In a major revamp aimed at improving its financial position, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) Pune division is set to discontinue operations on loss-making routes. This key decision is part of a broader route restructuring strategy to maximise revenue and operational efficiency. This restructuring comes in the wake of a white paper on MSRTC operations presented by Maharashtra Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik. Acting on the findings, the Pune division has begun evaluating its existing routes, focusing on profitability and demand.
Arun Siya, MSRTD Pune divisional controller, said, 'Loss-making routes are being identified and will be shut down. We are focusing on long-distance and revenue-generating routes by deploying more efficient CNG and electric buses.'
Currently, the Pune division manages 14 depots and 42 bus stations across the city and district, with a fleet of around 850 buses, including 64 electric 'Shivai' buses, 36 Volvo 'Shivshahi' luxury buses, and 200 CNG buses.
'A total of 70 new buses have already been deployed for long-distance services from various depots, and the remaining will be added in phases throughout the year. We are also preparing a revised timetable that prioritises high-demand routes while optimising costs related to driver-conductor wages, maintenance, and peak-season traffic,' said Siya.
In the financial year 2024-25, buses from Swargate and Shivajinagar depots alone generated ₹ 55 crore in monthly revenue. The goal is to raise this figure to ₹ 65 crore through this restructuring plan. 'This reorganisation is essential to reduce operational losses and enhance public service delivery. Non-viable routes will no longer be continued,' Siya added.

The strike threatens to disrupt essential supply chains, with heavy vehicle operators refusing to back down until the state government addresses their long-pending demands. A high-level meeting held at Mantralaya on Tuesday yielded no breakthrough. (HT) Passenger transporters, including school buses and private travel unions, have temporarily stayed out of the strike following an assurance from transport minister Pratap Sarnaik of a meeting with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis within two days. However, they have warned they will join the agitation if no resolution is reached. The strike, called by the Maharashtra State Goods and Passenger Transport Association, comes after failed negotiations with the state government. A high-level meeting held at Mantralaya on Tuesday yielded no breakthrough. 'With basic demands pending for over six weeks, the government has left us no choice,' said Baba Shinde, president of the association. 'We submitted a memorandum on June 16 and even observed a hunger strike at Azad Maidan till June 29. Despite assurances, nothing concrete has happened.' Shinde added that while the government reached out to school and private transporters, heavy goods operators received no direct communication. 'The strike will continue until our issues are resolved.' Among the key demands are simplification of transport regulations, clarity on toll collection mechanisms, and pending subsidies. The impact of the strike is already being felt. Disruptions in the supply of grains, vegetables, milk, flowers, and medicines are expected if the deadlock continues. Construction, infrastructure, and industrial activities, including Metro and Smart City projects, are also likely to suffer delays. Anil Garg, president of the Maharashtra School Bus Owners Association, said, 'We have given the government a 48-hour window. If the CM fails to act, school transporters across the state will join the protest. We stand in full solidarity with the heavy vehicle unions.' A meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is scheduled for later today (July 2) to address the transporters' concerns.

Passengers travelling over 150 km on Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses are now eligible for a 15 per cent fare cut if they book tickets in advance. The scheme, which is only for full-fare tickets and not for concessional tickets, was rolled out on Tuesday. According to the MSRTC, the scheme will be applicable all year round, except for peak seasons like Diwali and summer vacation. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who is also chairman of the MSRTC, initially announced the decision on June 1, which was the 77th foundation day of the transport corporation. The step is intended to promote advance booking and enhance operational planning during off-peak times. The reduction will apply to all kinds of buses operated by the MSRTC, but only for full-fare paying passengers. The scheme will also be implemented during the upcoming Ashadhi Ekadashi and Ganesh festival seasons. Passengers on ordinary MSRTC buses going to Pandharpur for Ashadhi Ekadashi and going to Konkan for the Ganesh festival can avail of the 15 per cent fare concession with advance booking. However, the concession will not be available for additional buses operated to meet festival demand. The e-Shivneri service, running between Pune and Mumbai, also falls under the scheme. To enjoy the facility, passengers need to book their tickets in advance either from MSRTC's booking counters, through the official website, or through the MSRTC app. Sarnaik has urged eligible passengers to avail of the scheme where possible. While the measure is aimed at encouraging planning and providing some travel cost relief, it will also enable the MSRTC to maximise its services during off-peak times.
