Op Sindoor: CDS contradicts Army Deputy Chief, says China support to Pakistan ‘very difficult to define'

The Print6 days ago
At a Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry event on Friday, Singh said, 'Pakistan was the front face. We had China providing all possible support. This is no surprise because if you look at statistics, in the last five years, 81 percent of the military hardware that Pakistan is getting is Chinese. China, of course—the good old dictum, killed by a borrowed knife … So, it would rather use the neighbour to cause pain than get involved in the mud-slinging match on the northern borders.'
His comments came just days after Deputy Chief of Army Staff (capability development & sustenance) Lt Gen. Rahul R. Singh made a candid assessment in public, saying there were multiple lessons to be learnt from the 87-hour conflict, the biggest lesson being that while it was just one border, India had a minimum of three adversaries.
New Delhi: Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan Tuesday sought to underplay Chinese support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, saying, 'How much of State support is very difficult to define'.
Singh also said China was giving live updates of Indian military deployments to Pakistan.
'When DGMO-level talks were on, Pakistan actually was mentioning that we know that your such and such vector was primed and ready for action, and we would request you to—perhaps—pull it back. So, it was getting live inputs from China. That is one place we really need to move fast and take appropriate action,' he said.
However, speaking at an Observer Research Federation event in Delhi on Tuesday, Gen. Chauhan said that there was no unusual activity on the northern borders during the conflict with Pakistan.
'Maybe it was a short conflict, but it is a fact that there was no unusual activity. The second fact is that Pakistan imports most of its weapons from China. Chinese OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) have a number of liabilities, so there will be people attempting to service their liabilities, and they will be there. That happens everywhere,' he said.
'Third is information—there are a number of Chinese companies also doing work for commercial imagery. You have Maxar and Planet Labs. You can go to China or the US. How much of State support is very difficult to define,' he said.
China on Monday defended Beijing's 'traditional friendship' with Islamabad, saying that defence and security cooperation is part of the 'normal cooperation' between them.

India's new copper cathode rule risks supply shortages, says trade body

India's quality control order on copper cathodes is likely to reduce domestic availability due to "costly and unnecessary compliance burdens" on foreign suppliers, the Bombay Metal Exchange said. India, the world's second-largest importer of refined copper, imposed quality controls on copper cathode imports in December, requiring all suppliers, foreign and domestic, to ensure there were checks on substandard products in the country. The quality control curbs have led to a decline in imports, the Bombay Metal Exchange (BME) said - a claim rejected by the government. "With domestic licensees unable or unwilling to supply the market and unreliable foreign alternatives, the downstream sector faces real and immediate shortages," the BME said. India's federal Ministry of Mines did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. To meet the quality control rules, suppliers have to get a licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards, which oversees quality control in India. The quality controls have faced a legal challenge from trade bodies in India, including the BME and the Bombay Non-Ferrous Metals Association. The government has defended the quality control order in court against claims that it would lead to supply shortages and create a supply monopoly. The BME said all five domestic licensees use copper cathodes entirely for their own consumption. "As for foreign ... licensees, four of the 10 do not supply copper cathodes at all, offering only ingots or semi-finished forms," the BME said in a statement to Reuters. Among the 10 foreign suppliers who have secured certification under the new rules, seven are from Japan, two from Malaysia, and one from Austria, the Indian government said last month. Japan accounts for about two-thirds of India's refined copper imports, followed by Tanzania and Mozambique. The BME said there are growing indications the Japanese licensees will withdraw from the Indian market due to costly and unnecessary compliance burdens. Japanese trading house Marubeni, which was involved in the licensing process for six Japanese smelters, said: "No particular issues have arisen concerning supply to India." Copper is one of 30 minerals identified as critical by India in 2023, with domestic demand expected to double by 2030. Major domestic suppliers include Hindalco Industries and state-owned Hindustan Copper. DGCA orders all airlines to check fuel switches on Boeing 737, 787 aircraft

A month after Air India crash, DGCA has asked all airlines to inspect Boeing 737 and 787 fuel switches for locking faults New Delhi Aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), on Monday directed all Indian airlines to inspect the fuel switches on Boeing aircraft, including the 787 and 737 models. The aim is to identify any issues with the locking mechanism of these switches. The DGCA issued the order after learning that several Indian and international airlines had already started carrying out their own checks of the fuel switches. According to a Reuters report, the Air India Group began inspecting the fuel switches on its Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft over the weekend. So far, no faults have been detected. The order comes more than a month after Air India flight AI 171 crashed in Ahmedabad, killing 260 people, making it one of the worst aviation tragedies in India's recent history.
