Wiaan Mulder does a Shubman Gill in Zimbabwe; South African captain becomes third to hit 200 on Test captaincy debut

Wiaan Mulder emulated Indian captain Shubman Gill to score a hundred on his first Test match as captain on Sunday. Leading South Africa in the absence of injured Keshav Maharaj, Mulder brought up his hundred against Zimbabwe on the first day of the second Test at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Mulder's Gill connection came after the Indian skipper scored 147 in his first Test as a captain in Leeds during the first Test against England earlier in the month. Mulder also became the 33rd captain to score a hundred in a debut Test match as a skipper. That's not all. Mulder went on to convert his hundred into a double century to become the third batter in the world to score a double ton in their first innings as a Test captain. Only Graham Dowling of New Zealand and West Indies' Shivnarine Chanderpaul had achieved the same before Mulder. With this double ton, Mulder also became the fourth South African to hit a double century on the first day a Test match. Gary Kirsten (2001), Graeme Smith (2002, 2008) and Herschelle Gibbs (2003) had achieved the same before Mulder.

Wiaan Mulder Breaks World Record Of Scoring Most Runs In 1st Test As Captain

Last Updated: 27-year-old Mulder is the first player in the world to score 250 runs in his first Test as captain. South Africa's Wiaan Mulder on Sunday (July 6) scripted history in Bulawayo. In his first Test as South Africa captain, which is currently underway against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club, he broke the world record for scoring the most runs (in an innings) in the first Test as captain. The 27-year-old right-arm medium pacer came out to bat at No. 3 on Sunday and crossed the 250-run mark in the 84th over of South Africa's first innings. Before Mulder, the record of scoring the most runs in an innings of the first Test as captain was in the name of New Zealand's Graham Dowling. Dowling made his Test captaincy debut for the Kiwis against India in February 1968 in Christchurch and scored 239 runs from 519 balls in the first innings. Shivnarine Chanderpaul of the West Indies, who is the only other captain besides Mulder and Dowling to score a double century in the first Test as captain, is third on the list now. Chanderpaul made his Test captaincy debut for the West Indies against South Africa in March-April 2005 at Georgetown and remained unbeaten on 203 runs from 370 balls in the first innings.
