'Lilo & Stitch' cruises to No. 1 again; John Wick spinoff 'Ballerina' dances to 2nd place

In the box office showdown between a deadly assassin and a chaotic CG alien, "Lilo & Stitch" still had the edge. The Disney juggernaut celebrated a third weekend at the top of the charts, while the John Wick spinoff "Ballerina" did not jeté as high as expected.
According to studio estimates Sunday, "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina" earned $25 million from 3,409 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. Several weeks ago it was tracking to open in the $35 to $40 million range, but that was adjusted down several times. Ultimately, it still came in lower than forecasts. The movie, directed by Len Wiseman, makes a sideline character out of Keanu Reeves' John Wick and focuses on Ana de Armas. It takes place during the events of "John Wick 3."
The box office performance is a bit perplexing result considering that "Ballerina" got good critic reviews and audience exit polls. Conventional wisdom would say that word of mouth might have given it a boost over the weekend. But, recently, opening weekend isn't the end all that it used to be. "Ballerina" could be in the game for the long haul.
"Even though its part of the John Wick franchise, it's playing like a true original. And that's not a bad thing," said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore. "This was not a movie that was ever going to open like a 'Mission: Impossible' or another huge franchise."
The Lionsgate release, a Thunder Road Films and 87Eleven Entertainment production, had a hefty production price tag reported to be in the $90 million range. But much of that cost has already been offset by foreign pre-sales. Internationally, it earned $26 million from 82 countries, bringing its global opening to $51 million.
As the first spinoff, it's the second lowest opening of the five-film franchise – above only the first film which opened just over $14 million in 2014, which does not account for inflation. The franchise overall has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.
Dergarabedian added that the R-rated "Ballerina" could also be positioned for a strong second weekend, when it goes up against family-targeted "How to Train Your Dragon."
First place once again went to "Lilo & Stitch," which added another $32.5 million in North America, bringing its domestic total to $335.8 and global tally to $772.6 million. In just 17 days, it's already made more domestically than the live-action "The Little Mermaid" did in its entire run ($298 million).
"Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning" slid to third place with $15 million, bringing its worldwide total to $450.4 million. "Karate Kid: Legends" earned $8.7 million to take fourth place. And "Final Destination: Bloodlines" rounded out the top five with $6.5 million.
The new Wes Anderson movie "The Phoenician Scheme" expanded beyond New York and Los Angeles to 1,678 theaters nationwide. The Focus Features release starring Benicio del Toro made an estimated $6.3 million and landed in sixth place.
The R-rated anime "Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye" also made the top 10 in its first weekend. The GKIDS release made $3.1 million from 1,080 theaters.
Overall, the box office is up over 26% from this point in 2024.
Top 10 movies by domestic box office

2. "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina," $25 million.
3. "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning," $15 million.
4. "Karate Kid: Legends," $8.7 million.
5. "Final Destination: Bloodlines," $6.5 million.
6. "The Phoenician Scheme," $6.3 million.

Keanu Reeves signs up for F1 docuseries as Brad Pitt's movie is a box office smash

Keanu Reeves isn't going to let Brad Pitt be the only one repping Formula One onscreen. The 60-year-old Matrix star has just signed on to produce and host a new docuseries about the Cadillac team's journey to the highest class of worldwide racing for open-wheel single-seater cars. Keanu heads up the VIP behind-the-scenes look at the creation of F1's newest operation, which will air before Cadillac's debut at Melbourne 's Albert Park next March. 'I'm very honored and excited to be a part of telling the remarkable Cadillac Formula 1 Team story and its incredible journey into the world of Formula 1 racing,' Keanu told on Wednesday. 'Our goal with the docuseries is to bring audiences into the heart of this journey and showcase what it takes to participate in one of the most exclusive sports arenas in the world.' The docuseries reunites Reeves with his Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story showrunner Simon Hammerson after the pair triumphantly won an International Emmy Award on November 25. TWG Motorsports CEO Dan Towriss said the team was 'honored to work with Keanu, whose passion and knowledge of racing runs deep, and proud to partner with GM on this incredible story. 'We have an opportunity to welcome a new generation of fans to Formula 1 and Keanu's creativity is the perfect spark to ignite that journey.' Last March, the Ballerina producer-star and his fellow ARCH Motorcycle co-founder Gard Hollinger executive produced and co-hosted the innovative docuseries Visionaries for the Roku Channel. Ironically, Keanu did not perform that well when he made his own motorsport debut in the Toyota GR Cup North America amateur race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway last October. In a field of 33 racers, Reeves finished in 25th place and 24th place in two races after spinning out his Eagle Canyon Racing-prepared GR86 into the grass, but he did not crash. 'Hi, I'm Keanu Reeves, I'm No. 92, the first [session] today was a blast,' the Beirut-born Canadian said at the time. It's fun. Racing is fun…it's fun. Everyone says it's fun, and it's fun.' But in 2009, Keanu and his front-drive Scion tC coupé managed to win the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in Long Beach, CA against other A-list drivers. Speaking of which, other celebs who've felt the need for speed in real life have included Tom Cruise, Patrick Dempsey, Eric Bana, Caitlyn Jenner, and the late great Paul Newman. Reeves will next portray Estragon opposite Alex Winter's Vladimir in director Jamie Lloyd's Broadway revival of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, which begins previews September 13 before the September 28-January 4, 2026 run at the Hudson Theatre in Manhattan. The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 star will also portray the angel Gabriel in Aziz Ansari's feature directorial debut Good Fortune - hitting US/UK theaters October 17 - alongside Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, and Sandra Oh. Keanu's other upcoming projects include Francis Lawrence's long-delayed Constantine sequel, Jonah Hill's black comedy Outcome for Apple TV+, and Ruben Östlund's satirical black comedy The Entertainment System Is Down.

A guide to Zurich: how to explore like a champ in the home of the Women's Euros

For those who want to live like the Lionesses, though, the Dolder Grand is the place to be – in fact, it's serving as the base for the England team during their time in the Euros. Situated just 10 minutes from the city centre, the hotel is easy to spot: it looks like a Disney castle. Inside, it's just as luxe: it's been home to rockstars (including the Rolling Stones) and royals during the years. Plus, it has one of the largest spas in Switzerland.

Ex-Russian soldier prevented notorious Brit paedo from 'marrying' girl

Jacky Jhaj, 39, was arrested a week ago thanks to Vitalijs, a 54-year-old Russian ex special forces paratrooper, after the Londoner tried to "marry" a Ukrainian schoolgirl A former Russian special forces paratrooper has emerged as the whistleblower who stopped a notorious Brit paedo allegedly 'marrying' a nine-year-old girl at Disneyland Paris. The 54-year-old Latvian, who only uses his first name of Vitalijs for security reasons, helped get Londoner Jacky Jhaj, 39, arrested a week ago last Saturday. Jhaj – who is on a sex offenders register in the UK following criminal convictions – remains in custody in France after being charged with a series of criminal offences. All are connected with the bizarre £111,000 ceremony at Disneyland, which involved a schoolgirl from Ukraine who was meant to act as his "bride". On Wednesday, Vitalijs said he had been offered the equivalent of £550 to play "the father of the bride". He assumed he was giving away the 41-year-old mother, but when he realised the betrothed was in fact her little girl, he exploded with anger. Vitalijs, who served as a paratrooper in the Red Army before the collapse of the old Soviet Union, only found out about the child's role 'five hours before the ceremony' and immediately quit, he said. Despite Jhaj telling him to stay away, he travelled to Disneyland to alert management about the involvement of the minor. "I knew I had to do something," he said. "I sneaked into Disneyland without a pass." Vitalijs, who does not speak French or English, used his special forces training to get into the theme park – the most popular in Europe – and carried a note with him. It read: "This is not a real wedding. The girl is nine years old!" Vitalijs said he approached the wedding stage, and handed the message to a Disney employee, who ensured the "wedding was stopped immediately." Police arrived within minutes, and a number of suspects including Jhaj were arrested and taken into custody. Vitalijs was driven to a police station, where he was shown a fake British passport with his photo on it. Vitalijs said: "I found out that my passport had been forged. I only remember the first name, Mikhail. I don't remember the surname. I remembered that a woman in Riga [Latvia] had asked me for a passport photo for a pass to Disneyland. Of course, I told the police that it wasn't me and that it wasn't my passport." Vitalijs was released without charge, as were the Ukrainian mother and child. Vitalijs had got to know the pair after meeting them at a casting session for the Disneyland stunt in the Czech Republic in May. She told him she had known Jhaj for a year, and even gone on holiday with him, while also accepting cash from him. Jhaj has since claimed: "I'm just a simple actor who took part in a film shoot". Jhaj made the comment to examining magistrates in Meaux, east of the capital city, after his arrest. His lawyer, Jean-Christophe Ramadier, said Jhaj was solely placed in 'provisional custody' because 'he had no guarantee of legal representation in France, where he has no address.' He has admitted being found guilty of sexual activity with two 15-year-olds in Britain in 2016. Jean-Baptiste Bladier, the Meaux prosecutor, confirmed the Ukrainian child had not suffered 'any violence, neither physical nor sexual,' and had 'not been forced into playing the bride.' Mr Bladier said Jhaj 'played the role of the groom after having been professionally made up to display a face completely different from his own.' An unidentified 24-year-old Lativian woman is also being held in connection with the stunt. The investigation into the fake wedding continues.
