Bulgaria becomes 21st member to adopt euro after EU green light
Bulgaria's switch from the lev to the euro comes nearly 19 years after the country of 6.4 million people joined the European Union.
"We did it!" Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov said.
"We thank all institutions, partners and everyone whose efforts made this landmark moment possible. The government remains committed to a smooth and effective transition to the euro in the interest of all citizens," Jeliazkov said on X.
In adopting the legal texts necessary for the move, EU finance ministers officially set the euro at 1.95583 Bulgarian lev.
"Joining the euro area is much more than just about replacing lev with euro. It is about building a brighter and more prosperous future for Bulgaria and its citizens at the heart of Europe," EU economy chief Valdis Dombrovskis said after the approval.
"The euro will bring new opportunities, investments, jobs and growth," he said.
The European Commission last month said the EU's poorest country had fulfilled the strict conditions to adopt the euro, while the European Central Bank (ECB) also gave a positive opinion.
Bulgaria's journey to joining the eurozone has had a stormy political backdrop with seven elections in three years -- the last in October 2024.
But recent polls show Bulgarian society remains divided on the euro, with experts attributing the scepticism largely to fears of rising prices and declining purchasing power.
President Rumen Radev shocked many when he proposed holding a referendum on the matter but that was given short shrift by the Bulgarian parliament.
Since June, protesters have gathered in Sofia to call for "keeping the Bulgarian lev". A symbolic protest camp with several tents has been set up near the presidency and the Bulgarian National Bank in the capital.
Far-right opposition parties have used the issue to promote anti-EU narratives.
Proponents in Bulgaria, however, insist the move will help improve the country's economy, and reinforce its ties to the West and protect against Russia's influence.
"The political benefits are becoming increasingly significant, as the protests against the euro seem to bear the mark of the Kremlin," 43-year-old musician Veselin Dimitrov told AFP in Sofia.
The green light comes as the euro has been gaining in value against the US dollar as President Donald Trump's protectionist trade policies shake trust in the US currency.
Only 12 countries were part of the single currency area -- including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Greece -- when the first euro bills and coins were rolled out on Jan 1, 2002.
It gradually widened with Slovenia joining in 2007, Cyprus and Malta in 2008, Slovakia in 2009, Estonia in 2011, Latvia in 2014 then Lithuania in 2015.
Croatia was the last country to join in 2023, bringing the total to 20.
Bulgaria wanted to adopt the euro sooner but Brussels judged its inflation was too high to meet the necessary criteria.
EU states that want to join the single currency must demonstrate that their economy has converged with other eurozone countries and that they have their finances under control.
The conditions include holding inflation to no more than 1.5 percentage points higher than the rate of the three best-performing EU countries.
When Brussels gave its backing in June, it said Bulgaria's average inflation rate during the 12 months to April 2025 was 2.7 per cent, just below the needed level. - AFP

‘Asean has global trust'
Jovial moment: Mohamad attending the Asean Post-Ministerial Conference with the European Union. — Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: Asean has emerged as a trusted platform by global superpowers and countries are 'queuing' up to sign up as partners to the regional group, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Foreign Minister said many countries want to be a partner of Asean by acceding to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation of Southeast Asia (TAC), so much so the grouping had to put a moratorium on it. 'Asean has the trust of global superpowers. We are known as a region of peace and good economic growth. 'Countries are lining up to sign the TAC as this is the first step of being a partner to Asean,' he said at a press conference at the conclusion of the Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting and Related Meetings yesterday. While the current practice is not to take new partners as dialogue partners, Mohamad said Asean is giving an exception to one or two countries to be a partner to the regional group. 'Some dialogue partners can bring added value to Asean. So, we are not too rigid in our moratorium,' added Mohamad. He said Algeria and Uruguay officially acceded to the TAC, marking their formal commitment to principles of peaceful cooperation and regional harmony. 'As of now, 57 countries have become parties to the TAC,' added Mohamad. He said 21 meetings involving Asean and its external partners were held at this meeting. Mohamad said he held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, Palestine, the Philippines, Switzerland, Turkiye, the United Kingdom, United States and Uruguay. He also stressed on the importance of maintaining neutrality as a trading nation. 'Our economy is based on trade. We cannot be seen as leaning toward anyone. The United States has the largest investment and China has been our largest trading partner for many years. 'We have to navigate our foreign policy so as not to be seen as leaning toward anyone,' he said. On the tariff issue, Mohamad said the United States prefers to hold negotiations separately with countries, and not as a group. 'Each country must negotiate for themselves. The United States seems more comfortable negotiating this way. 'We hope we will be able to negotiate well and decide on it fast,' added Mohamad. Malaysia, as Asean Chair, will once again host the regional summit – the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits in October. On another matter, Mohamad said Malaysia will fully enforce regulations pertaining to illegal ship-to-ship transfer of crude oil in Malaysian waters beginning this month, as per Cabinet decision. He said ships caught doing this will face fines and the vessels held. 'We do not want to be accused of being a country that facilitates these activities. We will defend our waters so such actions can be prevented,' Mohamad said. He acknowledged that there will be quarters upset with this policy, adding regardless, Malaysia will enforce the ruling.

Anwar meets leaders from seven countries
PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a series of bilateral meetings with senior leaders from seven countries, including China and Australia, where discussions centred around efforts to further strengthen ties. The meetings held at the Prime Minister's Office also involved representatives from Pakistan, Turkiye, Palestine, United Kingdom and European Union, who are here for the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Related Meetings. On his meeting with China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Prime Minister said both sides discussed various aspects of Malaysia-China ties, which continues to be strengthened following President Xi Jinping's visit to Malaysia in April. 'We explored efforts to narrow the trade gap and expand cooperation in the port, liquefied natural gas (LNG), water, digital economy and green technology sectors,' he said, Bernama reported. Anwar also expressed appreciation for China's support of Asean's Five-Point Consensus regarding the situation in Myanmar, reiterating the importance of a peaceful resolution to the South China Sea issue, in line with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). During his meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, the Prime Minister welcomed investors' interest in the smart manufacturing, digital economy, artificial intelligence and renewable energy sectors. 'Australia has also been invited to participate in the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) this September, in line with the halal economy's vast potential as a driver of future cooperation,' he said. In a meeting with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Anwar said discussions revolved around the upcoming official visit of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Malaysia, during which several memoranda of understanding are expected to be signed. The two leaders also explored potential cooperation in agriculture, particularly in rice trade, and exchanged views on regional and global developments, including Asean-Pakistan relations and the issue of Jammu and Kashmir. Anwar also received a courtesy call from Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, where he expressed interest in encouraging further investments in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, digital and green economy, artificial intelligence (AI) and aerospace. On his meeting with the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Anwar said the discussion focused on enhancing cooperation across various areas, including investment, energy transition, education, climate change, defence, digitalisation and AI. 'I also welcome increased UK investments, particularly in the semiconductor and green infrastructure sectors,' he said. The Prime Minister, who also met Palestinian Planning and International Cooperation Minister Dr Estephan Salameh, said Malaysia continues to strengthen its role in supporting the Palestinian people, particularly in the recovery and reconstruction of Gaza. On his meeting with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, Anwar said Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with the EU, which is currently Malaysia's fourth-largest trading partner, with total trade reaching US$47.93bil in 2024.
