The family of the Kargil War veteran was harassed over accusations of being illegal immigrants.
In a shocking incident, the family of a Kargil War veteran in Pune has alleged harassment and intimidation by a mob of unidentified men. Reportedly, the family was harassed over accusations of being illegal immigrants. The mob also demanded proof of Indian citizenship from them.
Additionally, the family of the war veteran also raised serious concerns over the role of local police in the incident, which took place late on July 26 at their residence in Pune's Chandan Nagar area.
According to India Today, the family informed that at around 11.30 pm in the night, a group of 30 to 40 unidentified men stormed their residence and demanded citizenship documents from them.
It was also informed that despite the family's military background — with members having served in the 1965, 1971, and 1999 wars — the male members of the family were allegedly detained at the police station for hours during the night.
'We were told that if we didn't show documents, we would be declared illegal immigrants," a family member was quoted as saying by India Today.
Expressing displeasure over the incident, Hakimuddin Shaikh, a retired Naik Havildar of the Indian Army's 269 Engineer Regiment who fought in the 1999 Kargil War, said, 'I served the country with pride for 16 years. My family is entirely Indian."
'Why are we being asked to prove our citizenship?" he added. Hakimuddin currently resides in his hometown, while his extended family has lived in Pune since 1960.
Meanwhile, the family was informed that the incident was initiated by a mob, not the police. While a police van was nearby, one officer tried to intervene, but did not help.
Following the incident, the family lodged a complaint with the Chandan Nagar police. Instead of receiving protection, they claimed, police took all adult men in the household to the station around midnight and kept them there until 3 am.

Bangla youth tries to break airport glass wall, detained

Kolkata: A 25-year-old Bangladeshi national was detained at Kolkata airport on Friday after he tried to exit the airport's international transit area without an Indian visa by attempting to break open a glass wall. The man was in transit from Singapore to Dhaka with a layover in Kolkata. As per standard procedure, flyers without Indian visas are confined to airport's international transit zone — a secured glass-enclosed space designed to prevent unauthorized entry into Indian territory. Officials said the man tried to break through the glass wall enclosing the transit area to exit the terminal building. CISF personnel intercepted him before he could get out. He was handed over to cops for further questioning. tnn
