Four of five trapped workers at Codelco's El Teniente mine found dead

SANTIAGO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Four of five trapped workers at Codelco's El Teniente copper mine have been found dead, the company said on Sunday, as rescue teams work to clear underground passages that collapsed in a strong tremor last week. The latest fatality brings the total death toll from the accident to five, including one person who died at the time of the incident on Thursday evening. Codelco discovered the first trapped worker on Saturday and another two early Sunday. A fourth worker was discovered later on Sunday morning, said El Teniente general manager Andes Music. "We worked overnight with the utmost care, looking meter by meter," he told a press conference. 'I also don't want to create false hopes. Let's hope our rescue workers continue to make progress." As of early Sunday, rescue teams had cleared 24 meters of blocked passages, out of 90 meters that Codelco officials previously said could be necessary to reach the trapped workers, in the new Andesita section of the mine. The collapse occurred on Thursday around 5:30 p.m. local time, caused by one of the largest tremors ever recorded at El Teniente with the impact of a 4.2 magnitude quake. Codelco is investigating whether the cause was mining activity or natural tectonic shifts in the earthquake-prone country.

Thomas Partey 'set to join LaLiga side' as free agent - despite ex-Arsenal star facing rape charges

Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey will reportedly return to LaLiga after departing the north London club as a free agent at the end of last season. Last month, Partey, 32, was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He is accused of attacking three women between 2021 and 2022. His charges, which followed a three-year investigation by Scotland Yard, arrived just five days after he left Arsenal on June 30. Partey denies the allegations and will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Tuesday, August 5. Amid these legal proceedings, Partey has reportedly undergone a medical at Villarreal, and is set to join the Spanish club on a two-year deal, according to The Athletic. After finishing fifth in La Liga last term, Villarreal will play in the Champions League in 2025-26, which is said to have been a motivating factor behind Partey's decision to join. Partey spent five seasons at the Emirates, having playing in the Spanish top-flight for Atletico Madrid before joining the Gunners. He made 167 appearances under Mikel Arteta. Partey was accused of two counts of rape related to one woman and three counts of rape related to a second woman. The one count of sexual assault relates to a third woman. None of the alleged victims can be named. The Crown Prosecution Service has said the charges came after it 'carefully reviewed a comprehensive file of evidence'. Partey 'denies all the charges against him' and 'welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name', his lawyer said in early July. The Metropolitan Police said the investigation into Partey began in February 2022 after officers first received a report of rape. He was first arrested in July 2022, though he was not named at the time and continued to play for Arsenal while investigations were ongoing. He played more than 50 games for Arsenal while on bail, it has emerged. In a statement, his lawyer Jenny Wiltshire, of Hickman and Rose, said: 'Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. 'He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. 'Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further.' Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, whose team is leading the investigation, said: 'Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.

Spanish police recover bodies of father, son after plane crash

MADRID, Aug 3 (Reuters) - The bodies of a pilot and his son were recovered after their biplane plunged into the sea off the Spanish island of Mallorca, police said on Sunday. The two-seater Team Rocket F-4 Raider plane crashed into the sea in the Puerto Soller area on Saturday night. The plane appeared to be performing stunts before the crash, Spanish media reported. Divers searching for the pilot and his 13-year-old son located their bodies in the sea after a search on Sunday. "At approximately 1 p.m. (1100 GMT) specialist divers from the Civil Guard recovered the lifeless bodies of the pilot and his son who accompanied him in a sea which reaches a depth of 30 metres and they have been transferred to the Puerto of Soller," the Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement. The plane crashed around 8.20pm and an initial search by emergency teams was launched. When this failed to locate the pilot and his son, it was resumed at first light on Sunday. An investigation into the circumstances of the crash will be launched by police.
