"If Basavanna's principles are followed, all our problems can be resolved": Former Karnataka CM Bommai

Forces that promote violence in the name of religion have emerged, and if the 12th-century
social reformer
Basavanna's principles are followed, solutions to all their problems can be found, said former Karnataka Chief Minister and MP Basavaraj Bommai.

He was speaking while presiding over the
Basava Jayanthi celebration
and the Basavashree and Vachana Sahitya Shree awards ceremony organized by Basava Vedike at Ravindra Kalakshetra. He described Basavanna as a "wonderful personality."
He said, "If someone claims to have completely understood Basavanna, it means they have yet to attain true understanding. Basavanna was relevant in his time and remains relevant today. In one dimension, he spoke about the then-existing realities, and in another, he spoke against inequality and discrimination--issues that still persist, which is not something to feel proud about. When we look at what is happening in society today, it shows how much respect we have truly given to Basavanna's thoughts."

"There are three types of people in society," Bommai said. "Some talk only about the past and ignore reality. The second are revolutionaries--like the Sharana movement, the freedom struggle, and the Russian Revolution. They did not last long because we failed to carry forward their systems. We call Basavanna a revolutionary, but we must also ask what became of the revolution he started".
"The third are reformers--like Buddha, Basava, and Mahavira. They transcend time. We belong to a history enriched by such great personalities. But if we live only in the temporary world without realising this, we fail to understand our deeper roots", Bommai noted.
Live Events
He illustrated this with a metaphor: "Next to a well, there was a stream. The stream claimed superiority by saying it flowed and provided water to everyone, while the well just stood still. To this, the well replied that even though it stays in one place, it serves people in times of hardship. Similarly,
Vachana literature
is as valuable as any Vedas or Puranas--it is accessible and understandable even to common people."
Bommai reiterated Basavanna's quote: "Compassion is the root of religion." Yet, despite this, forces promoting violence in the name of religion have emerged. "Even with so much happening around us, we feel helpless. But we shouldn't feel that way. We must read and promote Basava literature and establish peace. Let there be victory to human dharma as preached by Renukacharya. We have forgotten our roots. If we hold on to Basavanna, we will find solutions to all our problems," he said.
He said that only when Basava Jayanthi is celebrated in every Dalit colony of the land will the state see true progress. Major changes in the world weren't made by governments or great powers, but by individuals--Einstein, Buddha, Prophet Muhammad, Basavanna.
"They were all great people. In life, sacrifice alone isn't enough. Realization comes only when one shares the deepest truths of the heart. When Swami Vivekananda said he had attained enlightenment, his guru Ramakrishna Paramahamsa told him, 'You will attain enlightenment only when your knowledge is shared with the world.' Following that advice, Vivekananda shared his knowledge with the world," he said.
He also said, "The writings of Nadoja
G.R. Channabasappa
are a great treasure. We must use his knowledge and strength."
The MP said Industries Minister
M.B. Patil
has a bright future ahead. The state's future should be linked to his. "You are serving F.G. Halakatti. A politician thinks about the next election, but a statesman thinks about the next generation. You are acting as a statesman, working for the benefit of the next generation," Bommai added.
The event was graced by the divine presence of
Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji
, head of Adichunchanagiri Math. Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna, Industries Minister M.B. Patil, Basava Vedike President Dr. C. Somashekara, and Vice President Shadakshari were also present.
On the occasion, senior writer G.R. Channabasappa was honoured with the Basavashree Award, while M.D. Pallavi and the Vachana Pitamaha F.G. Halakatti Research Foundation of B.L.D.E. Institute were honoured with the Vachana Sahitya Shree Award.

Pakistan, Turkiye & Bangladesh not on list of invitees for RSS centenary celebration

NEW DELHI: RSS will not extend invitations to the embassies of Pakistan, Turkiye and Bangladesh for its 100th anniversary celebrations, even as it is reaching out to other diplomatic missions it's been in touch with. The list of invitees includes representatives of minority communities, sports and cultural icons, thought leaders and entrepreneurs from emerging fields such as startups and Indian knowledge systems. The highlight of the centenary year will be a three-day dialogue in Delhi from Aug 26, led by sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat , focusing on Sangh's century-long journey, its role in nation-building and its vision for "new horizons". Bhagwat's Delhi address will be part of a series of four major events in the run-up to the Vijayadashami centenary on Oct 2. Similar dialogues are scheduled in Bengaluru in Nov, Kolkata thereafter, and Mumbai. Each will feature two days of lectures by Bhagwat and a third day devoted to a pre-submitted question-and-answer session. The Delhi programme will begin at 5.30 pm each day and will also delve into 'Panch Parivartan' (Five Transformations) agenda of the centenary year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Secret Lives of the Romanovs — the Last Rulers of Imperial Russia! "We are in contact with many embassies but given the current context, Pakistan will not be invited," he said. According to RSS sources, countries like Bangladesh and Turkiye are not going to be invited. The outreach programme also covers young innovators in technology, language promotion and entrepreneurship.

'Can I say I won them athletically': Trump jokes after receiving 1984 Olympic medals; prepares for 2028 games with new task force

During the exchange, Trump joked, 'Can I say that I won them athletically? That would be a great honour' He later thanked Wasserman through a post on Truth Social, saying, 'Thank you to Casey Wasserman, Chairman of 2028 LA Olympics…' The medal presentation took place at a White House event where Trump later signed an executive order establishing a presidential task force for the 2028 Olympic Games, which will be hosted in Los Angeles. Vice President JD Vance will serve as vice chair and the task force will include Cabinet secretaries and other top administration officials. 'The United States will not let men steal trophies from women at the 2028 Olympics,' Trump said at the event, praising Gene Sykes, chair of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee board, for the USOPC's move to bar transgender women from women's sports. After initial silence, Trump questioned the lack of applause, which was followed by scattered clapping. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What Will Happen to Your Body If You Start Eating 3 Eggs Every Day? Debate erupts over claims of british era 'Hanging house'

New Delhi: An intense debate erupted on the second day of the monsoon session of Delhi Assembly over Aam Aadmi Party's claims that a section of the legislative house complex was a British-era gallows and contained a secret tunnel. Speaker Vijender Gupta described these contentions as a distortion of history, while minister Parvesh Verma claimed that the opposition legislators were propagating "lies". In 2021, then Speaker Ram Niwas Goel said that a 'hanging house' was discovered on the assembly premises after a tunnel was discovered in 2016. The subterranean structure's mouth lies just below the floor of the assembly hall in the iconic building, once the Old Secretariat constructed in 1912 by the British after the imperial capital was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi. On Tuesday, MLA Abhay Verma proposed a condemnation resolution against the "distortion of history" by the previous govt. Verma claimed, "This place was an elevator but Arvind Kejriwal completely distorted a significant history." He added, "The photos, maps and documents we have prove that there were no gallows here. There was only an elevator used to move goods up and down. We will remove the gallows and present the room in its true reality. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Highest Earning College Majors—2025 Edition Best Paying Degrees | Search Ads Learn More Undo "AAP had renovated the "said" gallows room. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi While Gupta accused the earlier govt of attempting to change the history of the assembly, BJP legislator Ajay Mahawar claimed that the "misdeeds of the previous govt are coming to light one by one". AAP MLA Jarnail Singh countered, "Search for gallows in Delhi Assembly on ChatGPT and you will get all the information. You are only trying to hide the misdeeds of the British govt." To this, BJP legislator Sanjay Goyal responded that AAP ran the state govt like ChatGPT for years. Deputy speaker Mohan Singh Bisht weighed in on the debate by saying the assembly was a heritage and its history shouldn't be tampered with. Eventually, Gupta declared. "Upon consulting historians on the matter, it has been clarified that no such tunnel exists. What is being referred to is, in fact, ducting space created for ventilation. At the time, resources were limited, and whenever such buildings were constructed underground, space was left for ventilation ducts. This is not unique to this building; similar provisions exist in the old Parliament House too. " Gupta added, "The truth is that no gallows ever existed there, nor does one exist today. The room in question is, in fact, a tiffin room. The wooden lift within it, meant for carrying food and other items, has been incorrectly described as a gallows and trapdoor." The semi-circular, white building on Sham Nath Marg that houses Delhi Assembly was once the seat of British India. The building housed both the central legislative council (today's Parliament) and a temporary central secretariat when the capital of British India was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi in Dec 1911. Soon after the 1911 Delhi Durbar, during which King George V made the announcement on the shift of the capital, viceroy Lord Hardinge shifted base from Calcutta and set up a temporary capital in north Delhi's Civil Lines. The assembly building served as the temporary secretariat of the govt of India for a decade while New Delhi was being built. After Parliament House was inaugurated in 1927, it continued to be used for various purposes, including hosting the Delhi Metropolitan Council (1966-1990), before becoming the seat of the Delhi Legislative Assembly in 1993.
