Marvel's ‘Thunderbolts' — instant Oscar predictions

Yahoo05-05-2025
With Thunderbolts, Marvel is on the comeback.
The new movie from Jake Schreier (Beef) has garnered some of the best reviews for a Marvel movie since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, signaling a modest return to form for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after recent misfires like Captan America: Brave New World, The Marvels, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The expectation is that Thunderbolts, with its cast led by Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Sebastian Stan, will dominate the box office this weekend, and — at the very least — reinvigorate the MCU fanbase before The Fantastic Four: First Steps kick starts a new Marvel franchise in July. However, as with any Marvel movie, there's also the potential for Thunderbolts to factor into next year's Oscars race. While the movie is unlikely to garner recognition for its above-the-line contributors, it could find itself competitive in several craft categories — especially if awards voters buy into the Letterboxd bona fides of Thunderbolts, which Marvel touted by releasing an 'absolute cinema' teaser earlier this year.
Ahead, some instant Oscar predictions for Marvel's Thunderbolts.
Best Score
Among the notable artisans who worked on Thunderbolts are composers Son Lux, a trio of musicians fresh off an Oscar nomination for the score to Everything Everywhere All at Once. 'The score by experimental group Son Lux is a welcome shift away from orchestral bombast into more nuanced territory,' wrote David Rooney in his positive review of the movie for The Hollywood Reporter. While Best Score is traditionally highly competitive, and the argument could be made that Son Lux was carried to an Oscar nomination in 2023 because Everything Everywhere All at Once was such a phenomenon, the unique nature of the score could stand out.
'Any trepidation came from not knowing how we would fit into this world because the MCU is perhaps one of the most established things in cinema,' Rafiq Bhatia, one of the three members of Son Lux, told NME. 'But we soon discovered that Marvel and Jake wanted to do something different with this movie. We were just really excited about embarking on a journey of exploring what that different thing could be. Now that we're nearing the finish line, it's been a really rewarding experience.' If Son Lux ends up nominated, they would be only the second group of composers nominated for a Marvel movie; Ludwig Goransson, who won for Black Panther, is the only Marvel composer nominated in the category in MCU history.
Best Casting
No disrespect to Kevin Feige, but it's possible that few people have had more to do with the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe than Sarah Halley Finn. The veteran casting director has cast every Marvel movie, except for The Incredible Hulk, and has also cast multiple Marvel television shows. (She's received Emmy nominations for casting WandaVision and the Star Wars series The Mandalorian.) Thunderbolts brings together multiple Marvel franchises and also finds room for new stars, like Lewis Pullman and Geraldine Viswanathan, and could put the casting legend in contention for the inaugural Best Casting Oscar, unless Finn loses out on a potential nomination to herself. She also put together the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which includes Pedro Pascal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Julia Garner.
Best Visual Effects
In the end, the most obvious spot for Thunderbolts to compete for Academy recognition next year is Best Visual Effects. Of the 27 nominations Marvel has received in its lifespan, 14 have come in the effects category. However, one of the big selling points of Thunderbolts is that it's a smaller-scale adventure. So if any Marvel movie might continue the franchise's success in Best Visual Effects, it'll probably be The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Still, at this stage, it's safe to count Thunderbolts as one of the contenders for Best Visual Effects, even if it ultimately falls short next year.

New 'Superman' Beats 'Man of Steel' Opening Amid MAGA Backlash—With a Catch

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Official numbers for opening weekend for James Gunn's Superman movie have come in, marking a strong opening that has topped Zack Snyder's 2013 film Man of Steel as Warner Bros. looks to completely overhaul its comic book movie universe. However, fans of Snyder's film have pointed out that the opening box office numbers require some context. Newsweek reached out to Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) by email outside of normal business hours on Sunday afternoon for comment. Why It Matters A lot rides on the success of Gunn's film, which is meant to serve as the first entry in a new DC Comics movie universe. Warner Bros., as the company was known in 2013, tried to launch a new comics cinematic universe to compete with the wildly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, as opening weekend drew closer, several politically charged moments threatened to derail the movie's potential success. Gunn did not shy away from the fact that his movie would tackle politics, telling British newspaper The Times that "Superman is the story of America. An immigrant that came from other for me, it's mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and something we have lost." His comments prompted backlash from high-profile right-wing media personalities and "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) supporters, such as Fox News host Jesse Watters to jokingly say: "You know what it says on his cape? MS-13," and "Superman is fighting for truth, justice, and your preferred pronouns." Kellyanne Conway, the senior counselor to the president during the first Trump administration, also weighed in by saying: "We don't go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have somebody throw their ideology on to us." Dean Cain, an ardent supporter of President Donald Trump who played Superman in the 1990s TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, during an interview with TMZ also criticized Gunn for making Superman "woke," saying: "I think bringing Superman into it... I think that was a mistake by James Gunn to say it's an immigrant thing, and I think it's going to hurt the numbers on the movie. I was excited for the film. I am excited to see what it is...I'm rooting for it to be a success, but I don't like that last political comment." CraigWhat To Know Man of Steel, the first entry in what is now known as the Synderverse part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), had a strong box office following the lukewarm success of the 2006 film Superman Returns but had very divisive reviews from critics. Fans were more open to the new interpretation, but failure to deliver a cohesive and engaging universe with further entries, which included Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, and Justice League, prompted a major change of course, especially after Warner Bros. merged with Discovery to become Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), and new CEO David Zaslav looked to resurrect the company's greatest assets. When Gunn, the writer and director behind the wildly successful and popular Guardians of the Galaxy series for Marvel, crossed the proverbial aisle and made The Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) seized on a major opportunity. Gunn and producer Peter Safran have now charted a new course for the company's superhero movies, starting with the Gods and Monsters phase of films. Samir Hussein/WireImage So far, Superman, starring David Corenswet in the title role alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, is off to a flying start, raking in $122 million domestically and $217 million for a global cumulative gross, according to Deadline. This narrowly beat out Man of Steel, which opened to around $116 million domestically and just over $200 million globally over four days, making Superman the best-ever opening for a solo Superman film, and the biggest opening for a film featuring Superman after Batman v. Superman, which had a monster $420 million worldwide opening, including $166 million domestically. However, fans of Man of Steel have been quick to point out on social media that adjusted for inflation, Snyder's entry performed better. On the Box Office subreddit, users posted an adjusted inflation total for each Superman movie, and with that calculation, Man of Steel made just shy of $160 million domestically and $295 million globally. An average film sees around 40 percent drop from week one to week two. Superman not only had a strong opening, but very positive critical response, with Rotten Tomatoes posting an 82 percent critics rating and a 95 percent audience rating compared to Man of Steel, which posted a 57 percent critics rating and 71 percent audience rating. What People Are Saying Writer and director James Gunn told The Times: "Yes, it's about politics, but on another level it's about morality. Do you never kill no matter what — which is what Superman believes — or do you have some balance, as Lois believes? It's really about their relationship and the way different opinions on basic moral beliefs can tear two people apart." He later said: "Superman is the story of America. An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them." "I'm telling a story about a guy who is uniquely good, and that feels needed now because there is a meanness that has emerged due to cultural figures being mean online." Gunn's brother, actor Sean Gunn who plays Maxwell Lord in the film, said, per Variety: "My reaction to [the backlash] is that it is exactly what the movie is about. We support our people, you know? We love our immigrants. Yes, Superman is an immigrant, and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants and if you don't like that, you're not American. People who say no to immigrants are against the American way." What Happens Next? Superman has two weeks before Marvel releases its much-promoted Fantastic Four: First Steps, which starts a new phase of the MCU and will tie into the mysterious and course-correcting Avengers: Doomsday, which will see Robert Downey Jr. return to the franchise in a new role as Doctor Doom.

‘Superman' leaps weekend box office in single bound

It was 'up, up and away' for James Gunn's 'Superman' reboot, which finished No. 1 at the box office with a $122 million opening weekend. Warner Bros. Pictures' latest blockbuster beat early estimates of around $90 million for the weekend and surpassed last weekend's top hit 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' which grossed $40 million this weekend. Warner Bros. Discovery is the parent company of CNN. 'Superman is on the Mount Rushmore of superheroes. All eyes were on this movie,' Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. 'So, this is the gift that hopefully will keep on giving for DC Studios.' DC Studios' movies have historically not been as popular as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In 2017, DC's 'Justice League' grossed $229 million domestically, while Marvel's 'Avengers: Infinity War' grossed $678.8 domestically the following year. Marvel films haven't been as popular with audiences in recent years, which some experts attribute to 'superhero fatigue.' Dergarabedian said the performance of 'Superman' means 'we can put that to bed' because 'it's all about the individual movie.' Blockbuster hits over the last several months have lifted the summer box office 16% compared to the same time last year. The overall box office is closing in on $5 billion for all of 2025. Summer earnings currently total about $2.35 billion. Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder and owner of Box Office Theory, said it's still possible to reach a $4 billion summer, but the box office may be held back by June's underperformers. Disney's 'Elio,' for instance, opened to a mere $20 million despite positive reviews. Big performers like 'Superman' can help close the gap. 'This is kind of the nature of the box office nowadays. We see so much feast or famine-type of weekends, it just takes one movie to bust out beyond expectation,' Robbins said. 'This summer, the wealth is spread among so many movies,' he said. 'Superman' is the third movie to gross more than $100 million over a three-day opening this year. The first movie to do so was Warner Bros. Pictures' 'A Minecraft Movie' in April and Disney's 'Lilo & Stitch' in May. 'Lilo & Stitch' has been the big winner this summer, grossing over $414 million since opening on Memorial Day weekend, and is closing in on the year's biggest earner, 'A Minecraft Movie' ($423 million), which jolted the box office from a disappointing first quarter. 'Superman' isn't the last superhero movie of the summer. The next big blockbuster is expected to be Disney's 'Fantastic Four,' which opens on July 25. Robbins believes Disney's 'Freakier Friday,' the sequel to the 2003 release of Disney's 'Freaky Friday,' could end up being a breakout in August. Hollywood ultimately relies on big hits in July, so it's important for 'Fantastic Four' and 'Superman' to perform well, Robbins said.

Julia Garner responds to backlash over Silver Surfer gender-swap casting in ‘Fantastic Four'

Julia Garner knows silver looks good on her. The actress, 31, was recently asked about how she handled the backlash to her gender-swapped role as the Silver Surfer in 'Fantastic Four: First Steps.' 'Oh, well, you know. I said, 'I'm just going to still do my job,'' Garner told the BBC at the Marvel film's red carpet premiere in London on Thursday. 8 Julia Garner attends the 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' premiere in London on July also noted that she's portraying Shalla-Bal, a female iteration of the Silver Surfer, and not Norrin Radd, the male version of the character who was played Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne in 2007's 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.' 8 Julia Garner as Silver Surfer in 'Fantastic Four.' ©Walt Disney Co./Courtesy Everett Collection 'Also, it's Shalla-Bal, so it's different,' she explained. Garner went on to acknowledge the Marvel fandom's massive hype for the film, which comes out later this month. 'I was just happy that people are resonating with it, just like any other project,' she shared. 'I was confused because I was like, 'Wait, isn't the Silver Surfer a man?'' she recalled to Entertainment Weekly. 'I was just like, 'Okay, well, I'll play anything.'' 'I was a very big fan of Matt's, so there was already, in my mind, like, 'I should probably meet with Matt Shakman because he's a very smart director and I love his work.' And then he was explaining to me that it's actually Shalla-Bal and that whole thing,'' the three-time Emmy winner added. 8 Julia Garner takes pictures with fans at the 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' premiere on July 10. Jed Cullen/Dave Benett/WireImage Garner also spoke about how she prepped for the role in her first superhero movie. 'I knew who the Silver Surfer was, and I got to know the Silver Surfer more when I signed on to the project,' she shared. 'I really dived in. I read a lot of the Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer comics before starting the project, and I knew that this 'Fantastic Four' was going to be told in a very different way than even the other movies.' 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' comes out in theaters July 25.
