Lorde's Huge Week On The Rock Charts: What It Means For Her Career

Forbes14-07-2025
Every song from Lorde's Virgin lands on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, with eight new ... More debuts led by 'Shapeshifter' at No. 13. GLASTONBURY, ENGLAND - JUNE 27: Lorde performs during day three of Glastonbury festival 2025 at Worthy Farm, Pilton on June 27, 2025 in Glastonbury, England. Established by Michael Eavis in 1970, Glastonbury has grown into the UK's largest music festival, drawing over 200,000 fans to enjoy performances across more than 100 stages. In 2026, the festival will take a fallow year, a planned pause to allow the Worthy Farm site time to rest and recover. (Photo by Joseph Okpako/WireImage)
Lorde's new full-length album Virgin has turned out to be another big commercial success for the singer-songwriter. The project, her first in several years, debuts inside the top 10 on every Billboard chart it appears on and even manages to lead several tallies.
Virgin owes its impressive debut, at least partially, to strong streaming numbers, with millions of plays on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and others helping Lorde significantly increase her career total number of hits on one Billboard tally.
Every Track From Virgin Charts on Rock Tally
All 11 tracks featured on Virgin appear on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, the primary list of the most popular rock titles in the United States. Eight of them debut this week, while previously-released cuts 'What Was That' and 'Man of the Year' settle at Nos. 11 and 20, respectively.
With these new wins, Lorde has now racked up 38 total hits on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. More than one-fifth of those arrive this week alone, which means this is a very exciting and busy frame for her.
'Shapeshifter' Leads Lorde's New Entries
All of Lorde's latest entries from Virgin start inside the top 40, quickly establishing themselves as at least minor hits. Leading the charge is 'Shapeshifter,' which opens at No. 13. Seven more brand new tracks land close to one another, as 'Favorite Daughter,' 'Current Affairs,' 'David,' 'Broken Glass,' 'Clearblue,' 'If She Could See Me Now,' and 'GRWM' debut at Nos. 22, 26, 27, 28, 33, 35, and 37, respectively.
Several Virgin Tracks Chart on Multiple Lists
Some of the new cuts from Virgin appear on multiple Billboard rankings this frame. 'Shapeshifter,' 'Favorite Daughter,' and 'Current Affairs' all reach the Hot Alternative Songs chart, which only includes 25 slots.
'What Was That' remains the standout success from the set. The track is currently charting on eight different tallies simultaneously. It sits inside the top 10 on several of them and even reappears on highly competitive lists like the Billboard Global 200 and Hot 100.

Happy Valley star Sarah Lancashire to be honoured at Windsor Castle

Bafta-winning actress Sarah Lancashire will be among those honoured at Windsor Castle on Tuesday as she is made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Lancashire, 60, is to attend an investiture ceremony at the royal residence after she was made a CBE for services to drama in the New Year Honours. The actress has won plaudits for her performances in TV shows including Happy Valley and Last Tango In Halifax, following her breakthrough role as Raquel Watts in soap opera Coronation Street during the 1990s, appearing in more than 260 episodes. After leaving the cobbles, Lancashire earned praise for her TV drama work including on the BBC's critically acclaimed Clocking Off from 2000 until 2003 – a series about factory workers. She earned her first Bafta award in 2014 for her supporting role in the BBC comedy-drama series Last Tango In Halifax. In 2017 she earned the best actress Bafta for her portrayal of no-nonsense Sergeant Catherine Cawood in the Yorkshire-set thriller Happy Valley, and became an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to drama. Also among the personalities to be honoured on Tuesday are cyclists Jenny Holl, Dannielle Khan, Emma Finucane and Katy Marchant. All four are being made Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBEs) for services to cycling. Holl, 25, and her tandem partner Sophie Unwin won two gold medals in the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, while Khan, 29, piloted Lizzi Jordan to gold in the women's tandem 1km time trial. Marchant, 32, won Great Britain's first Olympic women's team sprint gold at the 2024 Paris Games, alongside teammates Finucane and Sophie Capewell. Finucane, 22, became the first British woman in 60 years to win three medals at a single Olympics as she took bronze in the individual sprint in the 2024 Paris Games. Trampoline gold medallist Bryony Page is also to be made an MBE for services to trampoline gymnastics. Paralympic swimmer Alice Tai is to be made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to swimming. Tai, 25, topped the 2024 Paralympic podium less than three years after opting to have her right leg amputated by winning gold in the women's 100m S8 backstroke. Penny Briscoe, the director of sport at the British Paralympic Association who also served as chef de mission for the fifth time in Paris, is to be made a CBE during the same ceremony for services to Paralympic sport.

Kenichiro Tsukuda On ‘Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion' And ‘Astro Boy'

'Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion' is released this September. With Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion out in a few months, I was lucky enough to catch up with the game's producer, Kenichiro Tsukuda, about what we can look forward to. Tsukuda also has a long history with mecha games, having worked on the older Armored Core games and Frame Gride at FromSoftware, also as a producer. I also interviewed Tsukuda for a UK games magazine around the time of Armored Core 3 back in 2002, so it's nice to be able to talk to him again. Considering it's been over two decades since we last talked, I wondered what he'd been up to. 'I moved to a development company called Feelplus, which later merged with Marvelous. During that time, I was involved in the development of various games, including the Fate/Extella series, Bakumatsu Rock, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, the Daemon X Machina series, and other various titles.' 'Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion' is set 300 years after the first game. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder The mecha in Titanic Scion are also closer in scale to power armor this time around, and Tsukuda was kind enough to explain why. 'As technology advanced, mecha became smaller. Although this is science fiction and a mecha title set in a fictional world, incorporating elements of reality adds depth to that world. Our goal is also to enhance the player's feeling of directly making a difference in the world as the main character. 'With the anime-style mecha that appeared in the previous game, game design can be relatively straightforward because the mecha are only used for battle. However, by scaling down the size of the mecha and making the game open world, we were forced to rethink exploration, missions, and various other elements. And while I'm proud of the unique way our game allows players to move freely between the air and the ground, this increased freedom also required us to design the world with a greater focus on three-dimensionality and spatial awareness than we otherwise would have needed. We encountered various challenges along the way, such as players accidentally accessing areas they shouldn't be able to reach, but the team persevered and successfully resolved these issues. 'As for the bigger mecha seen in the trailers, yes, they will be playable with special controls. In this game, you can summon and use Heavy Armor, which are the previous game's Arsenals, by building up your energy gauge during battle. 'Regarding the controls, we've made it possible to fly more freely in the air by having your Arsenal respond to joystick inputs. Additionally, we've revised the controls to accommodate new mechanics. The basic control scheme hasn't changed significantly, and you can fully customize the key configuration, so players should be able to find a setup that suits them. This change was inspired by a letter we received from a single player. We also enhanced accessibility options in Daemon X Machina to make the game more inclusive.' You now pilot power armor in 'Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion', although bigger mecha are also ... More available. The story for the first Daemon X Machina was certainly one of its weaker points, but it seems things will be different this time around. 'Titanic Scion is set about 300 years after the events of the first game, so similar to how the mecha have gotten smaller over time, we wanted to express how the change in time period would affect clothing and the appearance of people's faces and bodies. I worked together previously with character designer Kimihiko Fujisaka on Bakumatsu Rock. He is well-known for his fantasy work, but his style always incorporates sci-fi elements. I consulted with him about depicting a world that has changed over time, and he agreed to take on the project. While we made many changes from the previous title, I believe Fujisaka's characters have helped bring everything together. 'This time, we set out to make a more accessible story by maintaining the same depth but narrowing the scope. We hold great respect for various works of science fiction, manga, movies, and anime, and I believe our story will resonate with fans of these genres, giving them a lot to think about. Take the robot character Toby, for example, who references the robot Astro Boy. Astro Boy was created by Dr. Tenma after his son died. However, Dr. Tenma's son's name was actually Tobio, and the name Toby was chosen as a tribute to him. Finishing up, I wanted to know what Tsukuda hoped players would enjoy most about the game. 'I would like players to enjoy everything. We designed the gameplay so that players can experience everything. I also want players to jump into online play. Other players can revive you if you fall in battle while playing co-op, so there's nothing to fear.' Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion will be released on September 5 for Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, via Steam. Follow me on X, Facebook and YouTube. I also manage Mecha Damashii and am currently featured in the Giant Robots exhibition currently touring Japan.

‘Ted Lasso' is going stateside for Season 4, with production now underway

Get ready to believe once more. Apple TV+ announced that Season 4 of the award-winning, feel-good comedy series 'Ted Lasso' has begun production, sharing a first-look photo featuring cast members Jason Sudeikis, Juno Temple, Hannah Waddingham and Jeremy Swift. The release detailed that principal photography began Monday in Kansas City, Sudeikis's hometown, with additional filming set to take place in London. Apple boss Tim Cook also shared the image, with a caption on X , 'From biscuits to BBQ.' The first three seasons of the show took place in London, England, where Lasso (Sudeikis), a transplanted American football coach, found himself guiding the wayward soccer league Richmond AFC to new heights. Brett Goldstein and Brendan Hunt – previously announced as returning executive producers – are also returning as their characters, Roy Kent and Beard, respectively. Goldstein has won two acting Emmy for the series. News of the show's continuation first broke in March, and Sudeikis shared around the same time that the new season will focus on Lasso leading a women's sports team. The sitcom first premiered amid the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, with the finale of Season 3 airing in May 2023. 'Ted Lasso' scored 61 Emmy nominations and 13 wins in its initial run. No information on a premiere date for Season 4 has yet been revealed.
