A Brazilian book influencer and travel agent has been tragically killed in a horrific stabbing incident.
Tais Bruna de Castro, 36, was having lunch on Monday, June 2, at the Beco Fino shopping centre in the Jundiaí neighbourhood of São Paulo when she was was stabbed to death.

Without warning, the knifeman launched a frenzied knife attack, stabbing Bruna more than 20 times in front of shocked bystanders. Claudio Elizeu, a 40-year-old cleaner at the same complex, was arrested at the scene, CNN Brazil reports.

According to local police, Elizeu, who was employed as a janitor at the mall, told investigators that he killed Tais because she had no interest in pursuing a relationship with him. Authorities say there is no evidence that the two shared a close personal relationship.

After the stabbing, Elizeu allegedly broke into an office inside the shopping centre, where he smashed windows and furniture before police arrested him, the Daily Mail reports.
Bruna was declared dead at the scene. The case is being investigated under the country's femicide protocol, with her senseless killing being just another example of the high levels of gender-based violence in Latin America.
Bruna was well known among literary circles online. She ran a blog titled Reader Fashion , where she shared book recommendations, literary commentary, and engaged with a growing community of followers. She also worked as a travel agent in the same shopping centre where the attack took place.
Following her death, Bruna's family posted a heartfelt message on her Instagram account, which had over 8,000 followers, thanking her audience for their support and honouring her passion for literature.

"This week, our dear Tais Bruna, the owner of this profile, left us in a very sad and unbelievable way," the post read. "'Reader Fashion' was one of her greatest joys. Talking about books, recommending new reads, and interacting with you brought light into her days. We, her family, sincerely thank you for the messages and prayers. Tais, we will love you forever."
Her death is part of a disturbing trend of violence against women, particularly influencers and public figures, in Latin America.

Just weeks before Bruna's murder, Colombian model and influencer María José Estupiñán, 22, was shot at point-blank range by a gunman disguised as a delivery driver. The shooting occurred outside her home in the northeastern city of Cúcuta, and was captured on chilling CCTV footage. Her mother can be heard screaming, 'No, not my daughter!' as the gunman fled the scene.
In another recent case, Mexican TikTok star and beautician Valeria Márquez, 23, was gunned down while live streaming from her salon, Blossom the Beauty Lounge, in the state of Jalisco. The graphic footage shows her looking out the window moments before gunshots rang out, striking her in the chest and head.
These incidents have sparked renewed calls for more robust protections for women and public figures in the region. Advocacy groups continue to demand urgent action from governments to address the systemic violence that disproportionately targets women, both online and offline.

Police were locking him up virtually every week and his loving parents, Danny and Elaine, had almost given up on the lost soul. ‌ But then he started going to fighter and community activist Steven France's Made 4 The Cage gym in Sunderland. Aaron is just one of many forgotten lads from a city ravaged by cuts and austerity whose lives have been turned around at the mixed martial arts gym. Aaron and Steven's stories of growth, discovery and redemption – along with those of Sam, Faiz and Lennon – feature in Poised, a powerful documentary being tipped for Oscar success. ‌ ‌ Aaron said: 'I was a bit feral. Honestly, I was like a street dog. If you got too close to us, said the wrong thing, straight away I was going at you.' He said the gym is 'the best therapy I've ever been to in my life'. Steven, 46, is battling the poverty and hopelessness, helping the next generation avoid the same traps that almost consumed him. He reached a junction in his own life 20 years ago when his father killed himself. He said: 'I had to say to myself, the writing's on the wall. The odds are not good. There's people around you who are going to prison for a long time. The way they were already coming to a dead end in their life at such a young age. We're thrown on the scrapheap. Your options are very slim, work at Nissan or a call centre. I'm grateful for those places but if you do have ambition it's hard.' Steven found solace in MMA and went on to become a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and an England coach in the sport. He said: 'It transformed my life and it's doing the same with these young lads. It's about me trying to get people from troubled, difficult backgrounds. Getting these kids, with some complex issues, to stick to what is the hardest sport. The main thing about MMA is discipline. You forget about everything because you haven't got time to think about anything else. It's that intense.' He added that the sport humbles people and is a powerful tool in the fight against violence. ‌ Aaron, 20, said: 'In 2020, I was at rock bottom. Drugs, fighting, getting locked up. I was taking MDMA [ecstasy]. At 14, I did crack cocaine. I lost loads of weight. It got to the point where my hair was falling out, I was that stressed. I was scratching at my face all the time. I thought I either make a change now or I'm going to live like this until I die. I thought the only way I'll get out of this is if I rob a bank and get millions and move abroad. Or just kill myself. I was either gonna end up in prison or dead.' When he was linked up with Steven through Sunderland's Positive Steps programme in April 2022, Aaron was told to be at the gym each morning at 5am. It was the shock to the system he needed. 'Every day I used to wake up and think, what on earth have I got myself into? I'm going there to get picked up, to get slammed back on the floor, to get picked back up, to get slammed back on the floor. It wasn't even physically draining, it was mentally draining. But over time you build a strong wall. ‌ 'It takes all your pain and all your past trauma away because all you're thinking about is fighting. Once you're at rock bottom there's only one way to go and that's up and this kind of sport will help you get there. Those who've got inner anger and just need a release, this is the best thing I've ever done that's helped me.' Aaron now works at events space The Point in Sunderland and wants to become cabin crew for Emirates. He is one of many lads who have been helped by Steven's programme. ‌ Sam, 25, spiralled into nefarious activities after losing his mum to kidney failure... until he found salvation in mixed martial arts. Steven said he was banished from Newcastle by his family and moved to Sunderland where his dad lived. 'Sam spent three months in his bedroom. His mental health was not good. And then he came across me and the rest is history,' Steven added. Sam and his brother now own a demolition firm which works across the country. Faiz, 20, left Iraq because of death threats and persecution. He walked from Minsk in Belarus to Calais and has had no contact with his family since. Steven said: 'Faiz talks about how hard it is to get to Britain as an asylum seeker. He was 14 and licking leaves to get water. Now he's got a full-time job, drives a BMW, got his own house. He doesn't do any martial arts now but it's fantastic he's part of society. He's a taxpayer.' Lennon was just 14 when he joined the gym to escape the streets. ‌ The film also highlights a 78% cut to the area's youth services in recent years, leaving people like Steven to plug the gaps. His project itself was nearly scrapped when funding was not available. He said: 'The money I get literally just keeps the project running. I feel like the North – and especially the North East – gets left behind. We're left up here to defend ourselves. We are the forgotten part of the world.' Steven hopes Poised will show the need for better investment in youth services. He said: 'Prevention's got to be better than cure.' Poised was celebrated at last month's Raindance Festival, where it was nominated for Best Documentary Feature and Best Cinematography. That means it now qualifies for British Independent Film Awards selection, which could take it all the way to the Oscars. 'I'm really trying to help other young people," said Steven. "There'll be other Stevens, other Sams, other Aarons. There'll be hundreds, if not thousands, of them across the country. Through me doing this film, we can try to make a difference.' He has certainly made a difference to Aaron's life. He said: 'I was watching the ­documentary and I seen my younger self and I just thought he didn't deserve it. I just wanted to give him a big hug through the screen. When I look back, I really did not think I was gonna make it past 16. I thought I'd have been dead or in prison. I think I would have if it wasn't for Steven. He showed me what I can do with my life.'

There are fears Ghazal could do the same to remain in Britain. Ms Kanjo, 33, was murdered in January 2021, having apparently got married just four months earlier. Her death sparked a national debate in Lebanon about domestic abuse. Ms Kanjo had filed domestic violence and fraud cases against her new husband and was trying to divorce him when she was killed, according to reports. Lebanese channel Al Jadeed broadcast an audio recording in which he allegedly admitted to the murder. Speaking to Ms Kanjo's sister, the person says: "I didn't want to, I didn't want her to die, when she was screaming, I just put my hand on her mouth." Ghazal is understood to have travelled through Greece, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. He was arrested in December 2022 in Stokholm under Interpol's red notice. However, Swedish laws prevented him from being extradited back home where he said he faced execution, and when he was detained again in Germany, the same thing happened, according to Ms Kanjo's lawyer Ashraf Al-Moussawi. Mr Al-Moussawi has pointed out Lebanon has not carried out an execution since 1994 and so this should not have been used as a defence. He added the alleged killer then "wandered Europe until his recent arrest in England". The lawyer has urged the British government to find a way to send Ghazal back to his homeland to face justice. Ms Kanjo's dad Mohammed claims his daughter's husband had sneaked back into Lebanon to attend his cousin's wedding a year after his wife's death. "After all this time, I'm left wondering if justice will ever be served," he told the Mail. "It's like something is missing from your body, something that is not replaceable. "I honestly hope he's not handed over to Lebanese authorities only to be imprisoned and then released again." He added perhaps the UK legal system can "find a way to properly punish him". Ghazal was detained by Border Force and jailed at Gloucester Crown Court last Wednesday after admitting to entering the country unlawfully. A Government spokesman said: "The Home Office never comments on whether extradition requests have or have not been received, and it is also our longstanding policy not to comment on individual cases. "However, we will always do everything in our power to remove serious foreign criminals from the UK so they are not left free on our streets after completing their sentence." Oasis ticket scam: ‘My Instagram was hijacked for a £1,400 fraud'

Lauren Jones* was on her way home from a gig when she realised something was wrong. After having no reception all day, her mobile started pinging with message after message containing verifications for her LinkedIn, Vinted and Facebook accounts. Someone was trying to get in and change the contact details. At home she realised the hackers were also trying to take over her Instagram account. She tried to sort it out but it was late, she had work the next day and, she says: 'I thought: 'What damage could they do?'' Within 24 hours she knew the answer: using her account, the hackers advertised tickets to Oasis's Wembley Stadium gig on Saturday 26 July and stole £1,400 from her unsuspecting friends. They then sent a text demanding $100 (£75) to return the Instagram account. All day she was fielding messages from contacts. 'I had about 20 different people text, saying they were about to send over the money and can I hold the tickets for them,' she says. 'The hackers had impersonated me so well that my friends and family genuinely thought they were speaking to me.' Three weeks later, she is still locked out of her account, and Instagram has refused to recognise it as being fraudulent. It has ignored her requests for help. It did not respond to Guardian Money's requests for comment. Jones is a music fan and so the Instagram story offering four tickets to a concert did not seem out of place to her 600 followers – even her sister believed she had tickets to sell. 'I've just returned from Glastonbury and I was away for Bruce Springsteen,' she says. 'It's not as if they'd taken it over and started advertising bitcoin.' The people who responded via Instagram were taken in by the scammers' replies – one friend told her he thought they had been having a good catchup. It was only those who moved the conversation to WhatsApp or texts who found out pretty swiftly that the tickets did not exist. 'They're really impersonating me and it's so invasive,' she says. 'It's distressing not knowing what is being said in my name.' The fraudsters did not just leave the post for Jones's followers to see – they messaged one of her former colleagues and asked them if they would share the posts. They agreed and inadvertently spread the scam more widely. The tickets were realistically priced and the post had good spelling and grammar. Victims were asked to pay into an account held with the online bank Revolut, with the fraudsters explaining that it was in the name of the friend who had originally bought the tickets. Official data shows £1.6m was lost to fraud involving gig tickets last year – more than double the previous year's figure – and Oasis's high-profile reunion tour has been widely used to lure victims. Earlier this year, Lloyds Banking Group (which includes Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland) said more than 1,000 customers had fallen for scams linked to the Manchester band's eagerly anticipated UK concerts. Lloyds said its data suggested that UK Oasis fans had lost more than £2m to fraudsters by March this year – the total is likely to have risen since. It found that fans lost an average of £436 each – about £200 more than the average amount stolen in a concert ticket scam – and said some had handed over more than £1,700. Chris Ainsley, the head of fraud risk management at the bank Santander, recently saw a Facebook account used for the scam – the post advertised four tickets, again for the 26 July concert, and included details of seat numbers and a WhatsApp number to contact. The scammers used the highlight tool to put it in front of the real account holder's followers – this, Ainsley says, is a way to make a fraud 'grow very quickly'. His team searched Facebook and found multiple other accounts had posted the same message, suggesting the same people had hacked them all. Jake Moore, a cybersecurity expert at ESET, says that by using Instagram and Facebook accounts linked to individuals, scammers give victims a false sense of security. 'It's not an Oasis Facebook group which is completely random – buying tickets there would be a complete gamble. Instead, they're buying from people they know, or friends of friends – they're verified. It's doing exactly what we tell people to do,' he says. 'The scammers can check the messages before and see how you sign off – if it's a kiss or emoji maybe – and replicate that.' Moore says criminals who may be worried about their spelling or grammar giving them away can use AI to craft their messages. 'Even if you take an extra minute to reply, the other person is not going to notice – you can even tell it to sign off each one with a smiley face, for instance.' You might think the criminals would carefully select accounts that give them the best chance of finding victims – Jones's would have appealed because she loves live music – but the experts say that the fraud is not that sophisticated. Ainsley says the account he originally saw compromised had not been used since 2011, so anyone doing some due diligence might have taken that as a red flag. Moore says it is simply a numbers game, with criminals breaking into as many accounts as they can. Jones is not sure how the hackers got into her account but suspects she may have fallen victim to a phishing attack or used an insecure public wifi network. Moore says that often accounts are compromised because people use the same password in more than one place. Criminals will try the details across a range of sites – a practice known as 'credentials stuffing'. In-app attacks are another way for fraudsters to get the details they need, Ainsley says. 'Sometimes you will get a message that makes it look like you have been kicked off Facebook – it will ask for your details to log you back in,' he says. The best way to protect your account is to use the social media website's two-factor authentication or two-step verification settings. 'That extra layer will push the criminals to the next account – you are not the lowest hanging fruit,' Moore says. * Name has been changed
