UP govt to plant more than 125 million saplings under MGNREGA scheme
According to the state government, the aim is not only to enhance greenery but also to generate large-scale rural employment.
This year's plantation drive will be carried out under the theme 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0', blending ecological responsibility with emotional and cultural sentiment by encouraging people to dedicate a tree to their mothers, it said.
The highest 4.2 million saplings would be planted in Lakhimpur Kheri, followed by Sonbhadra and Hardoi.
A total of 189,000 plantation sites have been identified across the state, with plant species selected based on local climatic and geographical conditions. The initiative ensures that plantation efforts are sustainable and tailored to each location.
In a special move to promote nutrition and health, each beneficiary of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural) will receive two drumstick (Moringa) saplings, known for their medicinal and nutritional value. This effort aims to enhance nutritional security for rural families, the official statement said.
The Department of Rural Development has been given the lead in implementing the campaign.
The success of the campaign will not be measured by plantation numbers alone, but by the survival and growth of the saplings. For this, arrangements for regular watering, tree guards, maintenance, and monitoring will be made under MGNREGA, the statement said.

The initiative to revive vanishing small rivers in Uttar Pradesh is gaining momentum, with a restoration campaign now underway for the Loni River, which passes through 14 village panchayats in Shankargarh, Prayagraj district. Spanning around 32.5 kilometers, the river flows through 14 villages, informed chief development officer (CDO) of Prayagraj, Harshika Singh. The restoration work has officially commenced in the village panchayat of Gadha Katra in Shankargarh, marking a significant move toward ecological renewal and water conservation in the region, CDO Harshika Singh informed. Reviving rivers demands inclusive and collective efforts. Recognising this, the administration has called upon voluntary organisations, village head groups, public representatives, and women's self-help groups to actively participate and support the initiative. According to the CDO, excavation work will be undertaken under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), alongside plantation drives and the construction of embankments. She added that the district coordinator for MGNREGA has been directed to ensure the complete excavation of the river, removal of encroachments from both banks, and implementation of tree plantation along the river. During the monsoon season, small streams feed into the Loni, but numerous blockages along its course obstruct the natural flow. Officials stated that efforts will now be made to clear these obstructions and guide the water along its intended path. Earlier this year, two other small rivers in Prayagraj — the Lapari and Karnawati— were successfully revived. Once on the brink of disappearing, both rivers are now flowing freely and vibrantly once again. The Lapari, which originates from Koraon in Prayagraj, flows through more than 12 village panchayats over a stretch of approximately 18 kilometers before merging with the Belan river. Similarly, the Karnawati River—stretching about 19 kilometers and passing through over 15 village panchayats in the Manda region—was on the verge of extinction. The administration stepped in to revive both rivers. With a budget of ₹102.44 lakh under MGNREGA, the initiative generated 44,539 person-days of employment. Over 40,000 trees were planted on both sides of the river. After two years of hard work, the river's entire course has got filled with water.

Plantation drive to focus on teak, sheesham & fruit-bearing trees
Lucknow: The massive drive to plant 37 crore saplings during Van Mahotsav on Wednesday will focus on teak, sheesham, moringa and fruit-bearing plants with the objective to help the poor meet their nutritional requirements and boost income. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will launch the campaign, which will be carried out from 6am to 6pm, by planting saplings in Ayodhya and Azamgarh. Apart from increasing the state's green cover, the objective of the campaign is to encourage people to plant trees and nurture them. Out of 37 crore saplings to be planted on the day, 18.6 crore will be of teak and sheesham, 10.8 crore will be of fruit-bearing varieties, and 5.8 crore will be medicinal saplings like drumstick and neem. The govt will give two moringa saplings each to the families identified as beneficiaries under the zero-poverty programme, under the 'Sahjan Bhandara' programme. "The agencies which distribute saplings to these families will ensure that plantation is done near households so that moringa trees can meet the nutritional requirements of these families," a forest department official said.
