Meet the North Yorkshire woman who restores garden gnomes

BBC News30-04-2025
It sounds like the start of a fairytale - at the end of a country garden, there's a hut full of little men in brightly coloured clothes, looking a little shabby around the edges. They're all here, patiently waiting for a summer makeover from Caroline Smale, Great Ouseburn's gnome restorer, who is happy to give them a fresh lick of paint for free. It's little more than a month before the North Yorkshire village's annual Garden Festival, and residents are keen to give their garden gnomes some much-needed TLC. "I help get the gnomes into the best possible shape. I don't mind being known as doing daft things, as a bit of a quirky person. It's just a bit of fun," says Caroline of her restoration service.
Hidden among the pots and plants in the garden is her own collection of around 40 figurines in different shapes and sizes. Caroline and her husband started to receive gnomes as presents from friends as "a bit of a joke" but over the years, they've become an important fixture of village life. One has the job of mascot for the ladies' garden golf team, while others are involved in a long-running, and yet unresolved, mystery."It hasn't happened for a year or so, but the gnomes used to disappear and end up in someone else's garden and I'd have to go and collect them."I have a suspect but he will only say the gnomes followed him. But I always know where they are. A gnome will always come home."The restoration workshop was launched last year after she posted on the Great Ouseburn Facebook page, which is the place that "all the mad things that go on in the village" get advertised, according to Caroline.
She was "quite surprised" by the response to her offer."It's been great because I've met loads of new people in the village; there are always people moving in that you don't know."Then they'll come round to the festival, so it works really well to raise interest, make money for the village and have a great day."Making sure to document the before and after, Caroline restores each gnome to its former glory, taking up to two days to finish each one. Her only request is that gnome-owners make a donation to the Great Ouseburn Garden Festival fund. The annual event sees residents open their gardens for the public to explore, alongside food stalls, performing choirs and classic car displays.
Caroline will soon be hard at work painting in preparation for this year's event, which takes place on 1 June. This time her services have even been promoted on the festival's event page, meaning she could be busier than ever. However despite the steady stream of gnomes in need of a makeover, she doesn't think the village is under any threat of being overrun. "I don't think we've got any more than average – but I think maybe we've got a little more interest," she adds."It's just good fun. The gnome painting workshop is now open in my summerhouse. People can come round, drop their gnomes off and come back and collect them later, all spruced up."

Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Chloe says that she was drugged and kidnapped in Italy 3 Chloe appeared on Lorraine to speak about the traumatic experience Credit: Shutterstock Editorial When the model was 21, she was drugged and kidnapped after travelling to Milan, Italy, for a photoshoot. Upon arriving at the "studio" on that day in 2017, she was driven to a remote warehouse in Truin by Lukasz Herba. Herba was a 30-year-old comuter programmer from Oldbury, West Midlands, who held Chloe hostage for a week. He was eventually arrested and jailed for his crime. However, in a new documentary, Chloe revealed that the horror from the kidnapping "never ends". Despite Herba being jailed for kidnapping her, the model revealed that she still faces backlash online for speaking out about his crime. Some trolls even accused her of making the entire story up. Chloe said: "It is always people who don't know the facts, they judge too quickly and jump in before knowing the full story. "You can never get offended by it really because they don't know." The star later appeared on Lorraine to promote the documentary, where she opened up more about how the doubters made her feel. She said: "I thought it would be easy, I am really not good at talking about my feelings. "I had to relive it again and I got emotional about things I hadn't before." On the ITV chat show, she also spoke about how she responded to the backlash. Chloe said: "I was constantly having to talk about his crazy decisions as if they were my own. "It was my calmness that saved me." More to follow... Much-loved Instagram feature is no longer available to millions after overnight

Meta has removed a popular function from Instagram for millions of users. Instagram Live was introduced in 2016, allowing anyone to broadcast an hour-long video stream to their followers or a room of three guests. But Meta, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp, quietly updated its rules last month to restrict who can go live. Instagram's Help Center states: 'Only Instagram users who have a public account with 1,000 followers or more will be able to start a Live broadcast.' Now, users who don't have public accounts and have fewer than 1,000 followers will be greeted by a pop-up when they try to go live. 'Your account is no longer eligible to go Live,' it says. Around one in four Instagram users have fewer than 1,000 followers. With some 2billion monthly users, this amounts to about 250million people. Social media experts have criticised the move, saying that the shift will likely impact smaller content creators, aspiring influencers and regular people who use the feature to chat with close friends. Media consultant Chad Teixeira told Metro: 'For smaller creators and aspiring influencers, it's a bit of a bittersweet change. 'Live was a fun, casual way to connect without overthinking, perfect for showing personality and building those first loyal followers. 'Now, it's all about hitting that magic 1,000 before you can beam yourself out in real time. Think of it as Instagram nudging you to focus on Reels, Stories, and Collabs first, then unlocking Live later. 'It's not the end of the road for breakout stars, just a shift in the journey. Creators can still grow by leaning into short, snackable content, jumping into collaborations, and building community in DMs and comments.' One said on X: 'Can't go live cause I don't have 1,000 followers, b***h, I don't even like 1,000 people.' Becky added: 'Can't do live videos on Instagram anymore without 1,000 followers, what the actual f**k, that's so unfair, I only have 118 followers.' A user who said they often do live streams of themselves playing games said their most recent broadcast was 'prob my last'. 'I enjoyed just popping in once in a while and not feeling the pressure other apps force on you,' they added. The social network did not give a reason for the change when approached by TechCrunch, other than to 'improve the overall Live consumption experience'. Teixeira said Meta may have to 'reduce spam and align with other platforms' thresholds'. More Trending The rule brings Instagram's live feature more in line with TikTok's as the short-form video app also requires users to have 1,000 followers or more. YouTube, meanwhile, only asks channels to have 50 subscribers or more to go live. Meta has been approached for comment. In a second picture, Colin appears with Kris Marshall, who plays lead detective Humphrey Goodman. This time, he appears seemingly in full costume, wearing a green gilet over his checked shirt while clutching what appears to be gardening gloves. Meanwhile, Kris was casually attired in a white vest, navy trousers, and brown shoes as they wandered about the filming location. ‌ The fan who shared the snap cheekily observed: "Kris in his best togs," according to the Express. While the behind-the-scenes shots thrilled viewers, some eagle-eyed supporters quickly noticed a fascinating connection—Colin had previously appeared in Death in Paradise. ‌ Colin starred in the sixth episode of Death in Paradise's fourth series, playing the character Anton Burrage, where Kris's DI Goodman and his colleagues were tasked with investigating a volleyball player's murder. Supporters on the page were quick to acknowledge the reunion, with one noting: "Looks like Selwyn's volleyball friend from Death in Paradise with him. "Mr Barrage," another chimed in. ‌ A different fan expressed their fondness for the actor accompanying Kris, saying, "Oh, I like the actor with him. He's usually really posh or very bad. "The guy with Kris was with him in DIP, too. In the volleyball episode," pointed out another. In other news, Colin has been bestowed with an honorary degree from Loughborough University. The 63-year-old British thespian, scribe, and producer, famed for his portrayal of Gillian B. Loeb in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy, was honoured by his alma mater for his "outstanding contributions to the arts and his role in championing men's health issues."
