Mahajan Commission report on Karnataka-Maharashtra border row is final, asserts H.K. Patil
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil has said that there was no reason for Kannadigas to be concerned over cases pertaining to the Karnataka-Maharashtra border row before the Supreme Court, as it was a constitutional issue and no decision yet had been taken on taking up the case for hearing.
He was chairing a meeting of Kannada organisations at in Belagavi on Saturday.
'The language row is a poll issue in Maharashtra. So there is no need to panic over it. Honouring the federal system in the country, Karnataka accepted the formation of Mahajan Commission. Our stand is that the commission's report is the sole solution to the border row. You have to accept the report, otherwise the status quo should continue. This is our government's firm stand,' he said.
The Minister said the bonhomie between Kannadigas and Marathi-speaking people is a model to the whole nation. Those who rake up language row should understand it and keep quiet, he said.
He said that steps would be taken to address the injustice being caused to Kannadigas in Goa and the issue would also be raised with the Union government.
On cases against Kannada activists, he said that certain procedures would have to be followed and the attention of the concerned persons would be drawn towards it.
Steps would also be taken to strengthen Kannada schools in the border areas by holding a detailed discussion with the Education Minister on the issue with a delegation from Belagavi, he said.
Representatives of various Kannada organisations aired their grievances and contentious issues and also gave suggestions. Various legislators and senior officials were present.

SC quashes FIR against Telugu actor Mohan Babu and his son in 2019 student protest case
In a major relief to Telugu actor-producer Mohan Babu and his son Vishnu Manchu, the Supreme Court on Thursday quashed a criminal case registered against them in a 2019 student protest in Tirupati over fee reimbursement. 'A reading of the FIR (First Information Report) and the charge-sheet neither discloses any act committed or illegal commission that caused common injury, danger, annoyance to the public or any section of the public or interference with their public rights, nor do they disclose any voluntary obstruction to a person that prevents them from proceeding in any direction that they have a right to proceed in," said the two-judge bench of the top court, headed by Justice BV Nagarathna and including Justice KV Viswanathan, in their verdict. The SC quashed the FIR against the father-son duo after finding that the offences invoked against the accused were not made out in the case. "The appellants (Babu and Vishnu) were exercising their right to freedom of speech and expression and to assemble peacefully," the court said. As per the prosecution case, ahead of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh in 2019, Babu and his son along with others had held a rally along the Tirupati-Madanapalli road and raised slogans against the state government for not granting student fee reimbursements. They were booked on a complaint made by the person in charge of the Model Code of Conduct Team-IV, Chandragiri assembly constituency. In January this year, the Andhra Pradesh High Court refused to quash the proceedings in the case, forcing the father-son duo to knock the doors of the top court seeking relief in the case.

Amartya Sen opposes detention of Bengal's migrant workers in other states
KOLKATA: Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Thursday spoke against the detention of hundreds of migrant workers from West Bengal in states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha and Delhi on the suspicion that they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen (HT FILE PHOTO/Samir Jana) 'This issue is not related only to Bengal. India is a democratic nation. We will object if any Indian from any state is tortured or neglected in another state,' Sen, who lives in the US, told reporters after reaching 'Pratichi,' his ancestral home at Santiniketan in West Bengal's Birbhum district. Since most detainees have alleged that they were singled out only because they speak Bengali, Sen focused on the language. 'Bengali has a historic value. Great men like Rabindranath Tagore and Nazrul Islam gave us priceless gifts in this language. The heritage of the language cannot be ignored,' he said. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party on this issue, alleging that Bengali-speaking people were being branded as Bangladeshis for political reasons in the run-up to the 2026 state assembly polls. 'Nobody should panic. It is our duty to protect citizens. If BJP thinks this is how it can delete the names of genuine voters and win elections, as it did in Delhi and Maharashtra, then it is making a big mistake,' Banerjee said in Kolkata on July 22. Her party, the Trinamool Congress, has launched a year-long Bhasha Andolan (language movement).
