Search continues for Rowan County inmate who escaped custody Tuesday

Yahoo08-05-2025
MOREHEAD, Ky. (FOX 56) — A search continued in Rowan County on Wednesday after an inmate escaped police custody early Tuesday morning.
The search began around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday after 35-year-old Anthony Martinez escaped police custody while at the University of Kentucky St. Claire Hospital.
This is not the first time the Indiana man has fled police. WDRB, the Louisville FOX affiliate, reported he escaped from custody in 2020.
Martinez was being held at the Rowan County Detention Center and was set to spend 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of armed robbery in 2022. He has been connected to at least four bank robberies.

'That's all we really found, a couple of articles of clothing that could be his, and they were found not too far off of where they lost sight of him,' said Morehead Chief of Police Derrick Blevins.
The police said Martinez was outside the hospital with detention center guards when he took off running, heading eastbound.
Police continued to look for Martinez, and on Wednesday, the Eastern Kentucky K-9 unit stepped in to help.
'We deployed drones to try to look for him, we used some dogs to try to locate him, and we have detectives working with the jail to try and run down any leads there that we can,' Blevins said.
Search teams walked miles led by K-9, starting at the hospital, going through nearby neighborhoods, and even searching along Highway 60.
With Morehead State University and Rowan County Schools nearby, Blevins said they worked to quickly notify both.

'On foot in areas, looking in any abandoned structures, areas of agitation where somebody might be able to hide, so that's what we've been focusing on today,' Blevins said.
Police said help from the public is important and encouraged anyone who believes they have seen Martinez, whether that be through home security footage or in person, to contact 911.
Anthony Martinez is 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs around 210 pounds. He no longer has facial hair.
FOX 56 asked authorities why Martinez was away from the jail and at the hospital, and has not gotten an answer.
'While the individual was not a patient at the time of the incident, UK St. Claire remains committed to supporting the police as they investigate,' UK St. Claire spokesperson Kristi Willett told FOX 56.
Kentucky State Police and the Rowan County Sheriff's Office are also helping in the search.

Bills rookie Maxwell Hairston faces sexual assault accusation, lawsuit before first NFL training camp: report

Maxwell Hairston's NFL dreams became a reality in April when the Buffalo Bills selected him out of Kentucky in the first round of the draft. But as Hairston prepares for his first NFL training camp, the Bills rookie defensive back faces serious legal concerns. Hairston is named in a lawsuit that accuses the 21-year-old of sexual misconduct when he was a student-athlete in 2021. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in federal court in Kentucky, according to The Associated Press. ESPN reported the accuser is an Ohio woman who also attended the University of Kentucky and lived in the same dorm as Hairston in 2021. Fox News Digital was not immediately able to reach Hairston's representatives for comment. In the lawsuit, the woman alleges Hairston entered her dorm room without being invited. The woman then expressed "her non-interest in engaging in sexual intercourse with him several times," according to the lawsuit. Hairston then allegedly "forcibly removed" her clothing and sexually assaulted her. The Bills had no comment and referred to statements made by general manager Brandon Beane in April during the draft. Beane said at the time the team had "fully investigated" a sexual assault allegation from 2021 involving Hairston, who he called "an impeccable kid." "So, that's unfortunate when things like that are attached to someone's name. And, in this case, doesn't seem to be anything there," Beane said. Hairston spent three seasons playing at Kentucky. He'll have a chance to win a starting job at cornerback this season. The Bills have been off since completing their mandatory practices in mid-June and return later this month for the start of training camp. IDF soldier killed, eight wounded in fighting across northern Gaza

Sgt. Michalovich was killed, and eight were wounded in a series of incidents in the Shujaiya neighborhood in eastern Gaza City that began at around 9:00 a.m., according to Army Radio. The IDF announced the death of Sergeant (Sgt.) Yaniv Michalovitch in Gaza City on Wednesday. Michalovitch, 19, from Rehovot, served in the 98th Division, in the Armored Corps 82nd Battalion, in the 'Sa'ar Magolan' 7th Brigade. Sgt. Michalovich was killed, and eight were wounded in a series of incidents in the Shujaiya neighborhood in eastern Gaza City that began at around 9:00 a.m., according to Army Radio. In the first incident, terrorists launched two RPG rockets at a building in which an Egoz unit was stationed. As a result of the strike, one soldier was moderately wounded and another was lightly wounded. Approximately 20 minutes later, another anti-tank missile was fired at the tank carrying the 7th Brigade. The tank was operating with the goal of locating the terrorists from the first incident. As a result of the missile strike on the tank, Sgt. Michalovitch was killed, and the other soldiers in the tank were wounded - two seriously and one moderately. Immediately following the two incidents, the IAF carried out several airstrikes to facilitate the evacuation of the wounded to a hospital and to attempt to kill the terrorists. The IDF is investigating whether the same terrorist cell that fired the two anti-tank missiles was struck. After the first two incidents, a Hamas sniper fired from a mosque at the Egoz troops, and one soldier was seriously wounded. Following this, a D-9 engineering vehicle hit an explosive device, wounding two soldiers, one moderately and one lightly. The wounded soldiers were all evacuated to a hospital to receive medical treatment, and their families have been notified. The IDF announced the death of Sgt. Yisrael Natan Rosenfeld, who served in the IDF's 601st Combat Engineering Battalion under the 401st Brigade, on Sunday. He was killed after being hit by an anti-tank missile in Jabalya. The incident occurred while Rosenfeld and his battalion were investigating a report of there being an explosive device in a building. Last Wednesday, the military announced the death of seven soldiers from the IDF's Combat Engineering Corps in an incident where a Hamas terrorist attached an improvised explosive device to a Puma-style troop transport vehicle in Khan Yunis. Michalovitch marks the ninth soldier killed in Gaza within the past week. This is a developing story.

Bills first-round pick Maxwell Hairston accused of sexual assault in shocking lawsuit

Bills 2025 first-round draft pick Maxwell Hairston is being sued for alleged sexual assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress, according to reports. The 21-year-old cornerback was named as a defendant in a civil lawsuit filed Tuesday after a woman, who identified herself as Rebecca Hendryx, per ESPN, alleges she was sexually assaulted by Hairston in 2021 when he was at the University of Kentucky. The woman claims she and Hairston first met in early 2021 outside of the Kentucky residence hall that they both lived in. 4 Maxwell Hairston speaking to media after his NFL Draft selection. AP Then, on the night of March 24, Hairston is alleged to have come uninvited to the plaintiff's dorm room. 'Plaintiff inquired about the purpose of Defendant's visit, to which Defendant responded that he wanted to hang out with Plaintiff,' the lawsuit reads, per USA Today. 'Plaintiff declined and further expressed that she was tired and going to bed before turning around and walking away from the door.' Hairston then allegedly entered anyway, forcibly removed Hendryx's pajama shorts and sexually assaulted her, ignoring her repeated refusals to engage in sexual contact. The woman reported the alleged incident 'within hours' to law enforcement and received a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner exam at the hospital after speaking to police, according to ESPN. Hendryx, who has since transferred out of the University of Kentucky, is reportedly seeking a jury trial and compensatory damages on all counts. 4 Maxwell Hairston during a Bills practice in May. AP 'Our client showed remarkable strength in coming forward, and we are proud to stand with her in pursuit of accountability and justice,' one of the woman's attorneys, Peter Flowers, said, per USA Today. 'No one — regardless of their status or athletic success — is above the law.' Buffalo selected Hairston with the 30th pick in April's draft after he spent three seasons with the Wildcats, during which he played 32 games, grabbed six interceptions and made 89 total tackles. 4 Hairston during his time at Kentucky. 'We did a lot of research. I think all teams were aware of the Title IX thing. That was fully investigated by the school,' Beane said. 'He even volunteered to do a polygraph and had notes. It was one of those where there was zero information saying that this actually happened, to what the accusation was. You can't take someone's account and think that's the truth. But yes, we fully investigated that.' 4 Maxwell Hairston was all smiles after his draft selection. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Beane added: 'Every person you talk to at Kentucky, teammates, staff there, plus what we've done, I would say this is a heck of a young man, every person you ask. That's unfortunate when things like that are attached to someone's name; in this case, it doesn't seem to be anything there.'
