Afg suffer Ghazanfar blow ahead of CT
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the news on Wednesday, revealing that Ghazanfar sustained the injury during Afghanistan's tour of Zimbabwe late last year. He will be sidelined for at least four months and will continue to receive treatment during this time.
Ghazanfar had made a strong start to his ODI career, taking 21 wickets in 11 matches. He also featured in the UAE's ILT20 league with MI Emirates in January, following the Zimbabwe tour. However, he struggled to make an impact, claiming just one wicket from 7.1 overs in three games at an economy rate of 9.48.
In Ghazanfar's absence, 20-year-old left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote has been called up to the main squad. Kharote, who had been in the reserves, has played seven ODIs and six T20Is since his debut in March 2024. He last featured for Afghanistan in the ODI series against Bangladesh in Sharjah in November 2024, where he starred with figures of 3 for 28 in Afghanistan's victory in the second game.
Afghanistan still boasts a strong spin attack with the presence of Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, and Mohammad Nabi. However, they continue to miss out on Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who has been absent from the national team since the Zimbabwe tour. Mujeeb, who played the full SA20 season with Paarl Royals, has not featured for Afghanistan in ODIs since the 2023 World Cup and was not included in the original Champions Trophy squad. The ACB stated that Mujeeb will not play until he has fully recovered from his injury.
Afghanistan squad for ICC Champions Trophy: Hashmatullah Shahidi (captain), Ibrahim Zadran, Ikram Alikhil (wicket keeper), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wicket keeper), Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah (vice-captain), Azmatullah Omarzai, Gulbadin Naib, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Fareeh Ahmad, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Nangeyalia Kharote, Naveed Zadran, Noor Ahmad.

Too early to judge Gill and his young India team, says Dev
NEW DELHI: Former India captain Kapil Dev on Saturday said it is too early to judge new Test skipper Shubman Gill and his young team in England despite two defeats. Gill, 25, took over a team in transition after the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ahead of the five-Test tour of England. The visitors, who trail the series 2-1, lost the opener before they bounced back to level the series. They then went down in a closely-fought third Test at Lord's. Ben Stokes' England are in the box seat in the fourth Test and in sight of clinching the series. 'The team came close to winning (at Lord's) and then lost,' said Dev, who is the president of Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), on the sidelines of the announcement of the second half of the national golf calender. Stokes ends two-year wait for Test hundred before India collapse in fourth Test 'It's a new team and it is getting an opportunity. In the coming days, these boys will come back with tournament victories. 'Any new team needs time to adjust. The new captain has to learn a lot and this series will be a learning step (for him).' Gill, a top-order batter, leads the series batting with over 600 runs including three centuries and a career-best of 269 in the second Test in Birmingham. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been India's best bowler with 14 wickets in five innings despite the collective decision that he play just three Tests to manage his workload. Bumrah, a yorker specialist who bowls with an unusual slingshot action has more than 200 Test wickets in his injury-prone career of 48 Tests. But Dev, who never missed a Test due to injury in his 16-year-old career that ended in 1994 with 434 wickets, defended Bumrah's decision to skip matches. 'I think everybody is different,' the 1983 World Cup-winning captain told reporters. 'Times have changed, bodies are different and they are working differently. 'He is one of the finest bowlers we have. His action is so awkward, and to sustain it this far, I think it's fabulous. 'We never thought that someone would play so long (with this action) because he puts so much stress on his body. He is still delivering for the Indian team, hats off to him.' Dev said Indian golf is ready to take a leaf out of cricket's set up in India and expand with the PGTI securing new sponsors and increased prize money for tournaments.

PSB bars federations from competing in India without prior approval
The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has issued a fresh directive instructing all national sports federations to seek prior consultation and approval before participating in any sporting event held in India, citing prevailing security concerns. The decision was taken during the 34th meeting of the PSB Board held on July 23, 2025, PSB spokesperson Khuram Shahzad PSB told Business Recorder. A circular in this regard has also been issued, explicitly urging all national federations to strictly adhere to this directive. 'In view of the current security situation, no national federation shall make any commitment or agreement regarding participation in sports events in India without prior permission from PSB,' the circular reads. The development comes amid debate that whether Pakistan hockey team should travel to India for Men's Asia Cup Hockey tournament. Earlier this month, media reports suggested that Pakistan will not travel to India for upcoming hockey tournaments over 'security' concerns, potentially jeopardising their place in next year's World Cup. The nuclear-armed neighbours traded the worst violence in decades during a four-day conflict in May that killed 70 people. Pakistan was due to participate in the Men's Asia Cup for field hockey to be hosted by India in August and September, for which the federation had sought the government's clearance. 'After the recent war the security and safety of our hockey players will be at risk,' said a sports ministry source, who asked not to be identified. Pakistan will also not participate in the Junior World Cup in India in November, the source said. In May, national hockey team captain Imad Shakeel Butt had also called for the relocation of the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 from India, citing escalating political tensions between the two countries. 'The Asia Cup is crucial for us as it's a World Cup qualifying event. Given the current political situation between Pakistan and India, we believe the venue should be reconsidered,' he said.

Rizwan to lead Pak in ODIs against WI
Captain Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi must lift their game to bring success to Pakistan on the West Indies tour. PHOTO: AFP Wicket-keeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan will lead Pakistan in the three-match ODI series against West Indies as the Men's National Selection Committee named a 16-member ODI squad on Friday. The series will be played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad & Tobago on 8, 10 and 12 August. Right-handed batter Hasan Nawaz is the only uncapped player in the ODI squad, while Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi are part of the ODI squad. Pakistan will also play three T20Is against the West Indies, scheduled on 31 July, 2 and 3 August, at the Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill, USA. Salman Ali Agha will captain the T20I side, while fast bowlers Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali and Shaheen Shah Afridi return to the squad in this format. Following the conclusion of the three-match T20I series in Bangladesh, Pakistan team will arrive in the USA on Sunday, 27 July. Usman, Imam, Khushdil, Wasim Jr, Irfan axed Several key players, including Salman Mirza, Akif Javed, and Imam-ul-Haq, have been dropped from Pakistan's squad. In the T20I squad, young pacers Abbas Afridi, Salman Mirza, and Ahmed Daniyal have been dropped. All three had featured in the recent three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, where Pakistan suffered a 2-1 defeat in Mirpur. Salman Mirza's exclusion raised eyebrows, as he was Pakistan's top wicket-taker in the series, finishing with seven wickets in three games at an impressive economy rate of 5.21. Ahmed Daniyal, who also made his debut in that series, picked up three wickets in two matches at an economy rate of 5.57 and chipped in with 17 valuable runs at a strike rate of 154.54. Abbas Afridi, known for his performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), could not make a significant impact and has also been left out of the touring party. In the ODI squad, several players from the team that faced New Zealand earlier this year have been dropped. Akif Javed, Usman Khan, Imam-ul-Haq, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Wasim Jr., Irfan Khan, Haris Rauf and Tayyab Tahir are all missing from the 16-member squad for the three-match series. Imam-ul-Haq, who made a comeback in Pakistan's ODI setup against New Zealand, has not been included. Similarly, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Akif Javed, Usman Khan, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Ali, Irfan Khan and Tayyab Tahir, who were expected to be part of Pakistan's long-term plans, have also failed to retain their places. Young pacer Akif Javed, who impressed in the New Zealand series earlier this year by taking seven wickets in three games at an average of 23.57, has also been left out of the squad. Another notable exclusion from the ODI squad is Khushdil Shah, who last featured in the Champions Trophy match against India, where he scored 38 runs to help Pakistan reach a respectable total. He also claimed one wicket in that game. Wicketkeeper-batter Usman Khan has also been dropped from the squad without being given a proper chance in the ODI team. He featured in just two matches, scoring 51 runs. Pakistan's tour of the West Indies will begin with three T20Is in Lauderhill, USA, followed by three ODIs in Trinidad & Tobago. 16-member squad for ODIs: Mohammad Rizwan (captain), Salman Ali Agha (vice-captain), Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Mohammad Haris (wicket-keeper), Mohammad Nawaz, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sufyan Moqim 15-member squad for T20Is: Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Haris (wicket-keeper), Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan (wicket-keeper), Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sufyan Moqim Team management: Naveed Akram Cheema (manager), Mike Hesson (head coach), Ashley Noffke (bowling coach), Hanif Malik (batting Coach), Shane McDermott (fielding Coach), Cliffe Deacon (physiotherapist), Grant Luden (strength and conditioning coach), Talha Ejaz (analyst), Syed Naeem Ahmad (media manager), Irtaza Komail (security manager), Dr Wajid Ali Rafai (team doctor) and Muhammad Ehsan (masseur).
