Clinton High School's culinary team ranks fourth in national culinary competition

The team comprised of nine students from Clinton High School represented Mississippi in early May.
'To make it to fourth place and get to go up on stage with these amazing sponsors and give the kids to be in the national spotlight was incredible for them,' said Catherine Bruce, Chef Instructor at Clinton High School.
It's been a culmination of hard work over the years, climbing from 29th place in 2023, placing 18th in 2024 to this year finishing fourth in the nation.
Students prepared a three-course meal in just one hour. Their menu featured staples from the Delta to the Coast, starting off with crab croquettes, serving up Gulf redfish for the entree and to top it off a Mississippi mud cake.
In a first for the program, four students competed in the restaurant management competition.

Two Mississippi students recognized at National History Day 2025 contest
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WJTV) – Two Mississippi students were recognized with the Senior Mississippi Outstanding Affiliate Award during the National History Day 2025 contest, held in College Park, Maryland. According to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH), Phoebe Jones and Michael Taquino, both Starkville High School students, received the award on June 12. The Outstanding Affiliate award recognizes the quality and dedication of both the students and the teachers who guide them. Mississippi airports receive $3.1 million for improvements 'All our student contestants represented Mississippi, well,' said Bently Cochran, coordinator of the Mississippi History Day program at MDAH. 'Their achievement in the national competition is the result of their hard work on the projects and rigorous history instruction in school classrooms.' The Mississippi students were among more than 3,000 contest participants from the United States, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, Department of Defense schools in the Atlantic, China and Korea. National report praises Mississippi's preschool standards
JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippi received national recognition for developing its youngest students in new research. The state went from being ranked the second-worst state in 2013 for fourth-grade reading to 21st in 2022. A report from the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) suggested that recent education gains may not have been a fluke. NIEER announced that Mississippi was one of five states that met all 10 of its benchmarks for preschool. Mississippi receives its highest-ranking ever in KIDS COUNT report The benchmarks relate to a plethora of factors, including teacher education, class size, classroom monitoring and education standards. The state funds two preschool programs: state-funded pre-kindergarten and the Early Learning Collaborative program. Additionally, Mississippi was one of 10 states that increased preschool enrollment by more than 20%. Roughly a quarter of all preschool-aged children are in a state-run preschool, according to NIEER. The state has historically had a checkered past with education. The federal government forced Mississippi to desegregate schools 16 years after Brown v. Board of Education ordered schools to do so in 1954. Though graduation rates are among the highest nationally, standardized testing scores for college admission are still among the lowest. Still, the recognition from NIEER does not appear to be isolated. The 2025 KIDS COUNT Data Book ranked Mississippi with the 16th best education ranking nationally. Mississippi receives its highest-ranking ever in KIDS COUNT report
JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippi's education ranking has climbed to 16th in the nation, according to the 2025 KIDS COUNT Data Book. This is the state's highest-ranking ever. KIDS COUNT ranked Mississippi 30th in education in 2024, 32nd in 2023 and 39th in 2022. The state was ranked 48th in 2014. Over the past decade, the statewide graduation rate has risen from 75% to 89.2%, higher than the national average. USM launches Mississippi Center for Apprenticeships and Residency in Education The 2025 KIDS COUNT Data Book is a 50-state report of data developed by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, analyzing how children and youth are faring across the nation. Each year, the Data Book presents national and state data from 16 indicators in four domains — economic well-being, education, health, and family and community factors — and ranks the states according to how children are faring overall. Mississippi ranks 48th in overall child well-being. 'Mississippi's momentum in education is the result of strong policies and dedicated, effective educators,' said Dr. Lance Evans, state superintendent of education. 'Our students' achievements have made the state a national leader in improving academic outcomes. I am tremendously proud that our national ranking for education has steadily climbed from 48th in 2014 to 16th in 2025. Mississippi students have proven once again that there is no limit to what they can accomplish with the strong support of Mississippi educators.'
