Gen AI in cybersecurity: Will help defenders with better counter measures; India ahead of other nations

Time of India23-06-2025
Generative artificial intelligence, while being increasingly exploited by cyber criminals to fuel their attacks, is also empowering defenders with faster and smarter responses to online threats, according to Heather Adkins, global VP of engineering at Google Security.
Adkins, who has spent more than 20 years at Google, said, generative AI will give "defenders" a "leg up" over the threat actors.'
'We will be able to leverage Gen AI to protect infrastructure in new ways that we've never thought of before and also at a speed that we've never been able to achieve before,' she said, quoted by TNN.
She said that the same technology being used to plan sophisticated cyberattacks can also help strengthen defence systems.
Talking about cyberattacks in India, the Google security VP pointed out that the government is "very engaged" and has been ahead of many other nations in tackling these threats.
'It's a hot topic. They've done a very good job in getting involved quickly and partnering with companies. The workforce here and education levels in India are pretty high. There are parts of the world I go where they're just now starting to think about cyber security and they're much further behind India.'
Google Security now plans to set up an engineering centre in India.
She further warned of the growing threat posed by state-sponsored cyberattacks, particularly as geopolitical tensions continue to rise, putting the world at risk. 'It's a question of who has more time. And, if you think about a well-funded nation state, may be they'll create a project, put 100 people on it, and they just work on that project throughout the day...
So, they often know more because they have more time, not because they're smarter.
I would say they're more likely to be successful.'
Adkins highlighted the need to educate users alongside building tools, stating that digital instincts must be developed to spot malicious content online. 'Unlike the physical world where you have instincts and senses to identify something dangerous, the online world does not have a parallel.
We have to build that,' she said.
Despite the rising tempo and complexity of attacks, Adkins believed that the cybersecurity landscape is in a better place today. 'There's no doubt that we're seeing an increase in the tempo and sophistication of attacks. But today, more than ever before, enterprises have better tools.'
Cybersecurity looked 'primitive' 23 years ago, while now, most solutions have security built into them, she added.

Alphabet shares jump 3% as AI-driven spending fuels cloud revenue surge

Alphabet shares rose more than 3% in early trading on Thursday as the Google parent's earnings underscored a key message to investors: AI spending is climbing, but so are the returns. The tech giant has raised its 2025 capital spending forecast by $10 billion to $85 billion and signaled even higher outlay next year, stepping up efforts to meet soaring cloud demand and stay competitive in Silicon Valley's escalating AI race. Its cloud-computing unit delivered an almost 32% jump in second-quarter revenue, surpassing expectations, as investments in in-house chips and the Gemini AI model began to pay off. The results bode well for rivals Microsoft and both of which have been stepping up data center investments and operate larger cloud businesses. "Google came back fighting this quarter," said Bernstein analyst Mark Shmulik. "Investors have long been clamoring for Google to get more 'aggressive' in the AI race," he added. An early AI pioneer with its invention of the Transformer model - the foundation of most modern generative AI - Google appeared to fall behind OpenAI and Microsoft last year. But it has rebounded this year, with AI Mode reaching 100 million monthly users just two months into its wider rollout, and Gemini surpassing 450 million monthly users. Its ad business, which accounts for about three-quarters of its sales, also continues to fare well in the face of economic uncertainty wrought by tariffs and geopolitical tensions. Revenue in the business rose a better-than-expected 10.4%, a positive sign for rivals such as Meta and Snap that rely on digital ads for most of their revenue. At least 27 brokerages raised their price targets on Google stock after the results, taking the median target to $220 from $200 a month earlier. Still, some analysts warned the higher spending may draw fresh scrutiny from investors, who have largely stayed on the sidelines this year. Alphabet shares are up just 0.5% in 2025, trailing Microsoft's 20% increase and a 22% rise in Meta stock, also held back by regulatory battles that are looking to break its illegal monopoly in the search and the ad-tech markets. Alphabet's 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio stands at 18.88, trailing Microsoft's 33.03 and Amazon's 33.31, according to data compiled by LSEG. "On paper, it has all the right tools to lead in AI - cutting-edge models and massive distribution," said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. "That said, until there's more confidence AI integration won't cannibalise core search revenue, and some clarity around ongoing legal battles, there's enough uncertainty to cap near-term upside."

WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that enables users to interact with Meta AI — the platform's built-in chatbot — using their voice in real time. The capability, spotted by feature tracker WABetaInfo, is apparently available to some users running the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.21.21 and is expected to reach more beta testers in the coming weeks. OpenAI is expected to launch its GPT-5 model as soon as August, according to The Verge. The next-gen system will reportedly combine multiple model capabilities, moving beyond the idea of a single AI engine to handle a broader range of tasks. Leaked images of the upcoming Google Pixel Watch 4 suggest notable design updates, a revised charging method, and fresh colour options. The images, shared by 9To5Google, hint at what's to come in Google's latest smartwatch iteration. Snapchat has introduced 'Home Safe,' a safety-focused feature that allows users to notify select friends or family when they arrive home. Built into Snap Map's location-sharing tools, it lets users check in after events like dates or long trips, providing reassurance to close contacts. Tech companies now face stricter rules when supplying AI tools to the US government, following a directive from President Donald Trump aimed at curbing 'woke' content. The order mandates that AI developed for federal use align with traditional American values and steer clear of politically sensitive ideologies. In a widely read essay later turned into a book, Nicholas Carr argued that tools like search engines have diminished people's ability to think critically or retain knowledge. While users still need to interpret search results, Carr warned that reliance on such technology could erode deeper cognitive skills.
