PAC hosts 'Sur Sangeet' to mark I-Day
Independence Day is being celebrated with great enthusiasm and grandeur. To mark the occasion, the Punjab Arts Council Rawalpindi, in collaboration with the Information and Culture Department, Government of Punjab, has launched a series of events from August 1 to August 14.
The celebrations include tree plantation drives, building decorations, illuminations with decorative lights, musical concerts, flag hoisting ceremonies, and cake-cutting events.
As part of the festivities, a music show titled Sur Sangeet was held the other day, where young artists from the Rawalpindi Division showcased their talents. Performers included Ustad Azhar Shah, Wazir Ali, Ramiz Ishaq, Muhammad Daniyal, Majeed Manzoor, Sheikh Ahmad Shehzad, Waheed Uz Zaman, Sharon Khan, Dr Natasha, and Binesh Kiyani. The event drew a large audience, including civil officers, poets, and artists, who warmly praised the performances.

Dubai to hold Pakistan Independence Day celebration on August 10
Dubai is set to celebrate Pakistan's 78th Independence Day on August 10, expecting to bring together more than 40,000 members of the Pakistani community at Expo City, reported Gulf News on Monday. Sahir Ali Bagga, singer and composer, Natasha Baig, Sufi-rock artist from Hunza and Yousuf Bashir Qureshi, poet and visual artist, are set to perform at the event. Pakistani film star Humayun Saeed and former national cricket team captain Sana Mir are also slated to attend. Organised by Emirates Loves Pakistan in collaboration with the Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD), the event titled 'Jashn-e-Azaadi Pakistan 2025' will be held at the Dubai Exhibition Centre, Expo City. The event will take place from 11am to 11pm, offering a full day of cultural activities, entertainment, and community engagement, added the report. UAE assures full cooperation on easing visa process for Pakistanis The event is set to highlight the richness of Pakistan's culture, heritage, and artistic traditions. Organisers describe the celebration as a tribute to Pakistan's past, present, and future, and a day of unity for the UAE-based Pakistani community. Guests in attendance are slated to include: Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence; Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, Ambassador of Pakistan to the UAE; Hussain Muhammad, Consul General of Pakistan; and Dr Faisal Ikram, PAD President. It will also comprise of an awards ceremony where prominent Pakistani individuals and community leaders will be honoured for their contributions. The awards will be presented by Sheikh Nahyan. The event has free entry for all.

Broadcasting veteran and TalkTV host James Whale dies aged 74
Veteran broadcaster James Whale has died at the age of 74, following a prolonged battle with cancer. The TalkTV host passed away peacefully on Monday morning, his wife Nadine Lamont-Brown confirmed to the Express, saying: 'James slipped away very gently this morning. It was a beautiful passing and he left with a smile on his face.' Whale was first diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2000, and underwent surgery to remove one of his kidneys. Though the operation was initially successful, the cancer returned in 2020 and later spread to his brain, spine, lungs, and remaining kidney. In May this year, he announced he had stopped treatment and had moved into a hospice near his home in Kent. In his final column for the Daily Express, published shortly before his death, he wrote: 'I know I've reached the end of my life but I'm quite sanguine about it. Despite everything, I'm happy to go now.' His final months were marked by increasing frailty, and he candidly discussed his condition on-air, stating in June: 'Things are getting very, very difficult.' Despite his health challenges, Whale continued broadcasting and recording his podcast Tales of the Whales, co-hosted with his wife. In one emotional episode, he whispered 'I love you' to Nadine, who responded tearfully: 'The best.' Whale's broadcasting career spanned more than five decades, beginning at Metro Radio in 1974. He gained national fame in the 1980s with The James Whale Radio Show, known for his frank, often controversial style. He spent 13 years at TalkSport, also hosting on LBC, BBC Essex, and several ITV and BBC television programs. In 2024, he was awarded an MBE for services to broadcasting and charity. Whale was previously married to Melinda Whale, who died of lung cancer in 2018. The couple had two sons, James and Peter, and two grandchildren. He remarried in 2021, crediting Nadine with giving him the strength to carry on following his terminal diagnosis. TalkTV said in a statement: 'We are sad to announce that James Whale MBE died earlier today, aged 74, following a lengthy battle with cancer. As a broadcasting legend for over 50 years, James will be missed by so many at Talk and the wider News UK family.'
