Virginia Tech Football: 2025 Hokies Season Preview and Prediction
It's now or never for coach Brent Pry, who enters Year 4 with a 16-21 record and failed to launch in 2024 despite a talented roster. Pressure is mounting to have a breakthrough at a program stuck in a decade and a half of mostly malaise. That'll be tough with a lineup that might have better depth in some spots but not nearly the star power of last year's squad. If the coordinator hires don't hit, it might mean another middling season with increased questions about Pry's job security.

Previewing Virginia Tech's Offense for 2025
It's a reset offensively for the Hokies, who welcome new coordinator Philip Montgomery. With a quarterback résumé that includes Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III at Baylor, there's hope Montgomery can get the most out of Kyron Drones, who suffered through an injury-plagued 2024, throwing for 10 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Bruising Bowling Green transfer Terion Stewart is expected to headline a rotating backfield. Ayden Greene, who had his first 100-yard effort in the Hokies' bowl game, has star potential in a wideout group that could be interesting if Donavon Greene (Wake Forest) stays healthy and Cameron Seldon (Tennessee) handles a position switch.
Much rides on an overhauled offensive line that lost five starters and brought in Matt Moore as the third O-line coach in head coach Brent Pry's four years. Tomas Rimac, who came with Moore from West Virginia, anchors the group, but major strides are needed here.

Previewing Virginia Tech's Defense for 2025
After three years, Pry pulled the plug on the Chris Marve experiment at defensive coordinator, hiring up-and-comer Sam Siefkes with hopes of bringing a fresh mindset. Siefkes employs all sorts of fronts and personnel, stressing an attacking approach and situational awareness.

The personnel is an odd mix of returners and transfers. The strength resides up front, where Kelvin Gilliam Jr. and Kemari Copeland hold down the interior and newcomers James Djonkam (Eastern Michigan) and Ben Bell (Texas State) bring edge pressure.
Questions mount in the back seven. Linebacker has been a sore spot since Pry arrived, though Jaden Keller and Caleb Woodson, the leading returning tacklers, bring continuity. With four safety transfers and a young cornerback room, there's uncertainty aplenty in the secondary, though Tech has more depth than last year.

All-ACC punt returner Tucker Holloway is back from a right knee injury that cost him all of 2024, bringing a career 15.5-yard average. Kicker John Love went 16-for-18 on field goals last year. Veteran punter Peter Moore is gone, but hopes are high for Nick Veltsistas.

Cleveland baseball legend Larry Doby remembered 78 years after groundbreaking achievement
Larry Doby broke the American League's color barrier 78 years ago today, on July 5, 1947. It was just a few months after Jackie Robinson first took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the National League. Advertisement Playing for the Cleveland Indians, the outfielder Doby visited each AL city as the first Black man to ever play in games at those stadiums, in an era well before inter-league play. Doby's national legacy is a bit muted because Robinson was first to MLB, but Doby surely endured many of the same stresses and hate that Robinson did. Along the way, Doby was one of the best players in baseball. He didn't join Cleveland until he had played four seasons in the Negro Leagues and also served in the Navy in World War II. That included 273 home runs, 1,099 RBI and 1,697 hits. Late in his career, Doby also suited up for the White Sox and Tigers. His decade in Cleveland is where he was a baseball trailblazer, and a superstar. And on Larry Doby Day, July 5th every year, Doby is remembered, maybe not on as quite as wide a scale of Robinson, but deserving every bit of a legendary legacy in his own right. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II) LONDON (AP) — Chelsea completed the signing of English winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund on Saturday for a reported initial fee of 48.5 million pounds ($66 million). The 20-year-old Gittens signed a contract until 2032 and follows in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, another former Manchester City youth player who developed his game at Dortmund. Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea from Manchester United. Advertisement 'It feels great,' Gittens said. "It's a great feeling to join such a big club as Chelsea. 'I can't wait to learn from everyone in the team and to push myself to the max here. It's an amazing feeling.' Gittens joined Dortmund in 2020 shortly after his 16th birthday and scored 12 times in all competitions last season, but was often dropped to the bench after coach Niko Kovac took over in February. Known as Jamie Bynoe-Gittens when he made his Dortmund debut in 2022, the winger announced last year he wanted to be known simply as Jamie Gittens.
