Called to build a better world

As the Malaysian Catholic Church continues its journey toward the Malaysian Pastoral Convention (MPC) 2026, parish communities, ministries, and Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) are being called to deepen their engagement in four key pastoral focus areas: Family, Church, Ecology, and Society. Aug 01, 2025 KUALA LUMPUR: As the Malaysian Catholic Church continues its journey toward the Malaysian Pastoral Convention (MPC) 2026, parish communities, ministries, and Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) are being called to deepen their engagement in four key pastoral focus areas: Family, Church, Ecology, and Society. For 2025, the Church placed particular emphasis on Ecology and Society. In line with this direction, the Malaysian Catechetical Commission (MCC) announced the theme for Catechetical Sunday 2025: We can make the world a better place. The theme chosen for this year's celebration was announced earlier by Bishop Joseph Hii Teck Kwong, pic, Episcopal President of the Malaysian Catechetical Commission (MCC). Rooted in St Paul's exhortation to the Philippians (Phil 2:4) and Jesus' commandment to 'love one another' (Jn 13:34), the theme serves as a powerful invitation for Catholics to live out their faith in ways that impact both people and the planet. The theme reflects a growing emphasis within the Church on promoting social justice and environmental stewardship through catechesis and formation at all levels. 'As Christians, we are called to do our part to make the world a better place,' said Bishop Joseph in his message to the faithful. 'This involves addressing root causes of poverty, inequality, and violence, and promoting systemic change through political engagement, fair labour practices, and care for the environment.' Bishop Joseph also underscored the urgency of environmental stewardship, citing Pope Francis' Laudato Si' as a rallying call for collective action to address climate change and ecological degradation. Education and catechesis, he emphasised, play a vital role in shaping individuals who will rise to meet these challenges. 'Education begins at home,' Bishop Joseph said. 'Parents are the first catechists to their children, and they, along with parishes, BECs, Catholic institutions, and organisations, must help equip the next generation to face the challenges of our times.' To assist parishes in celebrating Catechetical Sunday, the MCC has distributed a range of resources, including the Catechetical Sunday Message, Rite of Commissioning for Catechists, e-Poster, and a Catechetical Sunday Kit. These materials are designed not only for use today but also throughout the month of August to promote deeper reflection and engagement. This year's celebration also marks a shift in the Church's liturgical calendar: Catechetical Sunday has officially moved from the fourth Sunday of January to the first Sunday of August, following a directive issued by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Malaysia on October 7, 2024. Bishop Joseph concluded his message with a note of gratitude to all those involved in the ministry of catechesis: 'On behalf of the Bishops of Malaysia, I extend my deepest gratitude to parish priests, catechetical coordinators, catechists, parents, guardians, and all involved in this ministry. May Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, lead and guide us.' As the Church in Malaysia observes Catechetical Sunday 2025, it does so with renewed purpose — to form disciples who not only know the faith, but live it courageously and compassionately, for the good of the Church, society, and creation.

MCC launches eco-initiatives at Bario's Pesta Nukenen 2025

Yii (second right) takes part in the opening gimmick of Pesta Nukenen 2025. MIRI (July 26): Miri City Council (MCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development in the Kelabit Highlands, unveiling a range of initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, waste management and eco-tourism across the region. Speaking at the opening ceremony of Pesta Nukenen 2025 in Bario, Miri mayor Adam Yii highlighted the council's commitment to development that harmonizes with cultural values and environmental preservation. 'These principles are deeply woven into your way of life, and they fit perfectly with MCC's vision of building sustainable villages and resilient communities,' Yii said. A major project introduced was the Plasma Pyrolysis system, also known as the Asher machine, which uses solar energy to convert waste into ash, providing an eco-friendly solution to waste disposal. Yii, who is also the Pujut assemblyman, emphasised the project's alignment with Sarawak's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy, particularly in promoting renewable energy and responsible rural development. In addition to embracing green technology, MCC is collaborating with the Bario community on beautification and tourism-related efforts. Projects include the development of Bario Community Park and Memorial Park to enhance the area's appeal for locals and visitors alike. Another initiative, Ngeribed Bawang, aims to cultivate native flowers, trees and traditional plants across villages, supported by MCC's plan to establish a dedicated nursery to conserve rare and endangered species. 'We see Bario as a potential model village for eco-tourism, supported by public cleanliness, maintenance and expanded infrastructure,' Yii stressed. In preparation for Pesta Nukenen, MCC allocated RM80,000 for local enhancement works, including grass-cutting, road and drain maintenance, and repainting shop lots. Beyond Bario, infrastructure upgrades continue across the highlands under the Inisiatif Kemudahan Rakyat (IKR) through 2025. 'These projects are essential to improving rural connectivity, strengthening local infrastructure and supporting long-term community needs,' Yii said. He added that six acres of land have been allocated for the development of new shop lots, creating opportunities for local entrepreneurship and economic growth. To ensure that local voices guide development efforts, a Bario Sub-District Task Force has also been established. Yii credited the community leaders, volunteers and residents for their continued efforts in preserving Bario's unique traditions. 'I am confident Bario will continue to flourish, remaining a beacon of tradition, resilience, and natural beauty,' he said. Bario Miri City Council Pesta Nukenen

Sarawak Day car-free event draws over 400 in Bintulu

Pang joins participants in an aerobics session during the Sarawak Day edition of the BCFM. BINTULU (July 19): More than 400 people took part in the Sarawak Day edition of the Bintulu Car-Free Morning (BCFM) held at Tanjung Batu Beach here today. The event kicked off with an aerobics session, followed by a plogging activity and a Fun Hunt Run. Participants of all ages also enjoyed traditional games and various family-friendly activities throughout the morning. Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang, who joined the event, said programmes such as BCFM should continue in the coming months as they promote a healthy lifestyle and foster community engagement. 'BCFM is a meaningful initiative that benefits both the physical and mental well-being of the community. It provides a positive platform for people to come together and stay active,' he said. A symbolic marker was also placed to designate a 5-kilometre route, which will serve as a permanent feature for future BCFM events. Pang expressed hope that the dedicated route will encourage more members of the public — including children, students, youths and senior citizens — to take up jogging and cycling regularly. He also extended his appreciation to all parties involved, especially Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), the main organiser of the event. 'I'm pleased to take part in today's BCFM. It not only promotes a healthy lifestyle, but also helps reduce carbon emissions and supports our vision for a Low Carbon Industrial Hub by 2030,' he added.
