GREG COTE'S HOT BUTTON TOP 10 (JULY 13): WHAT IN SPORTS HAS GRABBED US THIS WEEK: Our Sunday Hot Button Top 10 notes column -- back after a week off -- brings you what's on our minds, locally and nationally but from a Miami perspective and accentuating stuff that's big, weird, damnable, funny or otherwise worth needling as the sports week just past pivots to the week ahead. Welcome to the 110th edition of your HB10:
1. INTER MIAMI: All abooaarrd! Red-hot Messi keeps 2-2 Train goin'!: Lionel Messi scored two goals Saturday night for the fifth straight league game set set an MLS record in a 2-1 home win over Nashville. Inter Miami is now 11-3-5 and fifth in the East but with three fewer games played than the top five. Miami is unbeaten since losing in the FIFA Club World Cup round of 16 to Paris Saint-Germain. next: Team Messi has three more MLS matches starting Wednesday at Cincinnati before a schedule pause to begin Leagues Cup play July 30 vs. Mexican club Atlas.
2. SOCCER: Club World Cup gets mammoth final in PSG, Chelsea: The FIFA Club World Cup's debut as a major 32-team event across the U.S. had its negatives -- notably slashed ticket prices to combat lousy crowds for some matches. But can't argue the bottom line: A bona fide, world-class championship match in favored reigning European king Paris Saint-Germain vs. English power Chelsea. PSG throttled Real Madrid in the semis 4-0 while Chelsea handled Brazil's Fluminense 2-nil, creating a Sunday title match at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium that looks a jewel of a finish.
3. MLB: Now it gets good with Draft, Derby and All-Star Game: With due respect nobody cares about the Futures Game or the dumb Celebrity Softball. But now All-Star Week revs up with the MLB Draft starting Sunday, the Home Run Derby Monday and the ASG itself Tuesday. Sometimes the longball contest steals the spotlight but it-guy slugger Cal Raleigh tops a Derby rather low-watt overall for starpower. For me the All-Star Game shines brighter brighter this year with Shoehei Ohtani and Aaron Judge out front.
4. HEAT: Powell a major add; rookie Jakucionis shines in debut: Miami trading for 21-point scorer Norman Powell from the Clippers while also divesting of dead wood Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love was a win-win for Pat Riley and the Heat in Miami's biggest move of a quiet offseason. Meanwhile Heat's top draft pick Kasparas Jakucionis debuted with 24 points in a loss to Atlanta to open NBA Summer League play in Las Vegas. Heat's back on the summer wood tonight vs. Cleveland.
5. TENNIS: Iga Swiatek wins Wimbledon; Sinner-Alcaraz go today: No. 8-seed Iga Swiatek easily made Wimbledon her sixth career major win Saturday, beating 13th-ranked American Amanda Anisimova from Aventura (near Miami), 6-0, 6-0 -- the tourney's first finals shutout since 1911. Today/Sunday it's No. 1 Jannik Sinner vs. No. 2 Carlos Alvarez in a heavyweight men's final as the U.S. extends its drought of no men's Wimbledon winner since Pete Sampras in 2000 -- though fifth-seed Taylor Fritz gave it a run to the semis. Sinner has three career majors including Wimbledon last year; Alcaraz has five including the recent French Open.
6. MARLINS: Throwin' Junk! Fish ride upswing into All-Star break: Marlins enter All-Star break on a 13-6 run that has lifted them from the NL East cellar to third place after Saturday's 6-0 win in Baltimore on a gem by impossibly named pitcher Janson Junk. Recent upswing included an 11-game road win streak. Low-payroll Miami still is a longshot to get into the wild-card playoff hunt as the July 31 trade deadline nears. Meanwhile the Marlins have the No. 7 overall pick in MLB Draft starting today and seem set on a shortstop. Mark the names Billy Carlson, Eli Willits and JoJo Parker, all straight outta high school at that position.
7. WNBA: Unrivaled league returning to Miami ... but what about WNBA?: Unrivaled the offseason 3-on-3 league made up of WNBA stars, is planning for Year II and keeping Miami as its home base, though it will venture out at least a couple of times to bigger arenas in non-WNBA cities. Now when will the WNBA itself come back to South Florida? The league just announced it will grow to 18 teams by adding Cleveland in 2028, Detroit in '29 and Philadelphia in '30 after first expanding to Portland and Toronto. So where's Miami? The Miami Sol was an early WNBA team in 2000-02. It's past time for Miami 2.0.
8. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: What is wrong with Deion Sanders?: Even celebrities have a right to privacy, and Colorado coach Deion Sanders is exercising his by declining to reveal his current health issue that saw him missing much of the summer away from his team and appearing noticeably thinner at Big 12 media day. Sanders has dealt with persistent health issues with his left food and blood clots, including the amputation of two toes in 2021. In a recent podcast appearance he admitted his current situation is 'at a whole other level.' Sanders is easy to dislike with a persona bordering on arrogance, but we wish him well in whatever he is battling.
9. MEDIA: Panthers a 'Team of Year' finalist at ESPY Awards: ESPN's masterwork in self-promotion marks its 33rd annual ESPY Awards this Wednesday in L.A., with comedian Shane Gillis hosting. Slim pickin's for Miami-area finalists, with only the Florida Panthers for Team of the Year and Coco Gauff for Best Tennis Player repping South Florida among the 19 major categories open for public voting. I'd call both longshots, though a back-to-back Stanley Cup winner is obviously deserving. SoFla last had an ESPY Team of the Year when the Big 3-era Miami Heat won it in 2012 and again in '13.
10. DOLPHINS: Farewell Ndamukong Suh upon his official retirement: Suh was a pretty great NFL defensive tackle for five teams including the Miami Dolphins in 2015-17 in the heart of his career. He last played in 2022 but made his retirement official this week at age 38. Not saying he's a certain Hall of Famer like Aaron Donald, but Suh, with five Pro Bowls (including '16 as a Dolphin) and three times a first-team All-Pro, deserves strong consideration from Canton.

Last year it was Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran. The year before, it was Rockies catcher Elias Diaz. Both Duran and Diaz were making their All-Star debuts and have not made it back to the game. Prior to those two, Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton won in 2022 and Blue Jays slugger Vladdy Guerrero Jr. won in 2021, both star names. There are two superstars, however, that have yet to win ASG MVP: Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge. Ohtani, a five-time All-Star, won AL MVP in 2021 and 2023, and NL MVP last season. Judge, a seven-time All-Star, won AL MVP in 2022 and 2024. Last season, Ohtani hit a three-run homer, while Judge went 0-for-2. MLB 2025 Home Run Derby: Predictions, Participants, Odds
With Cal Raleigh threatening a Barry Bonds record and Aaron Judge making dinger history , the 2025 MLB season has already basically been a Home Run Derby, just unofficially. On Monday night we'll get the real thing, when eight players face off in the annual All-Star Game event at the home of the Braves, Truist Park. Will Big Dumper continue to dominate? Will Oneil Cruz leverage that 6-foot-7 frame into more homers than anyone? Will Braves' slugger Matt Olson give the hometown fans something to cheer about? Let's dive in and see who's in the 2025 Home Run Derby, their chances of winning are and some predictions. Participants Cal Raleigh, Mariners (38 HRs) Raleigh is leading the majors in home runs, and also hit the second-most of anyone in MLB history before the All-Star break — just one behind Barry Bonds' 39 in 2001, which still left Raleigh with the AL record. Whether that will translate into Derby dingers remains to be seen, but there's no doubting his power. This is the third season in a row that the Mariners' catcher has hit at least 30 home runs, and in just four full seasons in the majors, he's gone yard 131 times. DraftKings odds: +295 (bet $10 to win $39.50 total) Oneil Cruz, Pirates (16 HRs) While Cruz's career-high in home runs is 21, he's already gone yard 16 times in 2025. Plus, if you've ever looked at him before, then you've got a pretty good idea about how much power is locked away in him: Cruz stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 240 pounds. Not only that, but when he crushes a ball, he crushes it: he set a record for exit velocity on a home run in 2022, which stood until 2025… when Cruz himself broke it with the hardest hit ball you've ever seen . Letting a guy like that into Derby is a potential treat for us all. DraftKings odds: +330 (bet $10 to win $43 total) James Wood, Nationals (24 HRs) The Nationals' young phenom has played in just over a season's worth of games in the majors. In those 174 contests, he's gone deep 33 times, and is on pace for 40 homers this year alone. The 22-year-old hasn't been around the game as long as his competitors, but he's already got the bonafides to make you believe he can cause some real damage at the Derby. DraftKings odds: +450 (bet $10 to win $55 total) Matt Olson, Braves (17 HRs) Matt OIson is in his second Derby. Despite hitting 23 homers in the first round back in 2021, when Olson was still with the Athletics, he lost to Trey Mancini's 24. And while he might not sound that exciting with just 17 home runs this year compared to Raleigh's 38, Olson is still on pace for his fifth 30-homer season, and led the majors with 54 in 2023. DraftKings odds: +800 (bet $10 to win $90 total) Brent Rooker, Athletics (20 HRs) Brent Rooker is the first Athletics player in the Home Run Derby since Olson's turn in 2021, and he's got legitimate pop. Rooker has gone yard 20 times already in 2025, and hit 30 and 39 homers in the previous two seasons, despite playing his home games in the cavernous Coliseum in Oakland before the A's moved to their temporary home in Sacramento. DraftKings odds: +850 (bet $10 to win $95 total) Byron Buxton, Twins (21 HRs) Byron Buxton has had a serious resurgence in his power in 2025: his career-high in homers is 28, and he's at 21 already this summer. Health has long been the issue for the Twins' outfielder, but he's played in 78 games in '25, and is showing off what he can do when he's on the field. That could translate into far more homers than you'd think just given the raw numbers from his career. DraftKings odds: +950 (bet $10 to win $15 total) Jazz Chisholm Jr., Yankees (17 HRs) People think Aaron Judge when Yankees with power come up, but Jazz Chisholm is no slouch. He has been New York's second-best hitter so far in 2025, and has hit 17 long balls in just 65 games. His first full season with the Yankees has been a memorable one so far, and mashing his way through the Home Run Derby would only add to that. DraftKings odds: +1100 (bet $10 to win $120 total) Junior Caminero, Rays (23 HRs) If Junior Caminero has any real faults in his game, they're due to being just 21 years old and in his first full season in the majors. Even with that context, though, the Rays' slugger has already hit 23 homers in 2025 and 30 in 141 career MLB games, and unlike with pitchers in the regular season, no one at the Derby is going to try to find any holes in his swing. DraftKings odds: +1200 (bet $10 to win $130 total) Predictions Most Total Home Runs: Oneil Cruz is going to look like he's taking batting practice out there, even more than is usual for the Derby. Most Home Runs in a Round: Jazz Chisholm Jr. is going to absolutely lock in at some point, and it's going to be the round of the evening. Home Run Derby Winner: Cal Raleigh is going to bat left-handed – his best side – in a park that favors lefties. This is his Derby to lose. Darkhorse candidate: Junior Caminero has tremendous power tucked away in Tampa Bay, and is going to surprise a lot of people at the 2025 Derby.
