greetings to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the Egyptian people on the upcoming anniversary of the June 30 Revolution, describing it as a cherished milestone that set Egypt back on the right course. The prime minister noted that the newly inaugurated Bosch facility represents the third major plant in Egypt's home appliances sector, following earlier inaugurations of the Chinese company Haier and Turkey's Beko. He underlined that these achievements were the result of the Egyptian state's proactive approach, personally reaching out to top executives and convincing them of Egypt's strong appeal as an investment destination. Madbouly explained that the government succeeded in granting these companies direct land allocation and the golden license, while removing all obstacles to expedite the establishment of their factories. "As a result, Egypt is not only becoming a center for local manufacturing, but also a strategic industrial hub serving the broader Middle East and Africa." He highlighted that the inauguration of these plants comes amid intensive efforts by the government and daily follow-up by President Sisi, who is deeply committed to advancing Egypt's industrial renaissance. Chinese experts at Al-Masry Al-Youm symposium warn that US and Israel are harming global economy
An assortment of Chinese economic experts from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences attended an Al-Masry Al-Youm seminar with international experts, where they affirmed that Israel's wars on the Gaza Strip and Iran will impact the global economy. The experts also warned of the negative impact that American tariffs will have on the world, and how Washington seeks its own success over the expense of others. Belt and Road Referring to the importance of the 'Belt and Road' initiative as a step towards a shared future and a path to peace, the experts discussed China's plans to eradicate poverty. They also touched on the revolutionary potential of AI technology and how it can be used to help treat previously incurable diseases. The Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Shanghai, Wu Xiuming, raised the importance of understanding the the 'Chinese Modernization Model,' which aims to eradicate poverty in China. Xiuming also touched on aiding friendly countries to China, such as Egypt, in in its economic advancement through investment projects as well as combating poverty. He explained that there is a common goal through a strategy for all countries, taking into account that each region and nation has its own characteristics. He emphasized that transferring China's experience does not necessarily have to be an exact translation, as each country has a specific population range compared to China, which exceeds 1.4 billion people. Xiuming assured that China has not and will never follow colonialism, and supports 'progress and peace for all'. Thus through the 'Belt and Road' initiative, Beijing is working to promote economic and security peace, and numerous mega projects are underway, such as the Administrative Capital in Cairo. Beijing commended the progress of the projects achieved in Egypt, which will benefit future generations. America's tariffs threaten global economic security A Professor of Economics at the Institute of Chinese Studies and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Xie Yiqing, discussed the issue of tariffs imposed by the US on many countries around the world. The Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Shanghai, Wu Xiuming, believes that AI is a means, not an end. Through its revolution in this field, it has been able to change everything. At Shanghai University and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, transportation research takes at least a week, while the DeepScience AI application has succeeded in completing it in 30 minutes. So it works to shorten the time, and in the midst of the information revolution, it has an impact on energy, electricity, and all jobs. The experts explained that through the academy's research, the concept of 'peaceful development' was emphasized as a Chinese cultural tradition, and that the government is working to combat poverty through self-reliance and hard work. Experts stressed that poverty reduction remains a common challenge for countries around the world. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese government has launched large-scale and sustained efforts to alleviate poverty, achieving remarkable results. Beijing has succeeded in eliminating poverty for about 100 million people. The Chinese government has put forward a comprehensive vision for China's future development and identified five distinct features along China's path to modernization: livable and vibrant homes, providing several policy measures to boost farmers' income growth, promoting rural work and human rights, developing agricultural production capacity, a new socialist countryside, and issuing decisions on accelerating water reform and development. They pointed out that, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, China's total grain production last year reached 707 million tons, an increase of 11.1 million tons over the previous year—a growth of 1.6 percent. This marks the first time that grain production has exceeded the 700 million-ton threshold since then. This has also boosted China's economic recovery and supported high-quality development, and has contributed to the stability of the global food market.
